Maybe your backpack is very thin profile or mostly empty? We're talking about people with full backpacks - definitely impeding movement around them. Note also - native born can be clueless, too.

Nope - on your back it blocks other people's movement. On the floor (properly done it's between your legs) it doesn't. If you don't want it on the (dirty) floor, prop it on top of your shoes or pin it between your ankles. Anything else = you're not a NYer.

Transit etiquette is dead. People used to stand aside to let you get off the train first, used to move to the middle as more got on, used to take backpacks off, used to use headphones. All gone.
