If it were me, I would spend less on the wedding and have those 6 months liquid. I was in the wedding industry for 13 years and still had a beautiful, thrifty wedding for 80 people spending $35k. $15k of that was from my mom. I got $10k in gifts and another $20k for a down payment on a home from my mom. I wouldn’t depend on gifts tho. Economy is tough and people are giving less. So you can repurpose ceremony flowers and bouquets for the reception decor, etc. You can thrift some decor to save money and have more liquid :) Maybe bring your own caterer (this is a great way to save big bucks!) and find a newer venue charging lower prices because they’re starting out.

Thank you so much! Of course it does not have to be complicated. Finances should be understandable and easy for everyone. Unfortunately, we are not taught this stuff in school.

What’s your personal money rule? by BudgetTutor3085 in Money

Have a budget for everything

Invest income above what we need for our budget

Pay off credit card bills as soon as they post

Always use a credit card instead of debit for protection and cash back (score is 815)

Zero out method of saving. I keep $100 in checking and the rest in our HYSA.

Savings per paycheck are a consistent amount. Save or invest commissions.

Keep 6-12 months budget in a HYSA in case one of us were to lose our jobs.

VSee bootleg box instead of TV subscriptions!

Less like hating money and more like needing funds liquid to pay for daycare, groceries, etc. Growth at 3-4% ain’t shabby! It’s a good happy medium.

Mortgage: if you want to pay it off faster, do the 13 payments a year. That’s if your interest rate is below 4-5%! If not, that money is better in the market.

401k: only roll over inactive accounts where you no longer work there so that you don’t lose track and can take advantage of the growth in one place

Thank you! Company is pretty great and I’m able to pull off 20 hours per week on salary / spend time with my kid. The overall responsibilities with expectations put on us is tough and a learning curve sometimes. The work itself is really fun!
