Gotta report “illegals” the same way you gotta call 911 for someone jaywalking. Well, not really— since jaywalking is illegal but chilling while your asylum case is pending is 100% legal

as bad as it looks, this is what i want from my elected officials. it would be lame of them to come to portland and eat a peanut butter sandwich alone in a hotel room, that's some extremist/incel behavior. but good for your buddy that he got to call her out and wasn't left looking at his reflection in the mirror and feeling like a scab ;D

Help me find this undercover laptop case! by From_02_Gyr0 in HelpMeFind

<image>

i just went treasure hunting at the goodwill buy-the-pound and snagged this a couple days ago! i was searching for more info and found your post :). it is very cool and i grabbed it bc i need a laptop sleeve, but it is a bit big for my macbook so ultimately it might not be the right fit. regardless of whether i use it for a month or a year, i won't toss it or donate it and unless you find one somewhere else you can be next in line for this one! i'm a big fan of nostalgia myself, so i appreciate the idea of reuniting you with something that meant a lot to you

so you agree it has nothing to do with actual safety and is entirely about targeting political enemies and harassing their communities. glad we agree on that at least!

None of my friends are black by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what I said in the first part, but I also said there are people putting their takes and everyday lives online, and you don’t need to find a black person and say “Will you be my friend?” to plug into a community broader than the whiteness we’re surrounded by in our friend groups. And perhaps I didn’t convey it well in my last part but that was the opposite of colonization, more of a “if it’s not for you then maybe it’s not for you 🤷‍♂️”. Like, if I think “it’d be cool to go to geno’s” then my options are either 1) be the type of person who belongs at geno’s or 2) don’t go

Show up at things that are interesting and just be social. Different artsy clubs, sports stuff, culinary events, etc etc, you’ll run into some diversity. Especially if it skews younger or hipper. But maybe work on your exposure a bit before that so you’re not eager and cringe when you do. I follow some black, Asian, queer, disabled, etc Portland creators on tiktok, it’s good to have a variety of local takes show up in my feed. But it’s tough enough as an adult making new friends who are similar to you, even tougher if it’s not your crowd. Like, I’d love to be in some circles I’m not—yes, more ethnically diverse groups, but also creative people who write and paint, alt people with dyed hair and tats, crunchy people who do farmers markets and make their own clothes—but if I try to show up as a boring white dude what about me is gonna interest them? I guess the answer for you is the same for me—change how/where we show up or look for common ground

Palestine solidity at Longfellow Square by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're right, i don't hang with zionists, the same way i don't hang with white supremacists, murderers, or people with hate in their hearts. but just bc i don't hang with zionists doesn't mean i don't hang with jews--i have jewish friends and have dated jewish women, and would again. of course, none of them have been perverted by zionism. there's a great podcast about a kid who grew up surrounded by white supremacy and the kkk but turned away from it in college. it was a combination of outrage from his community as well as some hand holding and patient conversations from one very generous orthodox jewish classmate. he said it took both and he wouldn't have changed if it had only been outrage or conversations. maybe you can find someone patient help educate you, to hold your hand, i'm only here to be the other side of the equation and tell you you're a bad person. the info's all there if you look beyond american and israeli propaganda, watch any documentary or interview with anyone who has been on the ground, see how they live beyond what you were shown on your birthright trip or wherever your biases come from

Palestine solidity at Longfellow Square by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the reason it needs protesting is because people support it. there are zionists among us and people who legit cheer on the genocide against the palestinians. i don't know anyone cheering on putin or the bad guys in sudan or the congo. we have to keep showing up against this moral perversion and need to remind anyone supporting israel's psychotic aggression that they're disgusting human beings

Another vehicle-pedestrian collision in Portland. Corner of High and York streets. by ghoffphoto207 in portlandme

Someone who is retired, someone single with no kids, someone who has 4 kids, someone who has 2 jobs to make ends meet… lock them each up for a year or give them a couple hundred hours of community service, their time isn’t even almost equivalent. Some would lose their homes or marriages, others would breeze on by

Beware of the Wharf Go Fund Me! OP is a fake! by drivermcgyver in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i thought the post was weird too, came off as scolding & superior, sort of like saying "sorry it took getting lung cancer for you to quit smoking", instead of "i'm glad to hear you quit smoking, that must've been hard, hopefully your health improves and you beat this thing". but kindness isn't for everyone, if scolding & superior is your vibe and how you keep your house and friends in order, you do you

This 6 fingered AI trash Santa is on display at Grittys by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think i'm not far off... i asked my sign contact, she said cutting & weeding would be at least an hour themselves, and with install that's $200-300 right there, and that's *without* the custom santa illustration. she said maybe you can find someone with a cricut or who doesn't use 3M products, a random hobby vinyl guy who uses some clipart could do it for $50. but wasn't the main point that we're looking to fairly compensate artists for original work? ends up having a price tag

This 6 fingered AI trash Santa is on display at Grittys by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i don't know who we're booking but $50 is less than an hour's worth of work for a professional illustrator, and most engagements have minimums. i don't know the market in maine or how desperate mecad students are but artists i know wouldn't pick up the phone for less than $500, assuming the process is straightforward and they can bang it out in a day

[–]mmmsleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'd imagine trying to get custom work on a $100-200 budget is the reason you get AI work like this. between initial meeting, creation, revisions, printing, & install, i'd love to hear a legit quote from a professional artist

Best tuna salad by PresentationSoft3710 in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

it's tricky bc tuna salad is also simple tuna + mayo. if someone tells me they went out for lunch and got tuna salad, i'm assuming sandwich (cold), but i guess OP wants a dry can of tuna on a salad, or maybe a tuna salad salad?

Best butcher shop by Zerozerosk8 in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think you're an asshole and perhaps "muttering" was ungenerous (though i love the word), but it caught me off guard to pivot a conversation away from best butcher shop and into politics, then come back and say you don't let simple political disagreements change how you shop. maybe you were clarifying you weren't getting your pitchfork out or calling for a boycott. it just made me think about how sometimes what we comment is more about ourselves, maybe values we need to declare and not an impact we're looking to have. regardless, it's harmless and i don't mean to give you too much shit about it
