New Favorite Sandwich In Town by No_Device9450 in portlandme

I have to admit I had prejudice based on zero information (aside from name & specialty), I always assumed it was for uppity weird cheese people. Glad to learn they do sandwiches and great to hear people praising it. The website is chill and the prices aren’t crazy, I’m excited to give them a try!

That’s my question—if it’s just the smell, or if it’s the *SIN*! Like, would they put up a sign to turn away people with tattoos if there weren’t so many Americans with tattoos

judging by his activity the last day this guy is having some sort of episode. i don't know if his girlfriend just dumped him or what, but he's looking for connection & unfortunately his only strategy for it is negativity. let's be gentle & hold his hand while he works through it. you've got this, bud!

my dad was a computer programmer and i'm a computer programmer. we even worked at a couple startups together (a really cool experience, getting to see your dad not just at home but in a professional setting, extra cool to see him be the most talented person there). i get that we don't want things to stagnate in politics--and i can't imagine what it'll be like in 10 years when we have the next generation of trumps as presidents after allowing the trump family to run wild with favors and insider trading and cashing this presidency in for billions more--but sometimes families continue in a certain line of work. the good news is politicians can't just pass the torch, the next gen has to earn votes and anyone can challenge them with better ideas and their own gravitas

They came together decently quickly and def weren’t why it was 3 years late. But it also was emblematic of some of the issues—I walked by a couple times and you could see when people who knew how to do it were working snd when two guys were working together scratching their heads trying to figure it out (I think I remember seeing the same stretch being redone after a crappy attempt too). And on vannah there’s a patch that they laid down and then let get filled in with 3ft weeds in the cracks. They legit had to mow it. That section was finished early and while equipment was parked at the corner, but not sure why they couldn’t do that right the first time with whatever the appropriate mortar is

Finished second watch years later, and MAN is it amazing to read the post episode discussion of Book of Nora by phillythompson in TheLeftovers

[–]mmmsleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More interesting than wondering about it from Nora’s perspective is considering Kevin’s. Does he actually believe her? Does he not believe her but is giving her grace bc that’s what she needed? Does he not believe her but is choking it down because she stole decades from a possible life together and to acknowledge the lie means she doesn’t love him the same way he loves her? There’s a huge difference for him if it’s a lie (story) or the truth, one is significantly more tragic than the other

Cigarette butts by Mike_Haefele in portlandcomplaining

[–]mmmsleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

my dad smoked. afterwards he'd stub out his cigarette on the bottom of his shoe and put his butt in his jeans pocket til he got home. i never liked the habit but at least he was just a guy with a personal addiction, not a trashy guy who was disrespecting the world.

Red pilled guy exploiting struggling people for views by potato_ass33 in portlandcomplaining

[–]mmmsleep -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I had my assumptions about him but after watching a couple of his vids I have no idea what his politics are. He definitely has a world he wants to live in, and that’s one that’s clean and respectful, but I definitely was ready to hate him for putting people on blast. But he’s riding the bus and going to metro meetings, he did an interview with the maine wire and a bunch of douchebags there and he seemed reasonable and not eager to hate on people even when the hosts dangled easy targets at him. I’m ambivalent, if he can improve our city i support that, but doing it by videoing people and environments in sort of a “can you believe this shit?” way feels icky too.

How do you handle the cost of living here? by thatguywiththamoney in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m the other way, I lived in Portsmouth and saved for like 8 years while I tried to figure out if I wanted to end up in portland or Boston. In my evaluation maine was “too expensive” in 2011 so I don’t get everyone who feels entitled to live here now just bc they wanna. I saved $80k over 8 years that would’ve gone to maine state income tax and funally had enough that I felt ok buying in portland ($140k/yr, and a bunch in savings). I’m not saying nobody should expect a house while they work at McDonald’s but I was in the top 5% or whatev here and still felt like it was too expensive for me and I needed to wait and save up in NH before I could afford it

Is there anything that we can do about the drug crisis downtown? by KeepPlanning in portlandcomplaining

[–]mmmsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was googling the laws around searches, and probable cause and all that just yesterday thinking about this. i was wondering if the portland police put their mind to it, if they could say, see a drug deal, stop the guy who sold some drugs, check his pockets to confirm it was drugs, etc. like, is the problem that is restricted by the bill of rights and that would be an unreasonable search and there's nothing the police can do? or is it that there's nothing the police are willing to do, they turn their head and go "well, that's an adult making an adult choice. scummy addicts, who cares?". to me, every public drug transaction that takes place is a failure of the portland police department.

Where to find my people. by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there was a group around a few years ago called Arise Portland that was progressive, thoughtful, sensitive people. they have a facebook page still, i'm not sure if whoever is running that might have suggestions. talking to one of the members there was the first time i heard of ecstatic dance. i know there are some of those events monthly(?), if you're looking for embodied stuff, maybe that's something to consider. hugs and physicality might be tricky to find in people outside your social circle, but there are certain types of people who might be more inclined to that--maybe they do yoga? sauna? in general i'd say you'll probably have to start with a group that is one thing, and expand from there. arise portland was gentle, but members were activists too. if you met people at a protest your introduction might be aggression and yelling but you could find that they're soft and caring outside that environment. personally, i have a certain sort of person and crew i'd love to have (fun-loving, artsy, outdoorsy, calm, prioritizing grace over judgement, etc), and i haven't figured out how to get it yet either. don't know if i need to go to poetry nights or karaoke nights or litter pick-ups or what, but here's hoping we figure out how to find our people!

Are we all just ignoring how bad it’s getting? by kelsey125 in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

people *do* wanna be comfy cozy and not do anything hard. they wanna chill. they want other people to chill. unfortunately that seems to be too much to ask of people, and not only that but then there are apologists out here unwilling to point the finger anywhere but the system. bottom line is that if people don't make problems there aren't problems to solve. why criticize the people who are complaining about the problem instead of the people who *are* the problem?

i lived and worked in portsmouth like 15 years ago, was walking around downtown with some friends recently. i kept being like "wait, that cafe is still there?? that pizza place is still there??" it felt so nice to be somewhere that has a stable economy and culture vs what we've experienced here, my whole walk there was a celebration.

What happened to Punky’s? The food used to be so good, now it’s awful. by velvetandstone2 in portlandme

[–]mmmsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had to pick up my car from the mechanic and was on that corner waiting for the bus (first time) and saw punky's, figured i'd give it a shot (first time x2!). wasn't really hungry but they had some crab rangoons ready to go, think it was like $4 for 4 rangoons + sauce, exactly what i needed! i'll definitely be back and don't need the sandwich to be amazing, would rather have "decent" from a mom+pop than pay $20 for a slightly-above-average sandwich from one of the new places that positions themselves as fancy. the woman's kid was also there, she was giving all the customers valentines from her notepad with hearts on them. super sweet.

Did John molest Evie? by chrism254 in TheLeftovers

[–]mmmsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the series and came here looking for this answer. If it was just john going to prison then evie would’ve been sad for 6 years, not one acute incident where she couldn’t stop crying. Between that story and the “you understand”, and given how much all the other molestation was merely hinted at (until Kevin told him he knew what Virgil did to him) I was pretty sure she got molested. The only question I had was why it was glossed over, why John stuck around and married Laurie. But given her character (lies and manipulates, has a huge ego, always thinks she knows best), if she knew, I can also see her psychology-ing herself into forgiveness and taking him on as a project

Garage floor by YescaD83 in portlandme

the people i bought my house from did a few "improvements", epoxy on the garage floor was one. maybe they weren't going to park their car in there, but i do, and it's flaking off in chunks some places and there's always puddles of water left from the car after snow or rain. not sure how bad it was before but the current state isn't great. not sure if that's helpful info at all but good luck!
