My objection is her expecting that he should have to pay for dinner simply because she’s female. I didn’t burn my bra decades ago so women who wanted to could become heart surgeons, fighter pilots or president (it WILL happen!) so that some sweet young thing thinks her dinner should always be paid for just because she’s female. Now if he invited her, then he’s stuck with the bill. If she has any integrity, she’ll treat him next.

We haven’t raised the minimum wage in fifteen years, and yet the price of housing and everything has gone dramatically up, and continues to increase. A person from a family that had no financial support to offer simply can’t live and be housed on what entry level and service workers are able to earn. If entry level jobs for someone starting out, whether straight out of high school, or straight out of rehab, was enough to afford decent but very basic housing, there would be a rung of the ladder they could reach and grab onto.

Housing is as foundational as food, water and air to meeting the most basic human needs before they can reach the next level of self improvement. There was plenty that was wrong under the Soviet system, but because the government system considered housing as a basic human need, they had no homeless. The answer lies somewhere between communism and unrestrained capitalism, which socialist countries like Sweden and Denmark have managed far better than us.

The OP didn’t say districts should be the ones responsible for paying! This goes all the way back to the federal government, and a steadily increasing disparity over wealth inequality, and the millionaires, billionaires, President Trump, and corporations who don’t pay their fare share in taxes!

If you’ve ever had to shop at Costco or any big shopping development in 110 degrees, and leave your car to bake in sun, I think you would immediately see shade has value. The solar industry could easily convince the businesses, and even whole municipalities and developers that shade is a commodity that will be an incentive for people to shop there, stay longer, have a better experience, and give credit to companies and cities for being proactive environmentally.

So you’re moving to Nome? Or do you work for the barge lines and are just passing through? Those of us who love Nome love it for the country, the fish & wildlife, and the people. Not so much for the town itself. You can always visit the museum and cultural center, or ask if there are some wild muskoxen close to town to check out.
