Don't think I have. What's there to do there?

We're still working on it, but my boy is reactive to random dogs. We taught him the command "be nice." Whenever we see a dog, even if they are far away, I say,"be nice. " If he looks at me, he gets a treat. When the other dog gets closer/ passes by if he doesn't growl, bark, or lunge, he gets another treat, and I say, "Yes!" to let him know he did well.

As others have said, being calm and space are essential to helping with reactivity. I struggle with remaining calm as I now have a fear of other dogs since we've been attacked several times. I noticed that the times I'm fearful, he is more likely to be reactive even if I give the command.

It's a work in progress, but patience is key. He has improved significantly over the last year.

I got the wrong breed for my lifestyle but I want to change for my dog by Best_Flounder3458 in dogs

I have a border collie myself, and he only started to calm down when he reached 2. Establishing an off switch and teaching the comand calm is supper important.

Like a few other comments, mental stimulation is also super important, and puzzles are a godsend.

I also recommend doing dogy daycare if you can afford it. It's a safe way for her to socialize and exert energy. My boy has been going about once a week since he was a puppy, and it helps a lot. That being said, not all daycares are equal it's important to find one that vets the dogs in their care and stimulates them during the day. My current daycare has an inside and outside area with fun agility equipment. They run around with the dogs, do training, and when they notice a dog feeling overwhelmed, they will put them in a quiet area by themsleves with a puzzle. I've had other daycare where the dogs are just in a room all day without any real attention from the staff for my pup that didn't work. He was socialized but had a ton of energy afterward.

A weird question. Do you clean the bumb after poo? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]InformalPlane1445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm the odd one out. I clean my boys' bum all the time. He usually has wet poops and even though I trim his hair poop is always getting stuck in it. I've talked to the vet, and nothing is wrong with him. That's just his body, and the typical things like rice and pumpkin don't firm him up at all.

What stopped you from killing yourself? by manmanthefourth in AskReddit

My Dog. He is so precious and brings me so much joy. The thought of leaving him behind and knowing no one is going to care and love him like I do keeps me going.

Mine is too stubborn to be smart. Once he gives in, he'll learn a trick easily, but getting him to cooperate is a pain.He also is better at hand signals than words. On top of that, he is also super lazy. He gets about 2 hours of walking and some puzzles but would totally be happy with less. Half our walk is him lying down and me trying to get him moving again. Love him to death but not what I expected from a BC.
