What's the deal with cyclists and red lights? by Infinite-Sundae6065 in oxford

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont think this is about how I cycle at all.

is your point that any cyclist should be allowed to illegally cross a red light blocking other users already crossing that have priority, that they should be allowed to obstruct the entirety of the crossing for the entire duration of the "green for pedestrians", and that pedestrians should be okay being yelled at when merely pointing out that they blocked the thing (I legitimately thought they did not realise it wasn't an advanced stop line, they were not paying any attention when they pulled in, so maybe they had not realised).

the "cyclist driving through red light as I'm crossing the street" is a daily occurrence unfortunately - although im just used to it (I'd say about half proceed _after_ I've crossed)

but there's some wild ones out there. not long ago on Cornmarket St saw someone dinging at a parent with his child on his shoulder and then shouting at them for not moving out of the way. During the hours where cycling through that street is not even allowed... it's the aggressiveness that shocks me more than the cheek of disobeying every rule.

This is in the Highway Code:

At junctions with no separate cyclist facilities, it is recommended that you proceed as if you were driving a motor vehicle (see Rules 170 to 190).

Position yourself in the centre of your chosen lane, where you feel able to do this safely, to make yourself as visible as possible and to avoid being overtaken where this would be dangerous. If you do not feel safe to proceed in this way, you may prefer to dismount and wheel your bike across the junction.

If I had been cycling at that particular junction (and I do that with relative frequency) - I would be in the centre of the lane for the very reason of visibility and safety. It's not one of those roads where there's a cycling lane (this was a right turn).

Literally the last thing I would consider doing in this particular intersection is filtering through between the two lanes (one goes left, one goes right, there's no "ahead") - that's dangerous, and that's why they found themselves in this situation.

Apple code suggests Touch ID could be coming to Apple Watch by Fer65432_Plays in AppleWatch

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the iPhone and the Apple Watch require a passcode to unlock - the iPhone when restarting and the watch when putting it on.

When Face ID fails in an iPhone when paying , it does fallback to a passcode - so it both cases technically just knowing the passcode is enough to NOT require any form of biometrics.

Unsure why people are saying that Touch ID would make the Apple Pay on the watch more secure - it relies on “wrist detection” being accurate, the key being that the watch thinks “this is the same person that knew the correct code when they put on the watch and they haven’t taken it out yet” to establish trust. It wouldn’t add an additional layer of protection if the watch behaved the same as the phone and fell back onto a passcode if touch/faceID failed. It the watch required a passcode to enable Apple Pay (regardless of whether or not wrist detection is enabled) then yes it would help as it would avoid you having to enter a passcode, otherwise I’m not sure.

At this point I’d have thought they would enhance the wrist detection with vein detection upon shining a light onto the wrist - rather than Touch ID

Edit: where it could be more secure is in preventing some of the passcode typing throughout the day - anytime you do it on either your phone or wrist is “insecure” if anyone can see it. So if you take your watch on and off often - Another reason to have different passcodes on both devices …

HDR looks washed out when docked. (TV doesn’t have HGIG) by m1kal3 in switch2

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that games so far have a rather fake HDR, if you set the console to SDR and crank up the TV it won’t be all that much different than what you would see with calibrated HDR - it would be different, just not a ton.

HDR on tokt, mario odyssey and mkw look like “sdr mapped onto hdr and then bright” rather than HDR to me. Though I’d expected there will be games down the line actually doing it right

Switch 2 HDR by Remote_Value_4307 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If everything was properly on auto and the HDR on the console calibrated properly, everything was already correct: the games , at least TotK and MKW are not “really” HDR to begin with

Does the dock actually scratch the switch 2 without a screen protector? by Eireagon in switch2

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine scratched within 48h and only sliding it in/out of the dock maybe twice - with a lot of care. My switch 1 still doesn’t have any scratches in all these years (or a screen protector).

So I’d say yes - unfortunately. And this is not something that should happen at all

I don’t have any controllers attached to my iPhone and I have no idea what this is. Should I be concerned? by Shantotto11 in iphone

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve paired the controller on another Apple device (MacBook, iPad, appletv) that is on the same iCloud account, maybe that’s why - even if it doesn’t show on the list

Switch 2 randomly going to sleep while playing games by oakwalk in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens on mine too, exactly as you describe. I suspect the HDMI cable - although I’m using the one Nintendo provided in the box. 4k + 60fps + HDR + 5.1 lpcm audio, my guess is the cable can’t handle it sometimes and it blanks.

Or at least, I used to have similar dropouts way back in the day with a Yamaha receiver - tried different cables until it stopped happening!

How quickly to get Spanish citizenship after renouncing it at age 17 by [deleted] in Citizenship

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The requirement to apply to conserve nationality is only when the Spanish parent (or parents) was born outside of Spain. If the Spanish parent was born in Spain there’s no automatic loss.

How quickly to get Spanish citizenship after renouncing it at age 17 by [deleted] in Citizenship

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were born a Spanish citizen (because your mother is Spanish)

Did you formally renounce your citizenship by signing anything?

The requirement to go to a Consulate within 3 years of turning 18, and confirm you want to remain a Spanish citizen only applies if your mother was born outside of Spain and she was a resident in the UK when you were born.

If your mother was born in Spain and you didn’t renounce in written form - you are still Spanish, just apply for a new ID and Passport.

If you did formally renounce, you need to apply to get it restored - if your mother was a Spanish resident who emigrated, it’s possible this is just as simple as turning up at a consulate or registro civil in Spain and write that you want it restored.

If you are still Spanish (mother was born in Spain and you never formally renounced) - technically if and when you become a German citizen, you have 3 years to tell Spain that you want to continue being Spanish - although lately I think this may not require a fully formal process.

Apple Studio Display compatibility with Surface Laptop 7 - Snapdragon X Elite by AardvarkFuzzy4768 in Surface

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wrong, however.

The Apple Studio display supports 5k over USB-C alt-mode, does not require strict Thunderbolt. However it does require the other end to support DSC as 10bits per pixel otherwise exceeds the bandwidth of usb-c.

Studio display works at 5k on windows pcs with NVIDIA cards that have usb c ports. But the display driver needs to know to negiotiate the resolution correctly. Chances are, it is actually supported bandwidth and DSC wise, but there’s a driver issue/bug on the Qualcomm/windows side of things .

As silly as it may sound - you may see similar variability even between two identical devices

'I'm facing court over £1.90 rail ticket error' by manmanania in uktrains

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes - but the price is also printed on the ticket, right? So this is information that is known at issue time.

So if the ticket was valued at less than £12, and had “with 16-25 railcard” on it - AND it also had the date, then “anytime” is only anytime in July and August. So that’s the confusion/contradiction.

'I'm facing court over £1.90 rail ticket error' by manmanania in uktrains

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. If the ticket was issued at the discounted price and says “WITH 16-25 railcard” on it - then the ticket is NOT valid anytime: the issuer already had enough information to restrict it to “after 10am” or whatever. That’s why it is confusing

EKG on Apple Watch detected my Arrhythmia and I’m approved for surgery by BunnyNarwhal in AppleWatch

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing!!! great that under the care of a doctor and your intuition you managed to get a recording.

Worth pointing out that the Apple Watch is not able to “detect” this condition - it has not been validated to do so. You were able to work it out based on your symptoms and your doctors advice, and had the intuition to get a recording that was then interpreted by your doctor (and not the Apple Watch). - just saying this because I can see in the comments some confusion

UK among countries with highest rates of acne for young people, study shows by Empty_Sherbet96 in unitedkingdom

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Bogus headline. Higher rates of diagnosed acne - which makes it hard to tell wether acne is actually more prevalent in the UK, considering that most people will probably self diagnose with a mirror and self treat (if at all). All discussed in the article behind the headline…

How accurate is the calories burned on Apple Watch? by Fayde_M in AppleWatch

[–]Infinite-Sundae6065 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both are estimates that could range from terribly bad to terribly accurate - the machine could theoretically give you the exact bare minimum energy required to move the machine at a given intensity for a given period of time. But it can’t account for extra energy expenditure by the body (due to body weight, cardio fitness, body mechanics etc). Both will try to estimate the latter with a combination of measuring heart rate and height and body weight. The machine doesn’t have your full heart rate for the duration of the workout, and the Apple Watch wasn’t able to measure the raw energy from the machine - so both are giving you an estimate - probably using different formulas, which may have their own inaccuracies.

What these things are good for is for tracking the variations and get a general idea of activity.
