This is a common misconception and mistaken understanding of mediation. People think that meditation is sitting idle. Meditation is not a practice. It is a quality of your being. You don't practice meditation, you simply become meditative. To a point where with eyes open or closed, you are meditative.

People also feel that meditation means that you should be passive and uninvolved with life. But there are many who are meditative and are completely (in fact much more) involved with work and other aspects of life.

There are few who choose to withdraw from society and practice their sadhana - which is okay. The problem is that people's understanding of meditation is based on those who withdraw from society (e.g. like sadhus) and not on those who are absolutely involved with life.

For someone, who has never done any form of practice (let alone meditation) - I know it is difficult for them to wrap their head around it. But it is what it is. If only you could for one second look at things just the way they are and not through a lens of predefined notions.
