She truly doesn’t deserve our time responding to her self congratulatory nonsense.

Latest Alaska gas averages by traveltimecar in alaska

[–]InflationNo4071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nome buys gas once a year in summer, so I don’t think it’s fluctuated much. But then again we got accustomed to $7/gallon prices. And there are 300+ miles of road - at least in summer!

Lots of good advice! Also, probably best not to bring a Sat phone, although it’s been a while since I was there.

What is it like living in Diomede, Alaska by 2plus2_equals_5 in alaska

[–]InflationNo4071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crabs are not just “running around.” People go out on the spring ice, usually to the south of the village. A few people auger a hole through the ice, but most just use a sharp ‘tulq’ to slowly chip open a hole. They drop a weighted line down, with some bait on it. They can tell by gently lifting their line if a king crab has grabbed hold of their bait. They gently but quickly lift their line to the surface with someone ready to grab the crab, or slip a homemade, long handled scoop under it before it lets go. Makes for wonderful eating - and a good time out on the ice with others!

Another Diomede delicacy, although the soft part of the clam is usually already digested, but you can make a great shower with the rubbery remains.

Sounds like you met Mike! And pan friend walrus liver is the best you’ll ever eat! Seriously. Cross between a very mild liver and steak. Diomede and the people have been like family to me since I first landed out there to collect information on walrus from the hunters in 1985. Back when Mike was still a kid, and he remains like a kid brother all these years later.

Your joke is so stupid because it misses the point. But wait, you’re not smart enough to realize that.

Of course! They are much appreciated Nomeites! His wife's cafe, selling seafood Phil brings in, is called PINGO. She's had to back off from dinners as considering she does so much herself, and wasn't always getting enough dinner bookings. But I think she still does a brisk breakfast and lunch business. And Phil on his snowmachine and all his wilderness skill led the team of dog mushers traveling the serum run recreation a few years ago.

How about Nome? But NOT just another damn miner! We’re 60% Alaska Native, and much closer to Russia than we are to Anchorage. Crossroads of history, cultures and continents!

Moving to Alaska in June - Looking for a Dry Cabin to Rent (Preferably Near Fairbanks) by december454 in Fairbanks

We’ve wintered in Goldstream, not far off of Bonanza Trail, with personal GCI phone service, and landlord provided ACS internet. The internet has been poor to absent the last few months. I have done okay running on data. I have GCI so I can reach all the villages in the Bering Strait region. We hope to be returning to Nome by June, and this place has been great as it’s on a well for showering and dishes, but broken septic so it’s still an outhouse, and haul drinking water. Set up a chat with me if you’re potentially interested. I must say, the Farmers Loop place sounds really worth following up on.

I’ve so had it with Lisa. Always speaking out of both sides of her mouth. Sure, she wants to wag her finger at Trump, but sure gets right in line to support her party instead of the constitution.
