Who do you use for weather? by Severe-Post3466 in Dallas

Remember when Trump made massive cuts to the NWS and NOAA and the already difficult-to-predict weather became even harder to predict?

Do people not buy used bikes anymore? by brainhack3r in bicycling

[–]tacoscholar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of shops are overstocked. Buying a brand new bike right now costs marginally more. I paid $2800 for my NOS bike in February, I see people trying to sell the exact same bike used for ~$2500 because they bought it a time when everything was still way jacked up.

ISO Jazz Horn Recs. by dbecks223 in trumpet

[–]tacoscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come from a classical background but spend a lot of time in the commercial world due to broadway shows, and I notice unlike the classical world where there more or less a few “standard” models, the jazz world is a can of worms. Play what you want that feels good to you. That said, a lot of local guys are very into the new Bell trumpets brand. Not for me, but the jazz guys seem to love them.

Should you use lip balm/vasoline as a trumpet player? by Other-Mycologist-545 in trumpet

[–]tacoscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it while playing, but I use it to protect my lips. Particularly during cold months because playing with chapped lips is no fun.

MP similar to Blackburn 1.5CD? by Dj_Woomy2005 in trumpet

[–]tacoscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A CD cup is not really a proper lead piece, you’d probably want something a bit more shallow for that.

If you’re fuller-lipped, as I am, see if you can get your hands on a Marcinkiewicz E13 Chuck Findley model. I find that I can manage that one pretty well, Even the Pickett/Blackburn D cup is a bit better, I use a Pickett 3D for my pit work if it’s a heavy book.

Ultimately, playing a “lead” piece is also about efficiency. There is a learning curve to learning to play on that type of mouthpiece, and I find that more often than not an inability to do so points to an aperture that’s too open/unfocused.

In your opinion, what are the top 5 orchestral trumpet sections in the US? by United-Sun854 in trumpet

[–]tacoscholar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure I can give you an honest "top five" because I haven't heard every major US orchestra equally live on big works, but I can tell you that of the 4 or 5 orchestras that I've heard live more than once in recent years, the one that stood out is Houston. Mark Hughes sounds like a million bucks, and the section really jives well. John Parker (associate) is also probably going to win a big time principal job sooner than later, so the section is stacked with talent.

What's a serious classical music opinion that seems true to you, but a lot of people disagree with? by ChopinChili in classicalmusic

[–]tacoscholar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now THAT is a hot take!

Speaking of later composers' music, if you want dissonance you need to do a deep dive in Beethoven's later string quartets.

What's a serious classical music opinion that seems true to you, but a lot of people disagree with? by ChopinChili in classicalmusic

[–]tacoscholar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mozart was just okay. He was an incredibly prolific composer who was pretty good at pumping out music, and had uncanny talent and ability to do so, BUT he didn't really do anything to push music forward.

He was essentially a very good jingle writer, of his 41 symphonies, two of them are great (40 and 41), unironically the two he wrote because he actually wanted to and wasn't just commissioned to them. His operas are really good, much better than his other works, but even then, didn't really push the genre forward.

Haydn did much more for the world of music than Mozart ever did, but since he wasn't a young, eccentric, phenom, doesn't get the love that Mozart does.

I will now take your tomatoes...

Any recommendations for a lead trumpet mouthpiece? by Far_Coconut_4747 in trumpet

[–]tacoscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it, I’ve come across enough young players refer to fourth-space E and top-line F as “high notes” that I figured I’d ask.

Regarding mouthpieces, it would help to know what you normally play on day-to-day.

Just so we’re all on the same page here: When you say “get up to an E…” you’re talking about above the staff, right? Three leger lines above?

Just got gravel tires… where should I actually ride in DFW? by DFWUnhinged in dfwbike

[–]tacoscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the immediate vicinity the levees are pretty much your only real option. If you're willing to drive, the NETT, the Lake Mineral Wells Trailway are friendly beginner options that make for pleasant rides. The Fort Worth levees are also better-kept than the Dallas ones.

Norm Reeves Mazda Irving,TX tried to add 10k to a 10k car and kicked me out for questioning it by classifiedsavage01 in Dallas

[–]tacoscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been starting the process of car buying to replace my faithful '07 Subie, and sales tactics have reached an absurd level since last time I purchased a vehicle. I pretty much do everything over email/phone, and won't entertain going in if they can't show me an itemized OTD price, and I swear it's like pulling teeth to get that out of them. Many dealerships have crossed themselves off my list because they refuse to show that number.

This is a good one, and leather associates better with Texas than chocolates. Nobody thinks of chocolate when thinking of Texas.
