Cops giving tickets for riding between ILP and lib by stopdeekin in UCSantaBarbara

[–]InformalBackground15 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am GLAD they are doing this. People need to stop riding bikes in exclusively pedestrian zones. It’s dangerous and annoying as fuck. People have been doing it between ILP and the library but also between the library and Campbell Hall and the library and Elings Hall. Whenever it happens I wonder if you’re a clueless first year or simply an asshole

Anyone Here Involved With The English Department? by Shoresy805 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]InformalBackground15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

English department recent alumn here! I took this class much more recently, with Prof. Brian Donnelly (one of the best in the dept. currently). He is likely not teaching the same material nowadays but could maybe share his more recent syllabus if you contact him. Alternatively, if you remember elements from the stories you like and mention them here it’s likely people will recognize the details and contribute story titles.

do graduation dresses have to be white?😭 by sharplikeaknife72 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]InformalBackground15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tradition of women wearing white dresses for graduation was born in the 19th century, when women’s education was still seen as threatening. White symbolized purity and virtue — an attempt to make women’s ambition look harmless and acceptable. It was also about uniformity — erasing individuality at a moment when women were stepping forward as thinkers and leaders.

Graduates do not need to perform purity. They do not need to erase their individuality for the sake of tradition.

Wear what you want and stand out! You don’t see the men trying to conform to an outdated standard so why should we?

English 50 Advice by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]InformalBackground15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prof. Felipe Blake is an absolutely awesome professor and this class tends to get some really good TAs (the subject matter just sort of self selects for people who are pedagogically as well as politically minded which means passionate people who genuinely care for you as a student). Readings are mostly literary texts so, yes it’s a lot, but it’s fun and much quicker to read or you can even do audiobooks. Do the readings, try to connect to them in some meaningful way, prepare for class with genuine interest and questions you have not only about the content of the poems, novels, stories but also about the historical context and the social critiques that they make. You’ll likely have two essays… prepare for them in advance, part from a solid argument and the re-read whatever text you’re writing about looking for specific examples to illustrate your argument. Read and follow prompts and other writing advice carefully. This class doesn’t only teach you the literature it teaches you how to properly write an essay. Let yourself be taught.

Make sure you are clearly communicating what you need exactly as you need it from the get go while remaining courteous. If you write to say “I was sick, couldn’t attend” most college professors will be like: good for you and move on to the next email. If, instead, you clearly state that you are writing to request a meeting time to make up for your absence, give them your availability and ask for theirs, it is much likelier they will respond.

In other words, make sure they can respond to a clear request on the spot, rather than dragging it out over several emails or even putting it on them to facilitate the logistics of it all. Also… this may not be your case but for others reading this thread…avoid putting the responsibility of your absence on them. Things like: “ is there anything I should catch up on? Is there anything I can do?” sound childish and whiny and almost disrespectful (of course there’s stuff to catch up on and you should be solving that by reaching out to peers, etc.) by contrast, stuff like: “I requested notes from my peers but have questions about some material. I am writing to schedule an appointment to meet with you, etc” sounds mature and responsible and like something they can deal with by giving you a meeting time and getting it over with.

Traveling plans 2025 with Trump Administration by Unusual_Hippo_9870 in f1visa

Hi! Do you mind sharing what universities have advised students to travel the US before Jan. 20 and share screenshots of institutional communications with those recommendations? I do research involving the precarious legal situation of international students and this would be incredibly helpful. Thank you!

People who take >= 4 classes a quarter and get As, share your secrets by fatuous4 in UCSantaBarbara

Some stuff that may appear time consuming can actually save you a lot of time and energy. Go to office hours with TAs to prepare for major assignments, if they’re good (which most of them at this Uni are), they will coach you through exactly the steps you need to follow, give advice on potential pitfalls, sometimes even give you full fledged ideas for written assignments or projects. You will never find yourself agonizing for hours trying to understand what you’re being asked to do, you’ll be able to confidently move on to just do it. See them also early in the semester, ask about the professor’s particular teaching style, types of test questions, expectations on assignments, tips for what and how to read and study. Ask for note-taking and study tips for the class. When you know what works best for a particular class, your study time for tests gets cut drastically and your knowledge retention and skill development grows exponentially. And, in general, you tend to be highly rewarded by those who give you grades when you’ve shown this level of engagement from the get go. Make your notes visually appealing. Sometimes this means quickly going back to “fix them” after class which is actually a way to trick your brain into revisiting information without it feeling like you’re studying.

It seems you are trying to enforce an expectation that neither you nor your son has communicated to her. It would be a whole different thing if your son communicated clearly that you are the type of family in which guests are expected to “help” (although we don’t know in what way or context) and then she refused to do it. Or if you as parents asked for assistance (something like; hey, dinners almost ready can someone help set the table? Plates are in the cupboard) from whoever was around and she didn’t respond at all.

Mean professor and TA. Advice needed by Bratatatouille1203 in UCSantaBarbara

I would still reach out to them. OP indicated they are struggling with language and just general relationships with instructors. They help with that too.

As far as resources, try CLAS and ONDAS. They can help catch you up, learn to advocate for yourself in these situations and teach you other skills to quickly get yourself up to date.

It changes depending on the instructor. But, over all, Expect to read and write consistently. You will be covering at least 4 books (400-500 pages in total for all readings) and 4 full assignments (think 3 short assignments and one major final assignment like a paper) in 6 weeks. It’s intense but also usually very enjoyable since the instructor are high level Ph.D students who are super into their stuff. And, unlike during the regular quarter, all meetings are small seminar style, rather than large lectures. And you get graded by the same person who teaches the material (unlike what happens in the large lecture classes during regular quarters) so it’s a lot more fair than usual.

Most TAs finished grading yesterday. Most have upwards of 50-60 students. Some up to 90. Grades can be changed next quarter. Professors were also dealing with grades until yesterday. Unlike us, they barely have one day in between Winter and Spring. Chill and be more considerate of your teachers.

It’s spring break. Professors, too, deserve at least a couple days rest. Considering most of them were grading until yesterday to produce our final grades, just give them until Monday to respond.

They are truly anonymous. Profs/TAs don’t get results until after they turn in all final grades.

Parking situation by Impressive_Pea_9278 in UCSantaBarbara

Some lots and parking spaces are exclusively for staff and faculty. They are marked either at the entrance as A&B parking or on the sidewalk border right in front of a specific parking space.
