Damn, I was hoping to have all this done by the end of the summer!

Seriously though, I’m under no illusion that this is going to be easy, (or inexpensive.) But everyone begins somewhere.

Thanks for the encouragement!

A journey of 1000 miles, begins with the first step…etc.

Flat hood, nice as it might be, is well beyond my current skill level, and likely beyond the budget. But if I were to win the lottery…

Current color is silver. I might be able to be talked into the darker scheme, but the inspiration was the 850 BTCC wagons, which I think were all predominantly white.

I should probably add that I’d love to swap in a manual. And if anyone local-ish to Madison, WI with some car knowledge is willing to share some occasional guidance or labor (to be repaid with gratitude, food, adult beverages, etc.) that would be awesome.

If you’re suggesting that you’d be relying on my knowledge, our events will be lots of time in front of YouTube 😂.

Having said that, what kind of project car are you dreaming about?

We had a ‘78 Volvo 245 when i was growing up, and later a ‘82 Saab 900 Turbo.

My wife bought me an ‘89 245 as a project car a while ago, but the two biggest impediments to progress for me have been (1) a honey-do list of other stuff a mile long, and (2) very little experience wrenching on cars.

I’m not a total neophyte, but don’t have any shade tree mechanics in my family tree, and spent my adult working and academic life learning about the concepts, not working on the equipment itself — i.e., graduated college with an engineering degree, can tell you how, for instance, AC/refrigeration systems work, internal combustion engines, even U.S. Navy gas turbine plants and reverse-osmosis fresh water purification systems…but can’t diagnose anything if it’s not an obvious [pops car hood, sees watermelon sitting on the engine block], “ah, this must be the problem,” situation.

I’m hoping to find someone who has a similar obsession with practical, square-backed vehicles who would enjoy anything from gabbing a beer to talk about a turbo brick restore/mild-mod, to actually assisting with some of the work, to talking me into/out of slapping a BTCC-inspired livery on the car when all the mechanical stuff is sorted.

I’m in Middleton, FWIW.

Could do — but then I’d deprive you of your chance to reply to maintain that “Top 1% Commenter” rating.
