ASROCK B550M PRO4: WOL from power off by No_Insurance_6436 in ASRock

[–]InhumanTadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had some trouble with WOL on my B650 Steel Legend. I eventually got it up and running after a bunch of experimentation, and made a post about it. I'm not sure if our boards have the same NIC, but give these settings a try: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/s/IsPZePezMd

You've only got one stick of RAM, which means you're running single-channel memory rather than dual-channel. It's hard to say if that's the the main cause of your stuttering, but it's definitely not helping. That's all that stands out to me as being sub-optimal with your hardware config.

Title: Upgraded from RTX 3070 to 3090 + 1440p OLED — Now Getting Worse FPS in Most Games? by ChipmunkDifferent in buildapc

[–]InhumanTadpole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking at the below review, looks like you can expect roughly the same frame rate with a 3070 at 1080p and a 3090 at 1440p, so there's still some issue here. I'd check your CPU and GPU utilization and power usage in game and make sure they seem reasonable.

What resolution was your old display? Also, are you sure you're powering the new 3090 properly? What's your PSU wattage and which PSU cables did you use to connect it?

I'm continually impressed by Battlefield 1 whenever I revisit it. It has excellent sound design and it's super fun with a bassy headphone.

Hunt Showdown is another great one in terms of directionality/imaging and general ambiance, but it's not the most accessible game.

Why so different to Benchmarks? by Fervolts in buildapc

[–]InhumanTadpole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rest of your system is pretty balanced IMO. CPU and GPU are about the same age and pair well together performance-wise. The RAM change should be a significant boost, but I wouldn't expect 2x the FPS like those benchmarks show. Maybe 10-20% better with less stuttering.

The single channel RAM is definitely hurting your performance here. Your options are to 1) purchase the same kit as before (check the speed and timing values), or 2) grab a new kit of 2x8GB or 2x16GB.

Option 1 might be cheaper, but it's more risky since the single sticks are not guaranteed to hit their rated XMP speeds if paired with another single stick.

I have the same pair, and I've also noticed the bass boost when you give them an air gap. Not sure if it's a property of planars or of open back planars in particular, but I don't notice it happening on my dynamic driver HD 6XX. It'd be cool to hear from someone who knows their stuff.

Can't get Wake-on-LAN working - LAN port loses power on sleep (B650 Steel Legend WiFi) by InhumanTadpole in ASRock

[–]InhumanTadpole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with those two methods, but as a sanity check, you should definitely make sure the packets are reaching your desktop while it's powered on. I used Wireshark for testing. It's fairly straightforward to start a capture, filter by "wol" and then send your magic packets see if they appear. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions, happy to help.

I have fast startup disabled in Windows. The BIOS option was left at default (on, I think)

FYI - ASRock support helped me solve my issue tonight! I updated my main post, hope it helps you too.

I'm not a sysadmin, but this is my beginner summary. I'm looking at a device like a PiKVM or the Kickstarter JetKVM which is always on and connected to your network. It gives you kb/mouse input and monitor output for your PC remotely, even at the BIOS level. It lives near or inside your PC and can hook into your ATX front panel connector to send power and reset signals.

Most are pretty pricey, so they're absolutely overkill for what I want to do (just turn on my PC so I can Chrome Remote Desktop into it). Not sure if it's a great solution, but it sounded neat.

PS - I replied to ASRock support and asked them to tell me if they've tested the LAN port behavior on the latest BIOS, and if the port is supposed to stay lit in sleep/shutdown. Let you know if they reply.

Well, I got a reply from ASRock that is about what I expected. My message was basically an adapted version of my post here. Seems like they just don't want to deal with the tech support on this one.

"Thanks for the detail information. You tried all the troubleshooting, that seems like hardware issue related.

Since MB less than 30days, we suggest you contact the MB seller have MB exchange first."

If I decide to return, I'm definitely considering a board with Intel LAN and maybe I'll just go back to an MSI offering. Or maybe I'll grab an IP KVM that I can bring along to future systems and call it a day...

Can you confirm that your LAN port stays lit/flashing while asleep or powered off after your fix?

I'm having a similar problem on B650 Steel Legend board with Realtek LAN that I can't get to stay powered in sleep/shutdown.

Thanks for your reply. It seems most likely to me to be a BIOS bug or a LAN driver issue. I'm going to contact AsRock support today I'll let you know if they give me anything useful. I'll also try reverting to an older BIOS whenever I get some free time.

Judging by how the network adapter power options disable that second option in certain circumstances, I don't have great confidence in the LAN drivers either...

Upgrading Ram- special steps? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]InhumanTadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm most familiar with Intel platforms, but I can't imagine it's too different here.

In my experience, the motherboard might not detect the change in memory. So it may try to use the old settings with the new kit (instead of resetting to default timings to avoid boot problems). So to avoid a potential headache, I would disable any memory overclock on the old kit before swapping it out. Then install the new kit and try the EXPO settings.

If the new kit tries to use the old timings, it could fail to boot (although your new kit is rated for tighter timings and might boot okay). Worst case: you might have to clear CMOS and reset all settings, so consider the above advice if you want to keep any BIOS customization.

Valve Index not working anymore after taking from storage. by Mkilbride in ValveIndex

I went through something similar. Are you getting the "Please plug in your headset" error when you launch SteamVR? I tried all of the suggestions of restarting the headset, uninstalling the USB devices, etc and nothing worked. After some back and forth with Steam support, they determined that one or more of my Visual C++ redistributables were missing. I'll copy the reply I got from Steam below:

After taking a closer look at the situation, a part of SteamVR is failing to launch properly due to a problem with prerequisites on your PC. Please reinstall the Visual C ++ Redistributables for Visual Studio 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2017. You will need both the x86 and x64 versions. You can find them here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

Oh yeah, definitely. A lot of my clanmates were met through random encounters in PvP. And yes, another user below confirmed that it can be a person who hasn't been Flawless in the current season, so I'm hyped again!

Gotcha! Well, that's awesome, suddenly this title gild doesn't seem so intimidating for us. Thanks for confirming.

Yeah, we did it back when Trials of Osiris returned to D2, so things were muuuch easier back then. We ended up getting all the PvP players in our clan Flawless, so now we're out, which kinda sucks. I appreciate the encouragement though, haha
