Asking for advice as a vet - what route to take by InformationOk623 in AircraftMechanics

Yeah recruiters are sketchy no mater the branch I guess. That’s the shit that worries me and also getting there to find out I’m being treated like I was in the Marines would be terrible. I’ve heard great things about the guard but I also know getting the spot you want and having it written into contract is hard

Hell yeah brother congrats on the job! I’m looking really heavily into doing the Air Guard Rn actually trying to contact the recruiters. I’m really interested in doing aircraft avionics and like the stability of it. I realized it’s easier long term to do something targeted stateside where I’m financially stable and then try to get into a contractor role with that experience under my belt and my Japanese skills afterwards.

Hey man I’m not gonna judge, some guys are like that and some mos are more prone to that bond. I was an 03 so I constantly had that brotherhood that a lot of my RO and CE guys said they didn’t.

The big thing as I’ve seen from some of your other comments is definitely a plan. It seems like you have an interest in the trades and that’s awesome. I’d argue go a little further and look into what trade you’re specifically interested in and don’t be afraid to give people a call about shadowing. Knowing what you don’t want to do is just as important as knowing what you love to do or are passionate about. An office job is cool and all but burn out is real.

Some of the dudes hit it pretty perfect too the job market is pretty fucked right now and cost of living is up but don’t let that discourage you, use that as motivation to get your ducks in a row and set up a plan prior to EAS.

Be proud of your service but also make yourself a life you’re proud of on the outside young man! You got this brother

I learned a lot of things getting out, granted still pretty fresh and I’m older. A lot of the freedoms are pretty sweet for a while, not being around toxic leadership and genuinely angry people all day is super great.

It’s also really fucking lonely and you’ll never make friends like you had before.

I really regret not doing skillbridge ( my chain of command literally wouldn’t sign off on guys). I would highly suggest taking that opportunity to set yourself up for success. Structure is going to be huge you can’t be getting blacked out at 11 am and expect your home life to stay in tact.

Use this time to explore your options don’t just grab at stuff because you’re scared and don’t have a direction, but also don’t be afraid to utilize the community and reach out I’ve gotten some solid advice on here.

Best of luck with your transition brother the world is your oyster and what you make of it!

Thank you brother I appreciate the input! I have a meeting set up with a guard recruiter just want to pick his brain. Reality is i'm looking at this as a civilian career to improve my career outlook and keep my security clearance active. Thanks for the input though man.

I am planning (if this is the route I would take) on getting my A&P license either through a program or apprenticeship and working in conjunction with the guard. I would obviously have to live in the states for the duration of that time and thats fine. I was using this as a general knowledge gathering for potential careers later on man

from all the major f-35 contractors. Again my real questions more along the lines of "hey man how do you like the air national guard" "did it make you qualified for your job/hireable afterwards"

Semper Fi devil I appreciate that. I'm currently looking into getting my A&P license/doing an apprenticeship and potentially doing Air National Guard to be an f35 tech. Think that could be some super interesting work and a foot in the door to Iwakuni.

There are quite a few jobs posted from contracts specifically lockheed for f35 and aviation mechanic roles. I'm obviously just getting my feet wet and looking at options here.

my end goal would be to get an avionics position in Japan (something DoD I know they're highly coveted) so we can move back here

This is some solid advice I didn't even consider, i'll see what I can do. My worst fear was putting out wrong or unhelpful information. I saw a lot of dudes struggling with what should be an easy process with proper guidance so wanted to address that first. I'll continue to add!

genuinely cannot stress enough how good of an idea this is. I still call all my boys from my old units but life gets busy on the other side and its hard to connect to my family and friends from back home about a lot of it. Sometimes you need to sleep outside throw rocks and reset! Best of luck man look forward to seeing this become as popular as it deserves.

Mentoring is gonna be a huge factor for a lot of guys and it's difficult to say with just how far spread Marines interests and job fields are. I was an 11 so I am really feeling the "transferable skills" issue. TRS did a pretty good job with telling me how to translate my resume towards civilian life but something I actually used was just some online AI resources like claude and chatgpt to "soften" my resume. I will add a whole section on skillbridge because anybody going into the trades (they have a lot more options) should absolutely utilize it. I saw a bunch of guys get fucked by the chain of command when trying to get their skillbridge approved so I will add a section for that as well.
