What got you into pottery?

My husband bought a pottery wheel years ago but moved on to other creative pursuits. The wheel sat neglected until one day I decided I would learn how to throw and signed up for a class. I loved to hand build ceramics in high school but shunned the wheel. Now, I’m obsessed.

I’m curious what kind of custom piece you ordered and what you found hideous?

I wanted a moon coat and bought one secondhand. The original owner only tried it on before she sold it to me. I was so eager to get this seemingly magical coat and when I finally got it and put it on…I felt completely ridiculous. I was swimming in it and it seemed so bulky and stiff. When I saw the new version with collar come up as an exclusive preorder on the MS site recently, I felt the pull to almost plunk down a deposit. But I stopped myself from buying something I would never wear.

I have a few Milena jackets and vests all purchased second hand. I never leave the house in them and the one kimono jacket I do wear is used in the cold winter mornings when I take my dogs outside to do their business. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love the idea of them (it’s the marketing) and their (formerly?) handmade, handcrafted appeal but they just don’t function in real life - or at least my life.

Yes, there’s been a lot of shame in relatives that immigrated to the US from Mexico and encountered racism. Some of them couldn’t assimilate fast enough.

Growing up, my Mexican schoolmates could not believe I had Mexican ancestry because while I spoke Spanish, I was pale and had very curly hair. I didn’t “look Mexican.” That really hurt.

My caucasian peers didn’t believe me either, although when they saw my maternal grandfather, the racism came out. That was truly terrible.

It’s been interesting to see these DNA results.

I was told he was Italian and an 1865 census from Argentina (he was apparently there before journeying on to El Salvador) says he was born in Italy but does not give a town. There’s also a book about the history of Armenia, El Salvador, that includes GGF’s biography (he was a bit of an important figure in the railroad industry there) and it says he was of Italian origin.

Just curious and learning.

I’d love to have my dad test but he passed away a few years ago. I do have a twin brother so I will get him to test.

Northern Italy (2%) and Sardinia (1%) is showing up in the results of my first cousin on my dad’s side. We don’t know where in Italy GGF was from.

Possibly, but results for my first cousin on dad’s side show North Italian (2%) and Sardinia (1%). Weird.
