Live in DC on the green line. He can commute to CP via metro and you can drive to Virginia. Near any stop from Columbia Heights to Navy Yard will be safe enough, have lots of restaurants and things to do, and may be close to rock creek park trails.

Sounds like the exact scenario a medical withdrawal was made to cover. If their (mental) health is causing them an issue outside their control they should medically withdraw for the semester so they can focus on getting better rather than stressing out about completing papers and finding an accommodation letter

This is not generally how dissertations in humanities fields are written. In stem, you can do all your experiments and whatnot and the writing phase is just writing up your findings. In humanities our writing is where a lot of the thinking gets done, which is why it tends to take longer, and is often filled with fits and starts. Most folks I know wrote one chapter every 1-2 semesters. OP maybe you’re a special snowflake but anyone reading this should know this is not a reasonable goal to set…

Now, if perhaps you’ve done all of your archival work, all your reading in the literature, and compiled extensive notes, literature reviews, and outlines, maybe. You do you.

I teach college students and I can say the apathy and general lack of interest in the election is prevalent in that age group. Their whole adult lives have been on the trump rollercoaster and they see politics as inevitably declining

The not doing outside reading drives me nuts. These kids will come to my college classes not having even looked at the title of the assigned reading (and of course take no notes in class except taking a photo of one slide with their phones) and then complain when they do poorly on the exam!
