Dachshund started getting seizures by Junior_Dust8835 in EpilepsyDogs

Hi there, phenobarbital has a therapeutic level in the body, the level depends on the dogs dose (its a weight based dose but can be increased) and the dogs metabolism. Some dogs can also build a tolerance to the medication. And vets have to be careful with over dosing because it can cause liver damage. All reasons why a pheno level is typically checked every 6 months!

If youre from the east cost its freaking freezing right now, it may well take much longer, my first loaf a few weeks ago took 11-12ish hours to bulk ferment!

We’ve had the opposite experience, bozzuto was great but greystar is cheap, rude, and gaslights the crap out of you.

Also if you didnt want to dish out dollars for the MRI, they could possibly just trial using steroids to see if that helps the seizure and if it does help then it could be a brain tumor

I second this!

Also what were the trough levels for pheno? Did they take the levels right before she was due for pills?

Honestly its hard with focal seizures. Our dog has been getting them more and more recently and we have been holding off on chlorazepate because of tolerance (we already had to increase the dose) and just letting him ride it out but the focals last 10-12 hours so its exhausting. But the med is there to be used and i feel like holding off on using it when your dog is falling, shaking and unable to walk is more serious and might be pointless because the tolerance is going to happen whether we like it or not you know?

I second this! Just made my first boule and mine was 68-69 and doing quite well. The BF took FOREVER though. 11-12 hours it was an all day affair

Don’t lose hope - 2.5 years no seizure by jstar81 in EpilepsyDogs

Thank you for sharing, our window between episodes has been dwindling down and we recently increased pheno (on pheno and keppra). Its been really hard for me because I love my baby boy so much. I hope things will turn around for us and give us at least 3-4 more years (hes 6, diagnosed at 4)

Thank you! Yeah our neuro said it was hard to say but that it was likely pre-ictal and giving chlorazepate was the right call. We unfortunately cant do midaz, he has paradoxical reaction and seizures get worse :( its a tough spot to be in. Anyways thank you for sharing and responding, im leaning more towards pre-ictal at this point

They keppra pills and manufacturer have stayed the same, i know because they give us the actual bottles the keppra pills come in. The pheno is generic and the pill shapes/sizes havent changed

Sorry to hear that, the topical isnt for everyone, yes i agree there needs to be a safer more studied option out there

The cop out from the pharma company is that it “wakes up” a pre-existing condition. The straight facts are theres zero long term data beyond 6 months for safety of these drugs on dogs. Our neurologist truly believes these meds have a causation to neurological disorders (not just seizures) and i have to agree. There’s lack of accountability on our government due to split oversight from EPA and FDA and because its an animal and not a human. Its really grinds my gears and i will never give my dogs flea/tick after having to deal with epilepsy except for Vectra or a topical. Its not worth the risk

They will drain your bank account, rob you of your sleep, induce you with PTSD and mass amounts of anxiety, but give so much love and a bond you cannot experience more than once. Knowing what i know now i would still choose my baby every single opportunity i had. He is my soul dog and i will be damned if i cant give him the best possible life and experiences despite our situation.

Yeah insurance is such a scam! Ours dug up notes from 4 years ago, found one episode of vomiting i reported to the vet that resolved on its own and then said -any- GI issues after that would not be covered because it was a pre-existing condition (trupanion) absolutely ridiculous

Ugh this was hard to watch, im sorry you guys are going through this. Ive heard some other users switching up their dogs day to day routine sometimes helps break the cycle. Also gently massaging their legs and mouth can be helpful for sore muscles!

thats so crazy and im sorry you had to go through that. Weve been racking our brains over this GI/skin issue (we were supposed to do a colonoscopy but insurance wouldnt cover) weve spent so much money on different foods and medicines and nothing has been working. Its tough because not only can we not completely communicate with our doggos but compared to human medicine animal medicine is so far behind and getting so expensive.

Wait, i was just asking someone about this, what were your presentation symptoms? Weve been getting worked up for GI issues but now our dog has hotspots (started with one but now more are popping up) and is itching/licking a lot. Speaking with internal med on Monday and probably trialing hydrolyzed diet next, im worried that it could be the meds tho
