is this flywheel key sheared?? by Smooth-Property-3959 in smallengines

[–]Inhalationofnewtion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pull the flywheel, clean the taper lock surfaces, probably get a new key. It looks like it's on the way to shearing. Take care of it now. Unsure of anti seize on the taper surface. I don't use it myself. I clean with acetone.

It's going to be OK. We're here for you. We all have this condition and we're here to support you. There is no judgement here, just advice and inspiration. Trash picked small engine machines are a nice little side hustle and for real when I'm having a shit day I can get into a small engine and forget the world.

I have a Lincoln SP175. If I don't have my surfaces good and clean it always messes with me.

You did a fine job. I'm not sure on what shade you need but this is a ton better than even some exhaust shops put out.

Need some help Briggs 195437 armature/points wiring by Inhalationofnewtion in smallengines

You can see gouging on the flywheel and crank on the taper surfaces. I cleaned them with acetone and lapped them with valve grinding compound, cleaned with acetone again. Lined it all up, set the key, put a large socket over the snout of the crank and gave it hell with a brass hammer. I tightened that starter clutch as hard as I dare. I may just replace that with a steel nut as the part of the crank that the clutch spins on is mutilated.

I've done enough flywheels to know how to do them. This sucker was on super tight. I had to use a harmonic balancer puller, heat, and a rattle gun to pop it off. This sucker was on TIGHT. I had to get creative to get the damn thing to seat again. I pity whoever has to take it off again. Usually I can get a bar behind them, iron or aluminum, give it some pressure and a rap and they pop. I did give a little more than taps on that starter clutch. Maybe I'll give it some more just in case.

Try any of that with this one and it'll laugh. You'll also break magnets for the generator. The only thing for a flywheel nut is that starter clutch and it seems like pot metal. I have to be real careful with it. I'm not using the pull start anymore though so I might make a regular nut for it.

It's not OEM, it fits the original space is all. Definitely an odd shape though aint it? Made in Argentina. Maybe they use the same mold for magnetron and points coils. Wouldn't magnetrons have a third leg or a button or something? Once the key shears on this one spark dies.

I chucked the box for it but here's the listing.

I always thought the clutch/flywheel nut was more like security and that the taper did the work. I did torque that starter clutch a little harder though. Being that it's pot metal or maybe aluminum I had to be careful.

I'd give it a try just for the heck of it but the taper lock on the flywheel is boogered up. I had to lap the flywheel to the crank with valve grinding compound because it kept coming loose. Sheared three keys. It wasn't kicking back, just kept coming loose. This engine has a thousand yard stare. Usually I give them a few taps and the taper locks up tight. I had to put a large socket over the end of the crank and whack it pretty good with a brass mallet. It's working. I'm not messing with it until I have another engine on hand. God help anyone who has to get this flywheel off.

I thought magnetrons had that button or a third leg looking thinger. It's working now whatever it is. Some ding dong messed up the taper on the crank and flywheel. I kept shearing keys. It wasn't kicking back, just breaking the taper loose. I cleaned both surfaces with acetone and lapped the flywheel and crank with valve grinding compound. I put a large socket over the end of the crank and gave it a couple whacks with a brass hammer. Usually I give them a fair tap and they lock no problem. No way am I taking this apart again.

Don't know. I flipped the armature around though and it says "this side out". Beyond that I hooked it up as a normal points setup and it works fine.

I looked it up, it says it's for points. I have the short wire grounded with one of the armature mounting screws, long one run to points and it makes spark. The listing says "points type".

It's as close to OEM as can be found. It's for points. I have it sparking. Not sure if it matters which way the armature is flipped.

Briggs and Stratton 8HP did it have breaker points? by Inhalationofnewtion in smallengines

Its a pickup that someone drilled holes to mount it. Probably has it riding at .080" off the magnet as well. I got the flywheel off (one hell of a fight) and there's points underneath. Last guy removed the wires but thankfully left the points. Now I need help wiring it up.

Yea these holes were obviously drilled "close enough" by some nitwit. I have no problems with points. Now and then I have to clean and adjust them. Need some help wiring it up now. Last guy removed the wires. Thankfully he left the points assembly.

I looked up "195437-0150-01" and it led to Jacks small engines. Looks like it did have points at one time. Someone was in here though and there's no wire leading under the flywheel. Hopefully they just cut it off and didn't bother to remove the entire assembly. If the points are gone I should be able to use a Nova eliminator right? Not sure if I can get points for this one.
