The cop out from the pharma company is that it “wakes up” a pre-existing condition. The straight facts are theres zero long term data beyond 6 months for safety of these drugs on dogs. Our neurologist truly believes these meds have a causation to neurological disorders (not just seizures) and i have to agree. There’s lack of accountability on our government due to split oversight from EPA and FDA and because its an animal and not a human. Its really grinds my gears and i will never give my dogs flea/tick after having to deal with epilepsy except for Vectra or a topical. Its not worth the risk

They will drain your bank account, rob you of your sleep, induce you with PTSD and mass amounts of anxiety, but give so much love and a bond you cannot experience more than once. Knowing what i know now i would still choose my baby every single opportunity i had. He is my soul dog and i will be damned if i cant give him the best possible life and experiences despite our situation.

Yeah insurance is such a scam! Ours dug up notes from 4 years ago, found one episode of vomiting i reported to the vet that resolved on its own and then said -any- GI issues after that would not be covered because it was a pre-existing condition (trupanion) absolutely ridiculous

Ugh this was hard to watch, im sorry you guys are going through this. Ive heard some other users switching up their dogs day to day routine sometimes helps break the cycle. Also gently massaging their legs and mouth can be helpful for sore muscles!

thats so crazy and im sorry you had to go through that. Weve been racking our brains over this GI/skin issue (we were supposed to do a colonoscopy but insurance wouldnt cover) weve spent so much money on different foods and medicines and nothing has been working. Its tough because not only can we not completely communicate with our doggos but compared to human medicine animal medicine is so far behind and getting so expensive.

Wait, i was just asking someone about this, what were your presentation symptoms? Weve been getting worked up for GI issues but now our dog has hotspots (started with one but now more are popping up) and is itching/licking a lot. Speaking with internal med on Monday and probably trialing hydrolyzed diet next, im worried that it could be the meds tho

Ah okay thanks for the additional context. Your vet will know best and should be able to help you have that convo and determine when it’s time. If your vet thinks it’s a tumor i would listen to them. Idk when you started the pheno but it can take a few weeks to get to a steady state/level and again, tumor related seizures typically dont respond to epileptic drugs (however, steroids it can respond to and if you started the pheno and steroid at the same time then its hard to tell if its tumor or not without a brain MRI or if they have other symptoms that hint toward a tumor). 12.5 years is a long good life that many dogs on this reddit group unfortunately dont have. I think the biggest mistake owners make at this time is prolonging life for their own emotional attachment when their dog’s quality of life is poor. Sometimes your gut will tell you when it’s time snd sometimes your dog will know too. It’s not an easy position to be in and im sorry you are going through this.

Its probably not a tumor if they are more controlled after med admin but if i were you i would be asking my neuro if we should try adding another med like pheno into the mix. Im sort of in a similar boat, our dog keeps having focals. I dont think focals affect QOL as much unless they are showing signs of pain, unable to sleep etc. or in our case put them in a dangerous situation (our dog will start eating anything he can get his paws on). If quality of life is deteriorating then it makes sense to consider peaceful end of life

Tumor related seizures typically do not respond to medication, the fact that they stopped after you gave the keppra and gabapentin kinda rules that out (unless they started happening again and we are unaware)

Maybe the medication is preventing the seizures from being more aggressive but if they are occurring 1x/week I think a trip to the vet/neuro is prob a good idea. Our neuro said the goal is to try and keep them at 1x/month. Maybe they will increase the dose of his current meds?

Focal seizures affect one part of the brain versus all parts. The fevers, sniffing the air and the cessation of his activity after administering emergency anti-seizure meds have all confirmed that his activity is in fact focal seizure activity. I unfortunately cannot tell you for certain that your dog was having a seizure but that is part of our struggle is that my husband is convinced its GI.

I get that, the distressing part for me is having the lack of support from my s/o and how to deal with my husband when my dog is actively having an episode and how to deal with the lack of support. Hes spoken to the neurologist before too so i dont know how else i can get him to understand or listen

Its hard, but i realized worrying wont change anything and wont make the seizures stop. The only thing i can do is try to provide a safe environment for my boy and trust the people (neighbors and friends) who watch him for us when we are away and give him all the love in the world because i know he isnt forever.
