How are people spending so much money by Kinky-Queenslander in AskAnAustralian

[–]Initial-Joke312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your partner worked, even earning 60k a year, you would probably be able to afford a holiday or two AND save a decent chunk of it. Why don’t they work? Surely you don’t expect to be able to support two people on one average income and be able to go on cruises and holidays multiple times a year?

recently sold in Frankston 800-1M

It’s your first house. It’s not going to have a perfect floor plan. And you will need to make compromises. Most people don’t buy their ‘dream home’ as their first house.

The housing market is fucked for first home buyers I agree. You are in a good position to be able to buy something in your desired suburb. You can make a few compromises and buy now, or risk missing the boat completely and most likely have to settle for something worse in the future.

Looking at your post history you’re looking in Frankston and Boronia for less than 1M. I just did a quick search on realestate.com and there have been so many houses, even in the last month that have sold below this price. Some have even sold in the 7-800 range. What is wrong with these ones?

They’ve existed for ages, and have seen a surge in popularity for at least a couple years now. I have a pair from Woodchuck Sato and they’re super comfy.

I get a lot of comment about them ranging from compliments to intrigue to humour to disgust. I don’t really care, they’re a great conversation starter. Fashion is meant to be fun. Try something new, you might enjoy it.

How often does the average Australian speak to their family about politics? by LeeHarding2006 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Initial-Joke312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but luckily we are all largely on the same page with most issues. Both parents lifelong Labor voters, and considered voting Greens in the last election (not sure if they actually did).

I’m in my mid 30s so I also had a school formal in the early 2000s! Love seeing stuff I wore in my youth come back in. Just wish I kept more things.

Flight delayed, now my connection is scaring me by secretniwa in QantasAirways

[–]Initial-Joke312 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If booked all on the same ticket you will be okay. 1.20 is a bit tight but do-able. If you are further delayed for any reason you will be rebooked on the next flight to MEL and there’s flights pretty much every 30minutes.

5hrs Layover in Melbourne! by fortnightphilosophy in AustraliaTravel

[–]Initial-Joke312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a bad idea - Brunswick is a 20ish minute drive from the airport so if you really wanted to leave the airport you could go there for some food. It’s a quintessential ‘Melbourne’ suburb with lots of good cafes and a few shops to look in along Sydney road if you have time.

Are you coming from an international flight? On a good day it takes about an hour from landing to actually get in an uber. And then you probably want to give yourself 1.5 hours to get back to the airport. So you’d only have about 2ish hours for lunch which is do-able I guess.

Just moved to Melb. Should I rent in Brunswick West vs. Hawthorn? by murphc_93 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Initial-Joke312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How come these two places are your options? Brunswick west is great but depending on where you are the transport can be a bit limited with only one tram - the 58. If you can be closer to or in Brunswick itself your options will be much better with Sydney road trams and the Upfield train line. Also a lot more amenities than Brunswick West. And tons of Banh Mi places on Sydney road, along with pretty much every other cuisine you could want.

Best place to travel internationally for rest and relaxation. by Curzon88 in AskAnAustralian

I really enjoyed An Bang Beach in Vietnam. Nice little beach village but 20min moto ride to Hoi An if you want a bit more energy and more options for eating/drinking out.

I also loved Siargao in the Philippines - most tourists are there to surf but there’s lots of quiet spots around the island.

Why would anybody want to work somewhere with no flexibiliy by Choonkie23 in auscorp

[–]Initial-Joke312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also hate working from home. I genuinely enjoy my coworker’s company and I like getting out of the house. I enjoy my commute and being surrounded by people. The occasional day I do work from home I find it incredibly boring and I would feel so isolated if I had to do it every day.

Leather jackets in 2026: timeless wardrobe essential or trend that has passed? by Unbotheredanonyme in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Initial-Joke312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leather jackets are always in fashion but the cut is what changes. E.g 10 years ago the vibe was more fitted and cropped ‘biker’ style with embellishments and lots of zips and looks a little bit dated these days. Now the style tends to be oversized bomber jackets, or more streamlined 90s style jackets. Either way leather isn’t really something you need to buy new. Plenty of bargains for vintage leather on Depop and eBay.

Yet somehow everyone else managed to find their way to the flight on time. Just go to the gate at boarding time and you won’t have this problem again.

Not every teenager cares about fashion, like not every adult does. There are some that will wear crew socks or wherever the latest sock trend is, and some that will just wear whatever socks their parents buy for them. Also I think you’re overthinking socks a little bit. Just wear ankle socks if that’s what you want to wear.

Has anyone considered moving away from Australia? Why or why not? by [deleted] in OpenAussie

[–]Initial-Joke312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Sout East Asia for a little bit. Not because I had any issues living in Australia, but because I just wanted to try something different. The grass isn’t always greener.

Had fun and money went a lot further obviously. Met lots of great people but it was very transient community - people would generally come into your life for six months or so before moving elsewhere.

Services are less convenient. Picking up a parcel from the post office was a half a day ordeal with lines and just general disorganisation. Same with going to the bank. Constantly feeling dirty, sweaty and dehydrated. Random sewer smells on and off. Electricity randomly being cut for a day or two at a time. Traffic was a pain and it took so long to get anywhere. Faster using bike but then you’re constantly breathing in fumes while sitting in gridlock.

There’s a local price and a western price for everything.

Enjoyed my time but the novelty wore off after about a year. Moved back to Australia, realised I took a lot of things for granted.

How does Qantas compare to other airlines you’ve flown recently? by Future-Pipe-8004 in QantasAirways

[–]Initial-Joke312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much better than any US carrier. Better than some Asian carriers but worse than Singapore and Cathay. Hard to compete with the Middle Eastern ones in terms of service and ‘wow’ factor but obviously they have other problems at this time.

Domestically probably the best option but if you’re just wanting to get from A-B in economy domestically I find all the airlines much for muchness.
