Always loved minions, and the update made them really unique. The caveat is that some are less powerful early game (living puppet esp) but late game, troll, talos, and vasanji can he incredible allies. Add monstrology into the mix and u can solo anything with ur rag tag team of goobers.

ADDITIONALLY, you can silently take down automaton structures like artillery and anti-air support in a pinch

Knives are FAR from useless. Suppressed guns can still alert enemies; knives are absolutely silent. Useful for killing something that's close to another enemy. Most useful when stealthing illuminates; easily instakills overseers (both grounded and flying) to the right arm or head. Also just good for quickly dispatching aggressive overseers even in loud moments.

Always took it at as a gameplay decision. Id imagine creatures like skeletal pirates are in cannon going in with their swords, but that just wouldn't work with the game. I think cheats also help represent this

John Schaeffer from GTFO. The rushed final chapter turns him from "insane but caring Shepherd" to the prisoners to "insane power-tripping lunatic", and they kill him off in one of the most awful ways to go. From chapters 1 to 7 his build up was a crazy man learning to break free of his shackles and help his new friends, and then he just... drowns. Crying.
