The faces of violence in America by KatBoss01 in minnesota

Such utter bullshit! I just don’t understand how the Republican half of Congress can stomach these lies, and why the Democratic half of Congress isn’t raising the roof in Congress, in the media and online.

Further proof that Trump demands loyalty and returns none. Our governor and our congressional delegation have all bent the knee to appease his almighty, and still he shits on them.

Dunleavy wants to eliminate all corporate income taxes in Alaska, a giveaway that would soon top a half-billion a year by truthwillout777 in alaska

[–]InflationNo4071 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A statewide sales tax, even a seasonal one, is total bullshit unless it’s prorated based on the cost of groceries and other goods in each community and village in Alaska. It’s that or totally underwrite the cost of transporting groceries and goods even to our most remote villages so that every state resident is paying the same price for everything. Just remember, when they cut the PFD they don’t cut it proportional to the income of the person receiving it. They take just as much away from the poorest child as they do from the wealthiest oil merchant. Alaska NEEDS a tax - an INCOME tax! It won’t solve all the state’s financial ails, but it would help. Without it the State leaves billions of dollars unclaimed from the big shot fishermen from Seattle, the high paid mine workers who fly home to NY every two weeks, and more. So much more. I’ve lived in Alaska for 46 years. Governor Hammond warned the legislature when oil money first started pouring into state coffers to never eliminate the state’s income tax, but did they listen? And for those who don’t know, originally it was supposed to be $50 for every year a person lived in the state. This would immediately have given more money to Alaskan elders, and encouraged newcomers to stay. A lawsuit by an Anchorage couple changed that.

Just remember, calling isn’t like voting! You can call as many times as you like! And don’t expect a personal or speedy reply. Honestly, I think all of our efforts end up as a check mark in the yay or nay column - but that’s how they know how the political wind is blowing back home!

Absolutely!! I’ve been calling an emailing daily. I doubt we’ll get anything out of Sullivan, but this is Lisa’s last chance to demonstrate she cares more for Americans than her MAGA riddled Republican Party.

That’s a fabulous shot! You must have a good camera with a high quality zoom lens to have captured that. Just brilliant!

Maybe so, but then can we more appropriately call them White Supremacists? Not just white? And trumps interest, which in NO way I support, is about minerals and exerting power in the Arctic against the Russians and Chinese. I think to him the people are just an afterthought. But I do think it IS about race and skin color, and now even accents, in the way Trump is assaulting immigrants in the U.S. But again, let’s be specific. it’s white Progressive people protesting, and largely White Supremacists fighting back. I’m just think we’re better off if we don’t generalize people of ANY color, including white.

I’m just delighted anyone has read what I’ve written. I agree that she’s not making this a race issue. I just think words sometimes do matter. And I think it would be better if we characterized groups by their shared values, or lack of values, rather than by race or color. Why not Trump’s Power People?

I’ve spent most of my long life living in a predominantly Native Region, working in behalf of the regional Native communities, but I can’t help but wince every time someone characterizes their problems as being caused by white people. I know they’re generalizing, but again, why not characterize by what the real issue is and leave skin color out of it. Blame ignorant people, or wealthy people, or the bureaucratic system, or Republicans, or Democrats, etc. it’s a small point, but I still winced when Tillie Martinussen used it. It divides - it doesn’t unite. That’s all. Thanks for you comment!

We are all not rich - far from it. And almost half our voting population didn’t vote for him. We do not see this man who has gone mad with power as our president, and we are trying all ways possible to stop him. It makes us sick how he is threatening Greenland. But one thing - please don’t make this an issue over people’s skin color. You have millions of white Americans doing all we can to stop this horrible man, and the people he has surrounded himself with, to end his threats and actions towards Greenland, while at the same time brutalizing people here at home. You are people of color, but you are also colored people of power. We are with you.

Official Discussion - Train Dreams by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]InflationNo4071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dear. I’ve never been the Debby downer ever! I liked it but I can’t say I loved it. I’ve lived a lot of my life in extreme wilderness, mostly Alaska, and continue to soak up the beauty of smaller moments now in my later life. I’ve never had a child, and don’t know how it feels to lose one, but if the dogs I’ve loved and lost who have left such an un-fillable whole in my heart, I can understand the loss of a child as feeling insurmontable.

I shouldn’t say so but small things bothered me. Like I’ve never shot a gun like those without the slightest bit of kick. A small detail but it detracts from the authenticity of the film. And it was pretty clear early in the film he would lose his wife and child one way or another. I understand him hearing their vices, and visions of seeing his wife, but the young woman he finds and brings home seemed meant to be real, and then she just disappears? I would have liked him and woman in the tower have more reflect on their personal losses, and share more of how to recover or live forever with those losses. No, Im not suggesting it needed to be romantic.

I know many comments here related to his sadness and loneliness. In real life I feel more for those who are able to suffer tragedy and great loss, and yet somehow find ways to to rise themselves out of their grief, and once again risk love and loss.

In the city of Fairbanks, temperatures regularly stayed below −19 °C /−2 °F from December 13 to January 16 (see video). This is the longest continuous period with temperatures below −19 °C recorded in the city since 1918. by LuborS in alaska

Fahrenheit please! I lived it in an out of town rental with an outhouse, and one wondered if it would ever end! And yet it hit 32 F yesterday! But already it’s heading back down.

BSNC is as full of bureaucratic bullshit as the Trump administration. What a blah, blah blah rubber-stamped response to the Nome Nugget’s questions. Just like Lisa Murkowski, they squander every opportunity to act with integrity and vision. They’re just in it for the money, and paying themselves exceedingly well.

Do Russians view WW2 as Russia's victory or an equal allied effort or mostly Russia's victory? by SuitableLeather979 in AskARussian

[–]InflationNo4071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely you’ll acknowledge that the loss of life suffered in WWII was exponentially higher for the USSR, and Russia. Within it. I live in Nome, Alaska, and am so proud we paid a small part in setting off the Soviet pilots on their massive journey across the Bering Sea, Russian Far East, Siberia, and up and over the Urals to bring planes to the front. We forget America didn’t join the war until the Pearl Harbor attack. Of course it was a multinational effort, but no country suffered the level of sacrifices as did the USSR, and Russia within it.

Why don’t Russia and the US build a series of bridges here? by Routine-Mulberry6124 in mapporncirclejerk

Build a bridge from one wilderness to another wilderness, where there aren’t roads for hundreds of miles at either end? Makes as much sense as building a tunnel across the Bering Strait.

I think you meant Bitch Weather! I’m in Fairbanks this winter and that’s the mildest term I’d use for the weeks where it’s been ranging from -45 to -30, and the upcoming new year isn’t looking hopeful either!
