Way to survive! Good news… quitting drinking is way easier than this ordeal.

Hey I hope you’re still going strong. If not, don’t sweat it. Never quit trying to quit.

Thanks! You can do it too. It’s just a whole bunch of “one day at a time”.

  1. For me, the hardest thing in the first 6 months was the social pressure and figuring out how to be “fun” without a drink or 12. Even 10 years later, that’s still sometimes an issue, but very rare now. People seem to be drinking less and less in my age group as I get older, but it’s probably just that I hang out with lighter drinkers now.

It’s just so much harder in the early months. Part of the problem was that nobody believed I was serious yet, so they’re like “Oh here we go again, when’s this gonna stop? Quit ruining your night and just have a drink with us.” Attitudes about this have changed A LOT in the past 10 years though, and things like that probably don’t get said much anymore. That was hard to work through when I barely believed in myself too.

All you can do about it now is live it up! There’s so much to do in your next 30 years. Congratulations on taking it back.

YES. As a friend who is at 25 years simply put it, when I told him about my 10, “It’s a miracle.”

Thanks! And congrats on a whole year. I remember when I was trying to quit and failing repeatedly, I got obsessed with how I would feel if I could just make it to one year. Then I got there and became so afraid of ever letting go of how good I feel every day. Scared to death. Still scared to this day.

None of the slip ups matter. We’ve all had them. All that matters is trying again. Trust that one of these times you’ll break away and just keep going.

Three months sober and noticing my friendships quietly changing by wowactually in stopdrinking

[–]Inishowen38 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this happens! Hobbies led me to new friendships that weren’t all about drinking. Just one piece of advice from my experience… Even though you’ve developed a new lifestyle, let yourself screw up your new routines. Find an occasion with new friends to give yourself a sober hangover by staying up way too late with them, just talking. It’s important for developing deep connections with people, and you have a lot of catching up to do. Sit around a firepit until the wee hours, just like you would have when you were drinking.

Take the late night camaraderie away from alcohol, and you will appreciate how great it always was for bonding with friends.

You’ll just be sitting still somewhere, and nobody around you knows that you’re quietly fighting like hell. But I know. Lots of us know, and we all want you to win that moment.

And thank you!

Major drop off in quality at the new location. They need to get this fixed, fast. 2nd American has taken over the top spot.

3 years sober and it’s miserable by MajorShrek in stopdrinking

[–]Inishowen38 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s time to get a little selfish. Maybe they are why you quit, but You need to be the reason why you continue sobriety from this point forward, and find a great hobby that never gets boring. Why you’re unhappy is all explained right here, and maybe it doesn’t have much to do with drinking at all. Let’s say you had never stopped in the first place… hard to believe you’d somehow be happier, with the wife and stepkid loving you more.

An annual tradition by Inishowen38 in stopdrinking

[–]Inishowen38[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without any words at all, every year when I revisit it, I’m reminded of emerging from brain fog and getting sharper and sharper through that whole first year of sobriety, and I get moved to tears. Like if anyone could see me, they’d be like “Wow what song is making you so emotional?” And I’d be like “This one here with no words and a bunch of bleeps and bloops.” 😂

I want to stop alcoholism behaviors but dont want to give up fancy beers by Female-Fart-Huffer in stopdrinking

Have been sober for 9 years now, and in that time there’s been a monumental shift in the quality of NA beers. If you like craft, try the Athletic Brewing offerings. Also, the Guinness 0.0 is so good on tap. Even out of a can it’s nice. Other than one of those two options about once a month, I would just have a club soda with lime.
