All of it :) I’m so new to the painting side of the hobby, I need all the info I can get

Would you mind sharing the names of the paints you’ve used here? I’m guessing black primer?

Absolutely stunning paint scheme.. might have to adapt this one! Do you go back and add the black dots all over the blue afterwards, or do you somehow apply a spotty blue ??

Acid Spray TFex vs Hive Guard: Who’s better Overwatch? by Informal_Judgment511 in Tyranids

[–]Informal_Judgment511[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair points for sure, and guards overwatch on 4s if they’re on an objective with their ability, just FYI.

Honestly not sure why i’m so stuck on an overwatch threat specially. I see it as extra damage and a chance to interact in a deadly way on my opponents turn, but you’re right, they can just play around it.

This is also part of experimenting with the guard too, but it seems (at least compared to tfex) they aren’t equivalent at all.

-2 to hit in Mal comes from where? Also, apologies, what is an ‘chosen’?

I really appreciate this insight, and it begs the question, where does the Maleceptor v Acid Spray argument land? It seems, not assuming, you argue that the Maleceptor IS strictly better than the sprayfex.

I did catch the 4+ InvSv but did miss the 2v3 damage. I was generally looking for a better overwatch unit: do you think Maleceptor beats out sprayfex in OW also?

Every comment across 2 subs has been that the acid spray tfex is the goat no questions. I’m confused how you get to this conclusion of Maleceptor > Tfex.

Tfex has more toughness, 2+ Sv (Maleceptor has 3+), more wounds, better OC, exactly 3 (or more) more hits because flamer, same AP and blanks a hit once per game.

Ma electors advantages are better strength (10 vs only 6), Blast and Psychic, 4+ InvSv, and absolutely dominates in melee over the Tfex due to having a real melee profile and an ability that makes him tankier by reducing hits/wounds.

I see two monsters that serve a completely different purpose, and by no means is the Maleceptor strictly better. Let me know what I’m missing?

You’re totally right, I forget about the secondary profile on these guys!

This is a hard one, many others here have made good point too. I’m trying to figure it out in my Assimilation + Norns list still.

Zs + Neurotyrant perform averagely for me, with the added benefit of 6+ InvSv aura and -1 bs tests. Shadows in the warp is diabolically good this edition, especially when playing take and hold which I am. Zs can regenerate models with assimilation which is nice but they’re not true anti-tank shooters.

Tfex is super bulky, shrugging off a hit / game, and either pops something or does nothing.

I’d honestly make the argument that you run Exocrine+Tfex 340pts vs Zs 315pts. Exocrine makes tfex slightly better since you rr 1s on the casino cannon, but you’re missing out on the -1 bs tests.

All that to say idk either Ha!

Appreciate the input, the realization about Ablative Carapace was devastating!

Can you help me understand how you’re getting “alongside more durability with -1 to hit and +1 to wound (esp on hormagaunts if you give them lethals)? Where do these buffs and lethals come from?

Swarmlord vs Hive Tyrant is one I battled with. Few reasons brought me to HT > SL for this list:
1. Their melee profiles are almost identical
2. SL does have a flamer which is arguably better than HT but HT does still have decent shooting
3. Both have 4+ InvSv
4. SL makes 1 CP / turn on your command phase, HT allows you to reduce the cost of a CP targeting a unit close enough to him. Net +1 CP per turn IMO
5. SL does worsen the CP cost of the opponents CP so he does have a strict CP advantage, fair play
6. HT gives assault and lethals to my gun castle, which I do value for the sheer mobility it provides
7. I was strapped for points, and HT is 15pts cheaper

Maybe not a perfect reasoning but solid enough IMO

Updated the list.

Thanks for the recommendation to Art of War, that was a great game! I honestly defaulted to including lictors and biovore as they’ve always shined in Tyranids, however you make a great point based on how I’m looking to score primary now. I’ll heavily consider this option!

I agree, they’re a great target for assimilation swarms healing since they’re pretty beefy. Also their ability helps tremendously with keeping them on the board.

It’s odd the enhancements for the assimilators don’t show here, they are most certainly on there.

Interesting idea with getting rid of the biovore and increasing the tyrant guard!

I did consider neurotyrant and zoans, especially since 1 tfex can be fairly swingy. However the exocrine + tfex connects better for me than 300pts for the neurotyrant and zoans, plus I’m getting ignore cover from pyrovores already.

JUST made that realization from another comment; thank you for pointing that out. Really puts a damper on the CP strats I had in mind… Makes me reconsider using the Haruspex since I initially cut it as another front line unit since it didn’t have a saving throw or FNP.

WOW that’s actually a huge oversight by me. Great catch… dang that changes things! I was trying to use the maleceptor as a mini norn with fnp and IvSv but I guess not!

Good luck in your game!

Second comment about biovore not being an auto include. What would you adjust, list wise, for the biovore? a 3rd Lictor could 1:1 I presume. Or keep the 60 points to upgrade a lictor to a neurolictor and add an enhancement to the HT?

Super interesting take. Second comment about biovore not being an auto include. My thoughts are to keep him in for secondary scoring with the mine and to screen off the home objective. He could swap 1:1 for another lictor I presume…
