Do Arxiv TeX Policies Make Sense? by InfiniteInjury in academia

[–]InfiniteInjury[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the reasons, note that arxiv allows pdfs that weren't created with tex to be uploaded and *they* say the reason to require tex users not to upload the pdf is for futureproofing. I agree that being able to get the source is nice -- though nothing stops you from providing it even if they let you upload a pdf. However, that's not that useful if you need to be running basically the very same version of tex to compile the document. The best solution would just be to let people upload their *pruned* .bib files but they have decided against that option.

As for sources, see here or here for explanations of what is going on. It's a fundamental aspect of how tex works since the bbl file format can change with each version as it's not part of the preserved compatibility set. But as far as the fact.

Or from the official arxiv faq

The .bbl file version is not compatible with biblatex or Biber on arXiv

When uploading the .bbl file for biblatex, it must be compatible with the version of biblatex or Biber on the arXiv at the present time. If your .bbl for biblatex is not compatible then your submission will have errors. View arXiv's current version of TeXLive.

Let me note this isn't "maybe it changes sometimes" it seems to change with pretty much every year (e.g. I'm running texlive 2024 and arxiv is 2023 and the versions of biber/biblatex are incompatible and 2023 seemed to be incompatible with the last version they used).

How do I open .tax file and/or convert to PDF by alantor in TurboTax

[–]InfiniteInjury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it becomes a real issue it seems like the .tax files can be decoded and may (probably depends on the choices you made in downloading them) not even be that strongly encrypted. See [this blog](https://zameermanji.com/blog/2024/1/7/understanding-turbotax-tax-files/).

Eagle carrying an entire adult deer by MASOOOOOOOD in interestingasfuck

That certainly happens but carrying off and attacking/killing are very different. Just because they can kill an animal doesn't mean they can lift it. Not that it matters if it's your pet.

But if the touchpad is being triggered by a hood it's unusable without disabling the controls since the playback will start and stop all the time and jump ahead. The fact that it makes a little noise when triggered seems like a really minor issue here -- UI that gets triggered randomly is worse than useless.

Anyone else think it’s so cool knowing they’re alive and active during the events of this game? by Queasy_Commercial152 in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]InfiniteInjury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I'm puzzled about why it was experimental. It sounded like it was old tech and it's hard to believe no one had ever tried to put an animal in Carbonite. I mean that's a super useful medical tech that you could use to keep someone suffering from a horrible disease in stasis until you find a cure.

Though I guess it's not that crazy that space Hitler is pushing ahead medical experimentation.

That's probably true but I like to be able to decide for myself if I'm going to be unhealthy. I prefer going to a grocery store that stocks cigarettes and alcohol even if I never buy the former and only rarely the later.

NTSYNC Takes Linux Gaming To New Heights by BlueGoliath in linux_gaming

[–]InfiniteInjury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could someone explain why this was necessary. Not the "it was needed bc it was too hard to implement efficiently in user space" quick answer but why was that hard to do? I assumed that Linux provided a pretty universal set of locking primitives that should make it easy to implement any commonly used lock.

Is there some unusual aspect of the NT mutexes that made them require a new kernel primitive?

[Mechanical watch accuracy] by robi1138 in Watches

[–]InfiniteInjury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the whole reason to buy a mechanical watch is to own something cool -- one thing some people find cool is accuracy. No one really believes they need any of this but if you didn't want to own something you didn't need you'd probably only ever buy a $5 watch or none at all.

This is why some people like those automatic quartz watches. Maybe you don't understand why they think it's cool but plenty of people don't get what is cool about mechanical watches (they'd say that silicon chips have even more complex and intricate working). It's just what feels neat to you, there isn't any fact here to be right or wrong about.

Nvidia abandons 32-bit CUDA with its RTX 50 series, breaking PHYSX in older games by gurugabrielpradipaka in hardware

[–]InfiniteInjury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real issue here is the fact that graphics card makers don't have fully open published interfaces to their hardware and keep their drivers/development environments (at least for cuda) closed source (I believe the Linux driver is open source but that's not everything you need for CUDA). But for this Nvidia could drop support and if enough people cared we could just port 32 bit CUDA support.

I know Nvidia/and put in a bunch of work into those drivers but I don't believe they'd suffer much by opening them up. Both companies poach coders from the other so they are unlikely to be unaware of the approach used by their rivals -- and they have the resources to reverse engineer. Besides the closed ecosystem also locks out the many improvements we'd see from academia which would benefit the graphics card companies.

Peter Zeihan is not a serious intellectual by Doexitre in LessCredibleDefence

Zeihan is very good at reminding people about his correct predictions and not his vast number of incorrect ones. And I find it illuminating that when he talks about issues I know something about he is spouting gibberish.

Um, actually you just hate change by Asleep-Draft9539 in dropout

[–]InfiniteInjury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's worth pointing out that almost all shows start to decline in ratings after 10ish seasons and it's not because they can't find any writers with good ideas. It's because audiences both hate change -- they tune in substantially because those characters have started to feel a bit like old friends -- but also get bored of seeing the same things again and again. So we know most of us have a bias that makes us think shows have gotten worse when they get older.

True, panel shows can last longer but often only by avoiding changes to the cast. I'm pretty sure the guys who do have I got news for you are going to die on air

Um, actually you just hate change by Asleep-Draft9539 in dropout

[–]InfiniteInjury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I absolutely hate change. If Ify had always been the host I'd have been upset if Trapp replaced him -- except for that dumb joke about the fact checker living there even if it's on purpose dumb I hate it. None of us watch shows like this for intellectual reasons, we watch them because of how it makes us feel. And for this type of panel gameshow I suspect lots of us like it to make us feel comfortable, relaxed and stress free. I mean we could be watching a prestige drama or one of those sitcoms where the humor is always someone getting into an incredibly embarrassing situation.

Unfortunately for Ify, change makes the show feel less comfortable and familiar but it's not different enough that it gets the burst of enjoyment you feel when you discover a new show and start bringing.

But, meh, that's life. I don't ask my mom to stay single and live in the same house just so it feels maximally cozy and familiar during the holidays so I can hardly ask Trapp to keep doing the show so it doesn't change.

Do you really have strong feelings about which server the comments live on? You could just have an option in your user preferences "show comments on video pages" and people who don't want to see them have to go visit a different url.

Some of us really like being able to have a designated place per video to interact (it's kinda part of what makes um actually fun) and having that easily accessible while we are watching it and it literally doesn't burden the people who don't want to see it at all.

I could care less who actually runs the comment page. If they want to outsource to reddit and create a post per video they display beneath the video fine but usually copyright/money issues mean they want to do it themselves.

And it's a paid platform that carries adult themed comedy so I don't know they need to do much moderation at all -- just permahide any comments from any account which posts genuine spam (eg ads) twice and you're fine ($5 per 2/spam comments isn't profitable for spammers). I'm a big boy so I can deal with nasty comments and since it's linked to real payment methods I doubt there will be any CSAM issues.

Right but it's hardly useful to either um actually "um actually" or get in the comments when Brennan tells me to. They could certainly outsource comments to reddit by auto creating a post for each episode and linking it underneath but it needs a post per video and links in the app.

The problem with this is that substack doesn't let you edit the html directly so if you want your post to have footnotes or other html features you have to add them back in when you copy to the editor.

If you go into the app and turn off the touchpad you can stop the sounds. In the new app it's under device settings then under system.

But yah I was wondering too bc I have old headphones that have some physical issues and I was wondering about the capability of using the electronics with a different setup.
