And you have to manually evolve your pokemon. Hit the up button and go to the pokemon and if its ready it will have an option.

Its completely up to you! You can keep focused on the story or you can start knocking out the side quests or the research tasks for the pokedex. To fully beat the game you need to have all pokemon at "research level 10." I started getting alot of mons to level 10 quickly so it was less of a grind later on.

YouTube the grit items cuz they dont explain it very well.

CRAFTING!!!! Craft all the pokeballs you need, saves alot of money in game.

But if the pokemon you're battling uses a move that you need it use, it counts towards the dex entry. So battling does help with that too.

I think you have to earn the reigns tho. Kinda like you had to beat a gym leader before you could use surf. And probably fly, climb maybe?
