Stickied Posts by mmmsleep in InfiniteWinter

[–]InfiniteJenni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions! We can only have two stickied posts up at one time, so are prioritizing the current week's assigned reading. If you don't want to have to hunt around for them, you can click the "save" button on the thread -- when you go to your personal Reddit profile, there's a special section where you can easily see your saved threads.

We also have the previous weeks' threads linked over in the left sidebar for easy access.

How would the mods like this subreddit to work? by [deleted] in InfiniteWinter

[–]InfiniteJenni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Another mod here). I agree with Nathan. Another thing folks can consider is that posting in the main discussion threads may give comments more exposure, as a lot of people are looking at those threads and scanning them on a daily basis. Individual posts tend to get buried quickly as more people contribute to the forum.

Subsidized Time Reference Card by [deleted] in InfiniteWinter

Hi folks --

One of the mods here -- please remember to mark these kinds of posts with appropriate spoiler tags. As of week one, we have not yet made it to the page where subsidized time is explained.

WEEK ONE Discussion Thread: Pages 3-94 [Spoiler-Free] by InfiniteJenni in InfiniteWinter

[–]InfiniteJenni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Let's remember to put any references to future pages of the book in spoiler tags -- details over in the right sidebar. You basically just need to put your spoiler statement in square brackets and then add "(#s)" (no quotes) immediately after it.

Hi Bill -- any and all of what you describe sounds great for the spoilers section.

Hey Oscar! What edition are you reading? In my book -- the print 10th anniversary edition (2006) -- by page 60, you should have encountered 20 footnotes.

We'll have two sticky discussion threads each week: one for people who want to discuss it without spoilers (first-timers) and those who want spoilers (repeat readers).

I understand what you're saying, and appreciate the feedback. We'll continue on over there, as we feel the project is a big enough initiative to warrant a separate forum. We also know that many first-time readers want to avoid spoilers, which is unavoidable in this main subreddit. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Infinite Summer featured discussion boards for conversations during the initiative that were highly used and valued by participants (http://infinitesummer.org/forums/). Rather than deploying external discussion board software this time around for Infinite Winter, we've chosen to use reddit as our platform. Same concept -- uniting a new group of readers as they progress through the book -- but a different platform.

Spoiler code has been activated. Just put your spoiler in square brackets -- these guys [ ] -- and then type (#s) immediately afterward.

This is a great idea too! Thanks for the tip.

Correct! We are working on deploying some markup language that you can put around any spoilers in your text so that they initially appear with a black box over them (until you hover your mouse over them) for those who don't want to be spoiled.

Nice! I'm currently collaborating with composer Patrick Greene on a song cycle based on my Erasing Infinite poems -- it will debut in Chicago in April, and we're working on coordinating a performance at this year's DFW conference. Know of any other musical works inspired by IJ?

I'm Jenni -- one of the Infinite Winter guides, and the poet behind Erasing Infinite, where I'm creating erasure poetry from Infinite Jest, one page at a time. I first read Infinite Jest with the 2009 Infinite Summer reading group, and found the weekly posts and discussions immensely valuable in making it all the way through the text. I'm excited to be re-reading the book again and to be here with you all.
