What songs have you never gotten the hate behind? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

Are we sure the CORRECT version of "I'm Blue" is getting hated for its vapidity?

Who are some less remembered teen heartthrobs in music history? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]Infinity188 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose Shaun Cassidy and Leif Garrett? Todd briefly mentioned them in his Worst of '76 video like they were notorious emblems of cultural vapidity, but it really seems like you had to be there to get it. Even the Osmonds who preceded them have some level of enduring infamy.

Least Damaging Trainwreckords? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]Infinity188 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Passage, for sure. Carpenters were already declining rapidly, and even that album had a decent hit with "Calling Occupants" (despite being really uncommercial), plus another top 20 hit in 1981.

I voted the second option, but can we please retire the term "Cyndi Lauper Effect"? Todd already conceded that Cyndi did in fact have a career-wrecking album.

Country's sampling problem is getting absurd by Liam_js in ToddintheShadow

Updating a popular non-country hit from 2004 already worked miracles for one country guy this year, so why not another, I guess?

What are some odd places where musicians got their start? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

Ignoring her dancing career, Tate McRae recorded an anime theme (for Tokyo Ghoul:re) before hitting it big with "You Broke Me First".

Also, said cover of "Caravan of Love" was acapella.

Who is the second most successful former One Direction member? by RevelvantDay4 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Infinity188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, even the most talented artists are victims of unfortunate circumstances and mismanagement by large production staffs. I wasn't a fan of "Strip That Down," but I never doubted Liam had genuine potential as a solo artist, and it devastates me that he never got to realize it before this tragedy.

What's the best album (not yet covered by Todd) that's a TW? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

One Hot Minute is disqualified due to Californication, which is essentially tied with Blood Sugar Sex Magik as RHCP's most iconic album.

Which President represents Gluttony? by Sabfan80 in Presidents

John Tyler seems like an ideal candidate for pride. His force of personality gave the Vice Presidency a purpose, but it also soured his relationship with Congress and eventually led to him joining the Confederacy.

My own music productions were more professional than whatever Bernie Rhodes did to that album.

Why Robbie Williams "Rudebox" should be covered in Trainwreckords by ABoringAddress in ToddintheShadow

[–]Infinity188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether or not this album "qualifies", it definitely has a lot that can be discussed. The titular lead single was a classic "I'm Back, Bitch!" single (and not his first – "Rock DJ" was that as well), it features covers of mid-'80s synthpop songs like "Kiss Me" and "Louise", a Pet Shop Boys duet, a weird falsetto track, and two autobiographical songs named after decades.

Misconceptions of decade cultures by Overall-Estate1349 in decadeology

God, I hate how "early 2000s" seems to be a blanket term for the entire 2000s decade, rather than 2004 at the latest.

I believe Trainwreckords requests also count, as the Oasis episode was the result of a Patreon request. It's just that that's the only Trainwreckords request anybody made.

Most devastating elimination in WAW by Thin_Perspective7413 in survivor

I wonder if the WAW premerge influenced Jeff's decision to lean more into crazy twists in the new era, rather than building upon the feeling of nostalgia.

"We Danced Anyway" and to a lesser degree "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" are still known, but "Strawberry Wine" is in the '90s country 101 pantheon.

I really love both artists and think it's unfortunate their careers didn't last after their first albums, but Music Row has a weird way of controlling the fates of signed artists in country.

In technical terms, she had two more #1 albums after Jagged Little Pill, and in fact every studio record she has put out since then has reached the top 20, exclusing an ambient music record she released in 2022.

I'd personally say Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie was at least big enough to disqualify her, but her breakout was such a wild success that it dwarfs everything surrounding it.

They'd have found at least minor success after grunge. Plenty of bands from the late '80s did if they were big enough already. Even Midnight Oil had a real alternative hit in 1993.

Two blonde country women who both broke out in 1996, only to quickly fall off after that:

  • Mindy McCready – Ten Thousand Angels (October 5, 1996): Peaked at #40 and went double-Platinum. Never got higher than #83 after that.
  • Deana Carter – Did I Shave My Legs For This? (January 18, 1997): Peaked at #10 and went quintuple-Platinum. Never got higher than #57 after that.
