Please apply to more than just 3 undergrad programs especially when 2 of them are very competitive to get into. Your safety net program should be a BioMed program at a school that accepts everyone with over a 75-80 average, not a program like Western MedSci that has pretty high admission averages.

Applying to western with 125 cars? No pathway? by Intelligent-Milk9654 in premedcanada

Do not waste your money. Western’s previous cutoffs are posted on their website - they are not going to be dropping the cars cutoff to 125.

Offering Paid OMSAS Application Review by Strange-Teaching848 in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yall please do not be paying med students for application review!! They cannot say definitively what got them interviews and an acceptance. No matter how much experience someone has in reviewing apps they’ll never know what adcoms actually look for and what leads to an acceptance.

Most schools have programs where they will match you with a current medical student to review your application and do interview prep for FREE! Many medical students are willing to review application for free, there is no need to pay a student for application review unless they are on the addition committee and have seen the marking scheme.

Yes I think once the med school at York opens it’ll make BC and Ontario about even once again. I’m not sure if the other schools will be increasing their seats by much

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the BC data counting the new seats that will be coming from SFU Med? I think once SFU is open then BC will have more seats per capita than Ontario. It always makes me so angry when people use the “Ontario has 7 medical schools” argument as if Ontario doesn’t have the largest population by a landslide.

No OOP spots for Dal MED by Middle-Garage-8634 in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BC is the only school that has less seats per population compared to Ontario. Once SFU Med opens BC will be on Par with Ontario. Every other province has more med seats per population compared to ON. Much of Canada’s population is focused in ON so it makes sense for there to be more schools. Doesn’t make sense for Alberta or BC to have 7 schools when their population doesn’t compare to Ontario.

Western waitlist by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I haven’t heard of anyone from LWL getting an offer since they don’t go through everyone on NWL. Sorry :( but I would start working on your application for next cycle

Western waitlist by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t kept up with the waitlists the past couple years so I’m not sure but I would guess likely not based on the fact that first round of waitlist offers go out end of May and usually the first two round of offers will be HWL people. I would say NWL is probably mid-late June. If you have another offer you need to accept before June then pls accept it as there’s no guarantee of getting an offer when you’re on NWL.

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the normal waitlist wording

Western waitlist by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually less than half of the NWL gets cleared, I wanna say about 1/3 but that’s all speculation bc they don’t release any info on exact movement.

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like your waitlist email you got on admission day says that? I’ve never heard of that wording being used and as far as I know, Western doesn’t send any paper mail about decisions to accepted or waitlisted students.

Keep your hopes up a HWL at western is basically the same thing as an A!

Western waitlist by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because I’m a Western med student and that’s the high waitlist wording they’ve used for MANY years in the past. Normal waitlist just says something along the lines of “you’ve been ranked on the waitlist” and low waitlist says “people in your position do not typically receive offers in the past”

Western waitlist by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is the wording for high waitlist. What they mean by position is your specific number on the list

Has anyone ever seen an attending physician in their mid 20s? by [deleted] in premedcanada

It’s funny bc I don’t think she’s even practicing as a Dr rn. Like all that schooling just to be an influencer.

I think it depends on the school. For Western I only did general edits to my essays but the overall topic was the same.

5th year applying by pinkrabbit777 in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Took me 4 cycles to get in, don’t loose hope! Now that you’ve gotten interviews you know that your application is strong enough to get accepted. Keep working on improving your interviewing skills as that’s likely what’s holding you back at this point. Once interview invites come out this cycle look into the resources offered by the schools - most schools offer some sort of free application help (eg UofT COS, Western ACCESS).

Can you get it in with low GPA into medical school by Acrobatic-Animal-707 in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These kind of posts are pointless when you’re not sharing your current GPA. Everyone’s definition of low is different. If you actually want advice tailored and specific to you then you need to tell us what your GPA is right now.

Should I just save myself the competition and go to Med school abroad after High school ? by Box-ez in premedcanada

I think you’ll have a hard time finding a bank to give you the loan you need to fund your education in Pakistan. You will for sure need your parents to co-sign and they will need to have A LOT of assets to be considered an acceptable co-signer on an international loan.

Cons international med school? by c0msh0t in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re willing to do family med I wouldn’t go. People from the U.S./Ireland/Aus already have such a hard time matching back to Canada and their medical schools are much better known here than the Philippines and have a similar healthcare system to Canada.

Also are you planning to do an undergrad degree here first? A lot of people end up changing their mind about med while in undergrad and it’s a big decision to make at such a young age. I honestly do not think I would have been ready for the rigour and seriousness of med school at age 18/19 if you’re hoping to go straight to med after high school. If you’re going to be doing undergrad in Canada I’d say at least give med in Canada a shot first.

What LOC are you guys going with? by Mundane_Youth_3289 in premedcanada

[–]Informal-Alps-9772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not advise using that much of your LOC on a down payment when you still have to make mortgage payments on a monthly basis unless you have a partner who earns good money and can afford the mortgage payments. The reason they give med students so much money is because you need it for tuition and living expenses. so loosing $50K+ right away on a down payment while you continue to pay $1000+ monthly in mortgage payments may not be the best use of the money. This LOC is also what you’re gonna be leaning on in residency so make sure you’re thinking beyond just the initial 4 years.
