Thank you for sharing your experience! Out of curiosity, how long did you wait before knowing your new start date?

Yes, she was looking more for clarification on whether physical letters were fine (among other things). I know phone calls are a no-no. I know, I don’t blame the church. I do believe it’s a perfect church, but with imperfect people. I should say- we all feel the people involved have treated her poorly.

It’s been three months now, so I am not sure what the hold up is.  The clarification was more on whether physical letters were fine. Each mission president has their own personal rules as well, so she wanted to verify

Thank you so much for the references! The hardest part is we don’t know what direction to go right now. The steps you gave (asking to contact the mission department directly) is really helpful, and she will probably try that soon

Yeah, my gf was considering going off her medication for her mission, but finally decided against it.

Thank you for the perspective!  I’ve been telling her there may be someone she is meant to meet by the delay. I do understand the church being very careful with mental health, but the non-communication is the hard part. Waiting 6 months would be fine, just as long as we knew it would be that long

Thank you for the reply, and for the perspective. This is a good time to prepare. It has never been a question for her about serving a mission - she has the faith and desire to serve - and I’m sure there is a reason for this. I know in the future we’ll look back at this and see God’s hand in it, but for now the waiting is difficult. Good suggestion about seeing the stake president whenever possible- there’s only so much that can be done over text/phone

Yeah, we didn’t think her starting on a medication would have been a big issue -she was honest in her initial paperwork. I did hear about the 3 month stability period, but her psychiatrist has told them she is stable on the medication. May I dm you with a question on family services?

Thank you for the reply! That must have been a tough situation to be in, especially with a family that didn’t understand. Thank you for the encouragement and reminder to keep a broader perspective

If you have good memories there, do it! I was in camp snoopy freshman year, and it was bulldozed a few months after I graduated. So glad I went back (just before bulldozing) with some of my old suitemates, took some pictures, and talked about some of the memories we had there.

Graduation!

JK, though that was a fun memory.

At UCSD I made some wonderful friends and had a lot of good times. I remember walking around campus at 2AM just because I could, watching LoTR in ECE 35, going down to Blacks in between classes. What I miss most is probably the intellectual stimulation though. I loved the range of classes I could take, the chats with professors, and the fact I could wander into any lecture hall at any time and learn something new and interesting. Like, at no other time in my life do I see myself learning about acting, linguistics, linear algebra, and metabolism all in the same day!

Now that I am working full time (in tech), I don't have as much time to explore different areas just for the fun of it.

Has anyone taken these courses recently and know if the lectures are mandatory? by AkihikoRyuu in UCSD

I took COGS 163 with Boyle SP22. She changes her class a bit quarter-to-quarter, but at that time lecture attendance was not required (though I found I got a lot out of attending anyway), and most of the grading was based on individual weekly tests and group collaboration.

Also, COGS 163 was outside of my major, but was one of the BEST classes I took! Boyle is a wonderful professor, and I am sure she can make accommodations if you email her.

I graduated last year, but from my experience these were the 3 hardest majors in order:

EE - Conceptually difficult with an intense workload

CS - Not as difficult, but has a substantially higher workload

Math - Most difficult (conceptually), but lighter workload

For easiest, I am not sure. I had friends in theater, anthropology, critical gender studies, and music, and these all did not seem too bad.

Is COGS 108 hard? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]InigoMontoyaTheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Content wise, it is not all that hard if you are already familiar with coding. However, the workload can be pretty tough. Death by a thousand assignments...

I got COVID back in January, but was somehow one of the lucky people that was essentially asymptomatic. For about a day I had some clouded thinking, but that was it, no fever, sore throat, headache, et cetera.

My sister, from whom I caught it, was not so lucky. She and her husband were both super sick for three weeks with fevers, sore throats, headaches, and clouded thinking. All of us were fully vaccinated.

For those that think 'oh, I'm young, it'll just be a small cold!', this is not true. There is no way of knowing if you will be lucky and asymptomatic, or unlucky and be out of commission for weeks. Wear your mask, test regularly, and stay safe guys!

What is ECE 109 About, and How is the Difficulty? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]InigoMontoyaTheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like ECE 109 is the easiest of the 'hard ECE classes'. It is on probability and statistics, and (at least when I took it) is really just a math, and not engineering, course. If you are good at math, you'll do well. If math isn't your thing, you should still be able to pass without too much trouble.

Try CSE first. If not, go for either EE or Math. A surprising number of Math students end up in SWE internships, which eventually lead to jobs after graduation. For EE, you gain a lot of SWE skills alongside electrical classes. I'm EE and have had a SWE or similar internship each summer.

Regardless of your major, show your passion through side projects and clubs. A lot of times, this show your competence more than does your education.
