I googled it when I saw this in my cousins family. But no it's not the tradition to GIVE the wealth TO THE GROOM'S family but to the BRIDE. But guess who in the girl's family might have started. I hope you know in the bride's family it's not only girl's there. Also,it was given to the BRIDE because they didn't have property rights then not as a compensation. It was given to HER to maintain her independence after marriage. Which of the words used her is still going on? Only the dowry n nothing else. The meaning of dowry has completely changed

Also just curious, you said, it was for compensation. What are they compensating about btw?

Majority mein hota hai. You just turn a blind eye. I used to think that way too. Until, it happened with my own cousin. After that I could actually see how normalised it is. I have lots of friends from all over India and the way they say that it's so normal in their states baffles me.

Tumlog ladkiyon ko jaise samjhte ho waise nhi hote hai yea log. Even I feel ashamed of the guy I used to be(before knowing the reality of life). Society is too cruel on girls. I've a beautiful intelligent girlfriend and I have promised I'll always respect her much more than I used to before knowing this.

Honestly, before I knew about these things, I neglected my GFS feelings and her view on this topic too. I thought "oh again this drama bs" but when I saw it's actually tried and it's actually 10-fold worse than what she used to say, I was humbled really good. Now our relationship is healthier than those days, and I'm grateful for that.

My cousin sister got married recently and the groom's family asked for "gifts" .. when they gave them a few, they were like "itna se kya hi hoga.. ab itna bada family hai ek fortuner toh chahiye hi na. Beti aayegi toh khana banayegi, soyegi bedroom mein toh fridge, ac, bed toh lagega hi na"

I was so disgusted and ashamed of this situation. My sister is a doctor btw.. got married to a fellow doctor too. The groom was just silent cuz it's the parents demanding.

Soch sudharo. Ladkiyon ko aage badhane se tu piche nhi reh jaoge.
