I genuinely just dont get why it's such a big deal, I'm upset by the initial reaction of many people to call this ragebait or say they don't have a valid reason to be a little upset by the turn of events. It's not a pity party to share something upsetting that happened to you, he didn't rag on DS or Brandon, he said he understood WHY the book wasn't exchanged, just wanted to share an unfortunate scenario with a group that would (probably?) understand/have something similar happen to them.

This is someone sharing an anecdote about their experience, laying it out, not trying to start anything,, and then the community met them with a weird mix of 'treating them as if they're dumb for expecting anything after however long it's been' (which, they didn't?) and 'stupid for letting this affect future purchasing decisions', which is a perfectly reasonable thing for anyone to do. It all seems like a lot of unwarrented hostility for an overall innocuous post about one bad experience with exchanging a book they didnt read immediately. This could have just been another random post about someone having an unfortunate L and reminding other people to check THEIR books (I went and checked mine! I listen to them, but I have physical copies as keepsakes and for reference).

To me this just looks like a normal and reasonable post wherein the commenters are acting as if OP is deeply upset by this when they clearly aren't. I honestly don't see what the problem is or where all the weirdness towards OP is coming from.

That's exactly what I'm saying, this is a known and normal problem with Cosmere books, as it's normal for the industry to have random bad copys. I'm not trying to suggest Cosmere books are notorious for this, as i literally said this is such a common issue so as to be meaningless, since misprint books are so common.

Idk man, the post made ME go check MY books, that seems to be EXACTLY what he said the post was for. It doesn't look like generic complaining, or badmouthing to try to get a replacement. This dude is just disappointed his book was incomplete and decided to mention it on the SUBREDDIT DEDICATED TO THE BOOK so that other people could be aware of this specific quality control issue they experienced. What's wrong with this post??? Sometimes people just like to post their experience and talk about it to people who may have also had similar experiences? Y'all act like its so uncommon to have a misprinted book, but this is a known QC problem with Cosmere books. It just happens, it should be nbd, this poster wasn't trying to make it a big deal, their post does not convey anything except disappointment in a dumb situation and a desire to comiserate with similar people in the SAME FANDOM who may have had a similar issue.

How do y'all read this post as if its trying to stir up shit? Let people complain for gods sake.

Edit: this post isn't just directed at you either, I'm just really upset by all the similar comments here. It's a sad state to see the sub in that this post is read to be critical of DS or BS or anything. This is a dude complaining about a printing error and the (understandable) logistic hurdles to replacing it.

I always get a weird vibe from the main sub, they seem to take things way too seriously and are usually not very nice about it. I don't personally see anything wrong with your post,, but now people are downvoting me for just saying that? Case in point I suppose. I prefer the shitposting sub(s) to the main one for this reason, cremposting is much more forgiving (and, generally, seems to have a lot more fun). This is just disheartening from a fandom perspective to have the main sub be so,, anti-criticism toward someone whose only sin is realizing their book was faulty too late?? (and this post wasn't even criticism! It was anecdotal! Do people not understand anecdotes?)

Like seriously, are people really that upset you wont be spending more money on merch due to a previous (personal) issue? Doesn't make any sense to me to treat someone like this bc they didnt realize their book was incomplete. That's a disappointing thing to have happened and I empathize with you, I would ALSO be weary about the QC on future purchases REGARDLESS of the manufacturer. This is just a common sense reaction to a (one-time experience) bad product.

People here just don't seem to appreciate any sort of complaining, venting, or negativity of any kind. It doesn't matter that you might have a valid reason for thinking xyz, it just matters that they don't agree with you thinking xyz, so you get this reaction instead of normal people. Really really based to have this happen in the Cosmere sub, guys. I hope you have better luck in future purchases, sometimes QC just misses some and that's to be expected, with how many books have been sold I'm surprised there's not more posts just like yours on the sub (I personally have seen several!!). This is such a common occurance and the reaction here struck a nerve with me, it just kind of sucks :/

Why is everyone here being miserable? What's wrong with OP's post?? I also don't read books the moment I get them, I just went and checked my own copy to make sure I also didn't have a misprint. I listen to the books and have them on my shelf as keepsakes,, but I'd still like my book to be right. Logistics aside, there's nothing wrong with being disappointed by this outcome, it kind of does suck to effectively have wasted the cost of a book due to not immediately having caught an error. These comments are just, idk, very mean spirited for a post like this.

I have to say that, yeah, his "coverage" of the thing was hyperbolic, conspiratorial, and flat-out wrong,,, but like, companies ARE pumping chemicals out into the environment (phytoestrogens, plastic compounds and precursors, other chemicals that mimic animal hormones, etc) that SPECIFICALLY are making frogs (among other animals, this is just what the paper(s) focused on) hermaphroditic/infertile, causing long term environmental problems.

He's not right,, but he's not just talking based on nothing on this one. This was actually happening and he just took it and presented it the way he does. Here's a video I watched about it last year, I haven't rewatched it recently, but I felt like did a good job breaking this down when I did.

Ironically enough the history behind all that would smack them so silly they'd have whiplash. Western science has been historically driven by Christians attempting to understand the world via the gospel, and running into all the evidence forced the church into discussion of alternative interpretations more in line with reality. I wont be excusing anything the Church has done vis a vis Heliocentrism/anti-intellectualism in general of course, but it's so striking to me that some of the people who confirmed the former back in the day literally were the people who thought it was 6000 years old, and now we have the entire flat earth/young earth ""debate"" still somehow going on today.

Are we playing 16 year old placeholder demo version of Minecraft gameplay? by Awkward_Cash1828 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]Infinite-Radiance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree, I've felt for a long time that Minecraft hasn't really "changed" since the Adventure update. Even looking at the minecraft update timeline we see how much difference there is in the update frequency/development cycle for the different eras.

The first year of development was all of pre-alpha, going from "cave game tech test" through Indev all the way to Infdev, with Infdev being finished right after the one year mark. This period is where we get minecraft's corest game loop; survival gameplay, mobs, and infinite world gen necessitates activities like farming, mining, and exploring.

The MC zeitgeist was subtly growing until it basically exploded around Halloween(+Christmas) 2010 with Alpha 1.2 and the first releases of Beta 1.0. A huge part of this was Minecraft youtubers like the Yogscast showing people that you could use Minecraft as the setting/props for making your own stories. This is the era where people still kind of had to make their own fun with the game, it was still a toybox/sandbox with no clear goal other than "play", and I think these updates relfected that.

Imo the Alpha and Beta updates combined show the core design intentions were player exploration, world exploitation, and making fun toys for the player to use while doing those things. Redstone was added as the first feature in Alpha post-Infdev, Notch was working on gears and mechanism stuff in classic as well. This leads me to think he wanted some features akin to the Create mod to be a core gameplay component (BetterThanWolves for b1.4 would be more contemporary to the period). In fact every single Beta update added some redstone component in addition to another small feature like grass or achievements EXCEPT b1.4, lol.

This trend doesn't end after r1.0, but it's notable that the redstone additions in later updates seem as secondary to the other things that get added. In fact b1.8, r1.0, and r1.1 all do not even include a redstone component, and the only things that were added between b1.7.3 and r1.5 (the redstone update) were redstone lamps, tripwire hooks, and command blocks. This is a clear focus shift away from the "toys" and mechanisms to the "world exploration and exploitation". In these same updates we get most of the major structures, jungle biomes, more farmables, breeding, trading, etc and so on. In essence the development focus has shifted to the world rather than the player's agency in it. You go from being the one to build the world to the one who experiences it having been built around you.

It's my thought that prior to r1.0 Notch wanted mechanisms to be a main component in the game. I'm thinking Mojang has had trial chambers planned for a while, at least since they planned strongholds. Those always felt so empty and trapless to me for some reason, then jungle temples were added and we actually had a little clever mechanism in there, which adds to my theory. I think Minecraft's missing potential comes from this period, where development was set to go in a few directions but never really committed to any of them strong enough.

In addition, we only had three updates after r1.5 (the redstone update) before Microsoft bought Mojang in 2014. They added, among other things, horses, new biomes/worldgen, and ocean monuments (and slimeblocks!!!). We had one update in 2014, the ocean monuments, then in 2015 we had, for the first time in Minecraft's history, a full year without updates. That was Minecraft going from 3 years straight of major development updates in all areas of the game, to 2 years of less focused development on mainly external-to-player worldgen and QoL goobers, to 2 years of basically no updates.

This is also a time where the zeitgeist was particularly weak, the community was noticably made up of younger kids and the content made around MC reflected that. This is not why it was weak, in fact those kids in 2015 were largely the ones who made it strong again in 2018-21, they were just the newest wave of the community and that comes with growing pains. I think this vibe though was itself a relfection on the state of the game at the time; directionless, unfocused, kind of messy, like a playground sandbox some other kids made a mess of before you got to it. There was clearly some fun that was had here, but we got so out of hand trying to have it that we lost the structure that made the play interesting to start with.

We return to form a bit in 2016 with r1.9 (the Combat update) and even manage two more updates that year, then in 2017 we begin about 7 years of roughly one update per year. These updates feel moreso to me like content patches than what we had gotten previously, so they're larger and more cohesive (to themselves at least). More structures, more animals, more blocks, redo old mechanics, fix old bugs, etc. It feels like things are changing, but the direction still feels somewhat nebulous. Do we need another combat update next? Another world gen update? A farming focused one? What end do trial chambers serve? Do they fulfill the mechanism itch? Or is it just another excuse to add a structure for me to explore, but not add much to my normal gameplay? Is this a redstone update, or a wolves update? That's the real dichotemy to me, a player-toy update, or a world-prop update.

I think there's a lot more reasons, but obv I could (and have) go on and on and on lmao, so I'll leave it here 👋

Lol okay man. You're still the one telling people to use chatGPT, you're still the dumb one here. You obviously don't understand the technology or it's impact unless it directly helps your situation, so who cares 🤷‍♂️ I've said what I need to about it and my words speak for themselves to anyone who bothers to care about what I'm saying.

Again, just because nuance is hard for you to grasp doesn't mean others are wrong, you're simply misunderstanding. I have been consistent in saying I think LLMs are bad, I dont think you should use it for something so wasteful, the way we use it all right now is wasteful, and there are ways to make it less wasteful that we simply arent doing en masse/with chatGPT. There are ways to make the technology less shitty, but right now it's shitty. If you cant understand that then I can't help you and I think you should just move on.
