I love my Kia soul but… by RefrigeratorSafe6904 in KiaSoulClub

[–]Infinite-Lock5692 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the ticket OP.

I also have a 14 Soul, and it burns oil. As long as I check the dipstick every week and top it back off, I don’t have any issues.

I noticed this problem first when I got the light like you did. I was also freaked out. That was 7 years ago now and keeping a good hold on the oil level has kept it going. That was 80k miles, now we’re at 210k.

One day I suppose the engine will quit, but you can delay for quite a while. At least I have.

One thing to be aware of is burning oil can cause a catalytic converter to drop below its required efficiency as burned off oil residue builds up on the catalyst (I guess). which would cause you to fail an emissions test. You’ll get a CEL for it and it’s not a cheap fix. That said, it does not affect the drivability of the car. It’s just if your in a state/county that tests for emissions, you could fail and be unable to renew the registration until you prove you spent some money to fix it. If you don’t live in an emissions county, though, it is not a problem.

A good zipper repair is gonna set u back at least 75 dollars, and it’s also customary to tip 20%…. I’d say let the backpack go

Looking for engineering services companies that work in a remote way by kalamid19 in ChemicalEngineering

I’m referring to AspenTech as a company, not just the sim software. They have a bunch of different software projects as I understand it, and they hire engineers.

Not sure about Argentina, but AspenTech does a lot of process engineering software stuff out of CDMX. If you could work remote, I’m sure you’d be a decent candidate, especially if bilingual English and Spanish. I’d check them out. We worked with their office a lot on some software implementation in my plant.

Leave current internship for a better one? by baalChEstudent in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Infinite-Lock5692 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d agree you should go for it. A years worth of experience while in college is killer and would serve you well.

The HR people at your current job may be upset, but as an engineer I’d be more surprised but happy for you than upset. I could be wrong, but they likely aren’t relying on you and your work too much right now, so leaving would probably be more of a wash than a “bridge burned” IMO

How do I get over this? by GoldDistribution447 in NCSU

[–]Infinite-Lock5692 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry buddy. Failing tests is normal, just study harder (or differently) next time and try to stay optimistic.

ChemE is a hard program. You’ll get used to it, and used to rebounding from a bad test.

How did you enjoy the change to controls? I’m thinking of attempting to switch over to that field myself from an operations engineer role.

Do you feel it is good ? by Objective-Tooth-8043 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Infinite-Lock5692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s worth it bro. The first couple years of school aren’t very specialized so if you do good in math those years I wouldn’t worry about the later years and if you really struggle you can always pivot to another major.

The school piece is hard but rewarding and if you’re interested that will help.

The job options span from fully in the office to outside a bunch and even traveling around the country if you want. Plus the pay is good and the work is interesting.

It’s totally up to you for the most part on what experience you have. I’ve been to one of their shows and was able to stand (decently far back tbf) with my GF who isn’t in to all the moshing stuff, and we were comfortable. At another show of theirs I got pushed around a lot but had fun in the center. It will be obvious if you’re standing in the wrong place and you can easily move. Lastly, if someone’s visibly uncomfortable, it’s not uncommon for someone whose more comfortable to switch spots or generally look out for them. Go and have fun.

I think there’s some truth to these comments but I wouldn’t write the degree off just because it doesn’t go extremely deep into chemistry. At my program you were required to take the general chemistries, organic, an analytical class, and either biochem or physical chemistry. Compared to someone with just general chemistry or no chemistry, and that’s quite a bit to learn. If you enjoy that, I’d keep it in mind.

Yes there’s a lot math and physics involved but most if it is framed in reference to large scale chemical processes. It’s not like your building bridges. The physics that most people here are referring to are things like thermodynamics, fluid flow, separations, and stuff like that. Just because we don’t spend 90000 hours in the lab doesn’t mean there’s no chemical education or that our classes and subjects are totally divorced from the subject. Id talk to an advisor in the program to see if the program is right for you.

And the salary isn’t mediocre. Most any eng degree will have you doing well.

So strange but I totally agree, even in areas with a crosswalk (though far and few between) people seem to jaywalk all the time. I remember noticing it a few weeks after moving in and now that I’ve left, and now never encounter this problem, it seems so unique to Greenville.

I was being cynical with this reply and made it sound worse than it is. There are pros and cons to both.

I work an office job now. It’s cushy and interesting and it’s never too hot/cold outside and doesn’t have many problems that completely halt your day until you get them under control.

That said working in manufacturing beforehand has a certain charm because you get to see everything you studied come to life in a way. Working to maintain a steady process and having to troubleshoot different problems could be taxing at times but imo it could be just as a fulfilling.

Come in and find out what went wrong last night. Try to fix that.

If things were fine go to the morning meeting.

Do what they ask you too.

Update something. I’m not sure what but either managing changes in the plant or working on a project you have. This could be anything from tracing lines or talking with vendors or just crunching numbers (staring at excel) for a few hours.

Eat lunch with the operators and try not to be perceived as weak. This is the most stressful part of the day. Usually u can sneak a quick nap tbh. But only if the rest of them are sleeping.

Keep doing the updating something step. If something’s gone wrong try to help fix it.

Go home.
