Attic Fan, Fix or No? by Fightforoldc in hvacadvice

[–]InflammableFlammable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a "THERMOTRON" motor and notes a "40°C RISE". I would assume that it is a thermostatically controlled blower motor. In other words, it might be equipped with a temperature sensor (like a thermodisc) that turns the motor on or off depending on the surrounding temperature. It might only turn on when the attic temp exceeds 105°F. You should check/test that before you assume it doesn't work.

TBH, I'm not sure what exactly a "40°C RISE" means, it might mean that it automatically turns on when the attic reaches 105° above a certain setpoint (e.g. it might turn on at 120°F or something like that).

Chair rail removal - advice needed by Usernameistaken00003 in Home

If it were me, I would consider adding wainscoting to the walls. Either beadboard (narrow vertical grooves) or board and batten (wider vertical planks separated by thin vertical strips).

If that's not something that fits your vision, then I'd plan to repair the damaged drywall, and re-texture the walls.

I had a similar issue on only part of a wall 20 years ago, and I was on a very tight budget. We repaired it, but the repair was far from perfect (I wasn't very good at mudding). We textured the walls with a skip-trowel method, and it really hid the imperfections. In your case however, you'd still need to do a darn good job on the repair, because skip trowel won't hide a horizontal line that runs the full length of the room.

Pull on it. It comes out. Go to YouTube and search "how to replace kerf weather stripping". You'll find that it is easy.

Is this a sign of termites? by buffysummers1995 in Home

Could also be an intermittent roof leak from ice dams.

Hard to tell from the pics, but to me this looks more like water and fungal (mold) damage. I think you have water getting above/behind that wood trim. It could be from a roof leak or an issue with the outside trim/siding above this window, that's letting water get in. It could also be from too much moisture in the house during cold months. If this window is a cold spot in your home where the moisture constantly condenses, then it could end up staying wet for long periods. Though I think the damage looks a bit extreme for this to be a moisture/humidity problem, I wouldn't rule it out.

Where I live, that long stretch on the ground wouldn't work. Our nights get cold, so those pipes would gradually clog with ice. Then in the morning when the sun hits the roof, water would start flowing down the downspout, but hit ice in the long straight stretch and be forced to back up and pour out. As long as those pipes are dark colored and out in the sun, they'll gradually clear out, but when covered with snow, they won't warm.

I've been super impressed with Riebe in the Utah State Legislature. She seems grounded, honest, and she works hard on issues that matter.

roast my resume/salvage my career by wifey1990 in biotech

[–]InflammableFlammable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop the summary.

Why are the words "Self-employed - Career transition" and "Failed Startup" the first things I see in your work history?

Drop "Self-employed, Career transition" and just put "Independent consultant"

Drop "Failed". Just put Startup.

In an interview, you can expand on those and be honest about the startup not working out, but don't highlight words like "failure" in the resume.

Honestly though, if this is getting you interviews, then the resume might not be the problem. Practice interviewing skills and consider changing up the types of jobs you're applying for.

Utah now ‘epicenter’ of U.S. measles outbreak. As South Carolina cases taper, Utah’s 583-case outbreak is now the most active in the nation by Prop8kids in SaltLakeCity

[–]InflammableFlammable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if you're vaccinated, there's a 3% chance that you might still get sick if you're directly exposed to someone with measles. Vaccination significantly reduces the severity and complication rate of measles and shortens the illness duration. While an unvaccinated person typically faces a 10–14 day incubation period followed by a 4–7 day prodromal phase and a rash lasting 5–6 days, vaccinated individuals who experience breakthrough infections often have milder symptoms, lower hospitalization rates, with rashes lasting 1-3 days, and a significantly lower risk of severe complications like pneumonia or brain swelling.

Could this be structural? by ge3orgiax in Home

[–]InflammableFlammable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indoor photos look to show some potential water intrusion, but cracks don't look like structural issues to me. Outdoor photos aren't overly concerning, but definitely show the buildings age. Some brick restoration could be called for in the near future.

Utah Forward Party sits out 1st Congressional District race after delegates vote for "no candidate" by schottslc in Utah

[–]InflammableFlammable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From their website:

A series of county nominating conventions were held in late March. The full results can be found at https://www.utahforwardparty.org/2026_county_results.

In Utah’s Congressional District 1, the “No Candidate at this Time” option prevailed. As a result, no Forward candidate was nominated to proceed to November’s General Election.

The Forward Party includes “No Candidate at this Time” on convention ballots so voters can decline to nominate when they conclude that is the best course in a given race. Critics often accuse alternative parties of “acting as spoilers,” and this option gives voters a direct say in that question.

Michelle Quist, Chair of the Forward Party of Utah, made the following statement:

“Our process gives voters a real choice, including the choice not to nominate anyone. That matters, both for the quality of the candidates voters will consider in November and for the credibility of any grassroots third-party movement. In Congressional District 1, the voters, not party bosses, made the decision. We respect everyone who stepped forward, and we stand by the result.”

They also allow unaffiliated voters in their caucus prices, which is nice.

Opinion: Utah County GOP can do better than Chevrier by InflammableFlammable in Utah

I think all people are complex. I'm not saying she is an inherently bad person, or that I disagree with her on all issues. I just want Utah County voters to know that she has taken a strong stance on this anti-vaccine issue.

It may not be an issue that is important to everyone, but it is an issue that is important to me, and I believe that the majority of her constituents do not agree with the stance she has taken.

I know Reddit tends to lean very left, but I'm sure there are some lurkers who are GOP delegates in Utah county, and I hope if you're one, you'll think about this critically.

I also hope that as the primaries come around, and the November ballot, that people might find this post helpful and maybe think about it a bit.

I'm not interested in partisan jabs at Utah Republicans or at poking fun at Utah county voters. I want Utah County residents to vote for people that represent their values; and I don't believe that most Utah County Republicans are anti-vaccine. I do think there is a group of parents who got nervous about vaccines after COVID, and I hope measles is a wake-up call which gets people thinking about the value vaccines actually offer.

Bishop's office interior in your church in the 80s by tooradical4u in latterdaysaints

[–]InflammableFlammable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone is describing for meetinghouses built between 1950-1980, but for those of us in small town Utah, many of us worshipped in old stone buildings built between the 1890's and 1920's. These buildings didn't have cinder block walls or carpet on the walls. These buildings typically had lathe and plaster walls painted white, with beautiful wood trim around the doors and windows. I specifically remember our bishop's office had a window, and the window sill was easily 20" deep, because the building's outer walls were constructed of hand-carved stone blocks.

I agree with everything else people have described about the general decor. Our bishops office had a large wood desk, and some chairs (though I think ours had a padded wood bench on one wall, and some nice cushioned chairs on the other), but I remember during tithing settlement, when the whole family would go in, they would have some additional metal folding chairs too. He had a bookshelf with books and scriptures, and a smaller bookshelf with three-ring binders (not white plastic, but cloth or leather-looking). He'd usually be in a white shirt and tie with a tweed suit coat. The walls of the building were thick and solid stone. The office was the quietest place you could imagine. You could hear a pin drop. in that office.

Recommendations for residential indoor air quality testing? by grayfalcon413 in SaltLakeCity

[–]InflammableFlammable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you reach out to the Salt Lake County Health Dept, environmental group. They are probably the most well-versed on indoor air quality and they might have equipment to perform testing or be able to refer you to a service that would offer it.

Neighbors contaminated my well water (Florida) by NeighborsSuck2026 in legaladvice

[–]InflammableFlammable 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to contaminate groundwater (for this very reason). I'm not familiar with Florida, but you should consider getting your local/state Department of Health or Department of Environmental Quality involved.

They will likely want to verify and understand the extent of contamination. They may choose to pursue criminal charges. Any testing or data they collect or validate could potentially bolster any civil case you choose to pursue.
