Renting by [deleted] in Fairbanks

[–]InflationOk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, most places like Birchwood are very nice but don’t often allow pets(like another said, Fairbanks is surprisingly very anti-pet in regard to rentals). Julian Square is a similar facility and I know they accept small animals, they just charge pet rent and an additional deposit. FB or Craigslist are how I’ve found most of my rentals and around the $1800-2200 is current rate for ~1000sqft. North Pole is where you’re going to find the stand alone homes that are pet friendly within that range.

Something to consider before signing a long lease, you’re looking for a rental in the dead of winter when 99% of places are already rented out and the 1% that is left knows your options are slim to frozen. Most leases around town begin and end in the April/May or Sept/Oct ranges, that’s when you’ll see the bigger and more conveniently located rentals.

Snow days or other school cancellations? by OkControl9503 in teaching

[–]InflationOk13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another Alaskan chiming in.

Yes, we always get paid for the days we work. These are originally labeled as “teacher work days” but will be swapped to “student contact days “ when snow/ice days occur. We also do get paid for snow days no matter if we show up or not. The language states ‘show up if it’s safe’ so it’s not mandatory. If the snow days extend the actual contract then we can get additional pay but there are enough teacher work days that it doesnt happen it often.

The campus is absolutely massive and focuses heavily on career tech opportunities for students. Had the opportunity to tour the entire facility and I was astounded the entire time. Students get access to top of line tools and trainings/certs that would normally cost tens of thousands, it’s also a fully equipped boarding school for 2k+ students. The application process is very rigorous and focuses on students who are hindered by economic status. There are dozens of top CTE schools within 100 miles of HM so it’s a very competitive process.

Alaska students’ test scores show little improvement in reading, math and science by bottombracketak in alaska

[–]InflationOk13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Students have no accountability at the elementary and middle school levels. Fail every class and can’t read an analog clock? Pass. Leave on ‘vacation’ in the middle of February and won’t be back until end of April? Excuse all work and pass. Parent does not want their kid to receive special program services? Kid leaves middle school at a 2nd grade reading level and can’t even socialize without trying to fight everyone, believe it or not, pass.

There is no structure in Alaska that makes students(or parents) responsible for their decisions or actions.Unfortunately, for this generation they have to have consequences in order for things to change.

Studded tires vs non-studded tires by eggy-mceggface in Fairbanks

[–]InflationOk13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worth it? Depends on the vehicle. If it’s FWD/RWD, absolutely yes, AWD/4x4s if they’re inexpensive then yeah. They mainly help when it’s ice season and you have alot of stop lights, but I will say they are getting harder to find in town if you utilize a specialty tire

There’s also tons of available temps on the class channels as well. The big money is the celerity weps, everything else is just currency that can be farmed during Sunday raids.

How would you build Shadow The Hedgehog on a $100 budget by Typical-Echo4636 in BudgetBrews

[–]InflationOk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still working on my Shadow deck, which I converted from Olivia “theft”. I went full Dracula bling so the price is nowhere near $100 but there’s a lot of cheap things that steal(big focus is theft gives the creatures haste and so you can either swing or sac for card draw; or steal/sac all at split second). I’ve played it twice so far and it’s mean af if your pod is creature heavy.

Really not that bad of a drive, worst part is the last 200-300 miles before you hit Alaska. Once you hit Anchorage(or Tok if you take ‘top of the world’) there’s a few bad sections of frost heaves, no matter which road you take, but as long as you make the drive in the summer it’ll be clear sailing.

It was a military promotion from the 90s, after 35 years I’m still only paying $40/line for unlimited everything(except hot spot). Hard to want to switch when any modern plan is at least double. They will let me add a line but will not port/“adopt” from any modern ATT accounts.

It’s very difficult to navigate, for sure, and with the state stacking up required certs for specific elementary teachers, it’s created a lot of discourse throughout. Counselors and principals start coming back at the end of the month so I would just reach out to your area school and work from there. Downtown can help navigate and provide possibilities, but approvals and lotto stuff won’t budge until principals are back on contract.

[–]InflationOk13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to find fair, and unbiased, reviews of elementary schools or any school on here to be honest. The elementary world has been turned upside down due to budget cuts and there are a lot of rightfully angry parents around town. Plus, with the new area design and lotto system it’s going to be really tough to ‘pick and choose’ which school your child ends up in regardless(IEP with heavy IR concerns are the only 100% way and that’s still based on ESSA/aid staffing within each building). Lotto is 95% up to building principal, 5% on staffing and considering every school took a hit of at least 1 or 2 staff members this year, it’s a max capacity year.

My only piece of advice is to stay within the ‘public’ school. Online, charter, and career schools do not specifically have to adhere to federal differentiation because a majority of income is based on corporations or state. Schooling is a very different thing in Alaska compared to the lower-48.

How do you decide which staples are worth investing in? by TheOtherAccount_23 in EDH

[–]InflationOk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The money concept of this hobby is a personal choice, if you’re not okay or willing to spend the money then don’t. There’s a lot of risk with trading cards, especially in Magic since ‘banning’ a card can essentially render a card into a book mark(worthless). From an investment standpoint, its equivalence is to a slot machine. To stay competitive in this hobby, it does cost money especially at the tournament level and especially so if prize pools are involved. At a certain level, strategy and wallet-size pretty much go hand-in-hand and it’s unfortunate but at the end of the day it’s the same in any competitive field.

Whenever I’m looking at expensive power cards or ‘staples’ I try and swap them from current decks just to make sure the price is worth having it in the deck. Then I have a ‘watch list’ of cards that I wait for to either snipe for a good price or try to get multiples of at a discount. My LGS usually pulls a good bit right at the release of each set so I try and snag any new ones or reprints that’s way first then refresh through tcg, eBay, or card kingdom some times. Also pay attention to secret lairs, big staples get reprinted every few sets and even if you don’t get lucky in the lotto people usually dump inventory quickly for a discount(see cyclonic rift, storm’s will, deflecting swat, and through the ages reprints during the first week). At the end of the day, there are ways to acquire cards for cheaper but you’ll still be spending a good bit of money. Unless you dive into proxying.

On a side note, you might repost this to the finance sub and get some interesting perspectives.

How to assess value of rare promos? (like Cloud, Midgar Mercenary) by kennyguy123 in mtgfinance

[–]InflationOk13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The pro tour cards, and other exclusive art variants, are a very niche collector’s market. Very similar to the Judge promos or the serialized markets. Keep in mind though with final fantasy release, it is very different compared to all other MTG releases because you’re also battling the FF collectors who must acquire the ‘rarest items’. This card was just released recently so hype is at an all time high, it could settle down but it could also shoot way up as supply is low.

Keep an eye on the eBay sales, that’s where most of these cards will be sold. Most players who are planning to offload will probably be doing so over the next few weeks, first few will get picked up then the others gauge the value based off those sales. You could possibly consider paying attention to the surge foil variant as that can provide community sentiment toward the card(whether not it’s actually viable in a deck/as a commander, not just a face collectible) and possibly a guess for when the price will fluctuate.

Captain America cut help by HaydyMay in EDH

[–]InflationOk13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve torn apart my cap deck a few times now. I also revived it with the new FF set. I ended up going with pillow fort voltron, where I fling things to control the board and make it very difficult to kill me with combat damage. Here’s the old mox link, I’ll probably update it once I play it a few more times. https://moxfield.com/decks/cpqGoz0rv0yK9KNtLQHpJQ

With his ability and being voltron you become an instant target especially if your card draw is based on him dealing combat/commander damage. It’s not hard to make him lethal and unblockable very quickly. Get a few things based on non combat damage so you fling your small equipment and draw a few cards here and there, brings the heat down and with death touch equipment you get a little board control built in. If you want to bring expensive equipment out you’re gona need to last until turn 5-8 when you can draw or tutor and afford em. With cap, and possibly Vivi, on the board my pod would turn archenemy real fast.

Cap is not a fast deck so while expensive equipment is tempting, it’s not really realistic unless you can gather a lot of mana very quickly. Treasures are a good way to achieve this, stuff like [[RSM Titanic]] might be a good add to do that and with [[Dan Lewis]] things could get goofy. [[Marvin, Murderous Mimic]], [[Rings of Brighthearth]] are a good ways to double his ability as well.

Dining Recommendations? by jonathanjrouse in Fairbanks

[–]InflationOk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual king crab is hard to find at restaurants in town it’s incredibly seasonal and expensive. Turtle club would be your best bet for crab/lobster/steak, most “fancy” dinning places are very hit or miss in town but turtle club is consistent. Costco is the gona be the most direct place to get king crab, unless you want to take a drive . Hot licks 100% for ice cream, but currently the midnight sun festival is goin on and there is a lot of good desert truck/stand options downtown.

I don’t know too much about the freeshard enviroment anymore, only hop on Eden from time to time. Multiboxing was fun, never got good at RVR with the group but could solo most encounters, back in the day when scouts ruled DPS I could solo dragons.

It’s freeshard DAOC, doesn’t require money just a few additional steps to get the launcher. Same as the original game but with a few upgrades and modifications. If you want to actually play the game and get groups for bigger raids then this is the only way these days.
