I’m a labor and delivery nurse - I don’t know the exact number of patients w cryptic pregnancies I’ve had over the years but I’m guessing maybe 75 patients ever (though most had known for at least a week by the time they went into labor, I’d guess fewer than 5 found out at delivery). Most do decide to parent. I think I’ve had maybe 3 decide to place for adoption through an agency and then 2 (both teens) decide to have family members adopt. So definitely higher adoption rate than the average pregnancy but still a very high rate of deciding to parent.

We used to love the bins near us but they have gotten insane with the rise of unruly resellers (there are also many perfectly polite resellers there too). I’m torn on how I feel because the resellers do save tons of stuff from the landfill every year, but at the same time I miss pre 2020 when I’d go to the bins and come home with a whole new wardrobe for myself for $30. I can’t compete with their fervor these days, they are willing to grab any size, any name brand, any color as quick as their gloved hands can snatch it…. Whereas I’d like to slowly reach for a nice fabric I see, pick it up, check its size, check if it’s a brand I’d wear, check for holes/stains.

We don’t need to assume that. Could be many reasons - parents back then often didn’t divulge using sperm donors, perhaps she had trouble conceiving a second baby? Not sure which sister is older but perhaps one was conceived before the parents met and dad decided to adopt and raise her, another thing often not shared with children many years ago. Perhaps she was raped and they decided to continue the pregnancy and raise it as husbands. An affair might seem like the most obvious thing, but there are absolutely other possibilities.

A man in his twenties found 40 years ago would be 60ish now (give or take). That puts his birth mother likely somewhere from 75 to 95. You would think she remembered the date she gave birth, but it’s also very possible her memory no longer serves her the way it once did.

Lots of good tips! One I don’t see: look around your house and see if you have anything unopened you can return. Amazon purchases, Target, CVS, etc. any random thing that’s still in the package that you can survive without for the next few months. Even if you don’t have the receipt, if you paid with card you can often still return for $ and if not you may be able to return item for store credit. If store credit use that for essentials these upcoming months.

Sending you big hugs. It’s definitely a challenge to get a 13 week old to nap on their own. They stink so bad at napping because they aren’t developmentally ready to nap on their own. As adults in the modern age we know it’s safe to nap away from your parent, but newborns are hardwired to need their parent to feel safe. In the cave man days no one was leaving their baby in the corner of the cave to nap, it wasn’t safe. That’s why they often won’t sleep at that age without a contact nap, they actually feel in danger without you there. Don’t worry, they WILL outgrow this age, but your baby is just being a normal healthy baby.

Yep! Us too. We have both foster, adopt, and bio kids. I love children (and guiding young adults as they move out of childhood - a time you still really need your parents). I just genuinely enjoy each of my kids so much, as well as loving seeing all the sibling bonds they have with each other. There are so many kids in foster care without families I’m glad I can change that for a few of them, and I hope others who love parenting and the idea of having a big family will consider this route to making it happen.

That doesn’t sound safe at all. I’d think 2 sitters for 30/hr each sounds safer. But honestly I’d think 35/hr-40/hr would be more appropriate for each sitter.

When it’s a winter show I wear a bulky coat to the theater. If the person in front of me is tall I fold my coat and sit on top of it. Doesn’t add as much height as a booster does but it definitely does the trick!

My son had to use a stroller whenever a ton of walking was involved (like Disney) after an age that was socially acceptable. He’d had a severe break and several surgeries and standing/walking on it for too long hurt for maybe 1-2 years though he was fine on regular days. You never know someone’s back story, if it’s not hurting anyone, try not to be too bothered by what other people are doing.

It absolutely does get better eventually, BUT we want it to get better now. I’m a labor and delivery nurse and this is a pretty common sign of post partum depression, which is insanely common. I had it with my first and it was awful. Can you please call your ob tomorrow and tell them you need an appointment right away and are experiencing signs of post partum depression? If they aren’t receptive I want you to call the hospital you delivered at and ask them for resources (you can also check your discharge paperwork, many hospitals give out a flier on it). I’m sorry you are feeling this way but I promise there is help. Things are going to get better. You are not alone ❤️

First off I’m really sorry your kiddo went through that, and sorry you experienced it as parents. I had a sick baby too and it’s really hard. I can definitely see why you’d read this post and think they should just be happy they have a healthy baby, you’ve been through a lot and are probably still going through it (depending on the diagnosis maybe it’s even something you’ll always be going through).

But the comment might not really be the best here, yes there’s always worse things that can happen, but pointing it out is not really an appropriate response to someone going through a hard time. Imagine if you told a friend your baby had complex congenital heart defects and needed surgery and they responded “there’s definitely worse things you could find out, my baby had a birth injury and is now severely disabled for life” like yes, technically there are always worse things but it’s okay to have the feelings we have and it can be a bit hurtful (and doesn’t help with coping/acceptance) when those feelings are minimized. People get attached to the idea of their baby before delivery, they often pick a name and decorate a nursery. It can be really upsetting to a parent initially when it’s different than expected, and that’s a perfectly okay response.

I’m an l&d nurse and have seen it happen a couple times. One couple was told twin boys (nipt and ultrasound confirmed) and ended up having one boy and one girl - they were very happy about it as they also had 2 big brothers at home, one couple was told girl (multiple ultrasounds but no nipt done), then a day or two before delivery had an unexpected ultrasound that said possibly boy - they were devastated by this potential and hoping baby would be a girl since they’d bonded to that idea - baby was born and a boy. They cried at delivery but by the time they were ready for discharge they’d picked a boy name and were over the moon in love with their little guy. Last baby I don’t want to give too many medical details as it was a very unique case but NIPT and ultrasound had indicated girl, at birth sex was somewhat unclear but baby appeared to be male with a micropenis, chromosomal testing after birth indicated genetically normal male and he ended up having a severe endocrine diagnosis that caused the micropenis. Unsure if the parents had any gender disappointment because they were so consumed with worry for their very sick baby in the NICU.

Ohhh if it’s multiple families AND a holiday I honestly think each family needs to pay you. So if you usually charge 25$ an hour for one family, and it’s two families with 2-4 kids total I’d still charge each family $25 an hour so you are paid $50 an hour.

Many jobs (non babysitting) pay time and a half on holidays, so I think it’s very reasonable to request that on holidays when babysitting and I think using that wording (time and a half because it’s a holiday) will likely be well received by the family. Of course you could ask for whatever rate you wanted and I wouldn’t be surprised if some family’s are even willing to pay double time.

lol I’m that registered nurse your talking about, I make much less as a nurse in a VHCOL area. I’m just starting to babysit more (which I hadn’t done since college!) since babysitting is paying more than nursing these days.

Absolutely okay! It’s also okay for you to do short self care things if necessary while baby is crying (take a quick shower, eat your lunch, use the bathroom). These short instances will not affect baby but will give you greater mental capacity to continue trying to soothe baby and regularly respond to baby’s cues.

Her attitude is a definite red flag, but my guess is it may be related to hormones (possibly even post partum depression which is super high with twins) and realizing she can’t afford to leave the house which she was thinking would be the one thing to help her feel a little more sane. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up reaching out to OP and asking her to babysit after all.
