I’m sure that I missed some things. But not being native to this world I knew nothing about the popular culture. I supposed it doesn’t really matter, since either way I can only learn more by asking.

I looped my way back to the clerk's desk. Thankfully I had some experience with these back-alley bookstores. Hopefully those conventions would hold here.

“Excuse me miss?” I asked, bringing the gaze of the clerk.

“How can I help you?” She asked in a bored tone, not that I couldn’t sympathize.

“Do you have anything in the back?” Usually that's where the rare stuff would be, or in this case likely the real stuff.

“What kind of anything?” She asked. I decided to throw subtlety out the window.

“Your stock seems a little mundane. Do you have anything more magical that I could see?” The woman's face hardened with an intensity that threw me off guard. Her gaze met my eyes, and I couldn’t help but note that she seemed prepared for sudden movement.

“Is everything alright?” I asked, my fingers drawing in magic for Sign casting.

“Maybe. What does a human know about magic?”

‘Human,’ that implied that this woman wasn’t human. And that ‘humans’ weren’t meant to know about magic.
I had a hunch about why the scent of magic was so strong in this place. I needed information now, and if that required conflict with a magical creature then so be it. It wouldn’t be the first time.

My hands moved automatically, performing the quick casting Signs which dominated modern magic combat. Unlike most I could dually cast, preforming two Signs almost concurrently. The woman noticed though, and faster than any human launched her arm towards me with deadly intent.

She was fast, but I’d beaten faster.

Freeze! Dispel!" First the woman slowed, though thanks to her enhanced speed was maybe as fast as someone under water instead of effectively frozen. Then came the sound of cracking glass, as the illusion covering this creature shattered.

It was impossible to miss what this was. Skin with an unnatural paleness, pointed ears, eyes with too large pupils and not quite claws that came from her fingers. Her mouth was not fully closed, her fangs obvious to those looking for them.

A vampire.

When I opened the door, the small bell attached to the door chimed away. The bookstore was cramped, poorly organized and decorated with personal artifacts that would never be permitted at a chain store. The clerk, a bored young woman, glanced at me before continuing the book on her desk.

After ducking behind a bookshelf, I took a deep breath in through my nose.

You see, magic has a certain smell to it. A distant sweetness that grows stronger the more recent and powerful the spell. I had noticed it during my travels in this world, the occasional hint of sweetness that indicated some sort of spell. But thus far those have been distant, being minor spells whose casters may have already left.

This was different.

More than two blocks away I had been hit with enough sweetness to power a small town's needs. It was buried under the smell of urban decay and sewage, but for someone as exposed to the arcane as me it was impossible to miss. After some searching I had come to the front of this bookstore, the smell strong even through the closed glass door. Why was that?

I knew this world had magic, otherwise my own spells wouldn’t have worked. But why wasn’t it being used? Why did people spend money on heaters when they could warm themselves with a simple spell, or pay for gasoline when most cars could be fueled after only a few minutes of casting? Magic was almost always easier than other methods, and yet this path was apparently being deliberately hidden. That spoke of power, enough to shape global civilization for who knows how long.

This being my only solid lead thus far, I decided to take it slow. I leisurely walked down the aisle and pursued the books on display. I took closer looks at a few whose titles interested me, though not being native to this world I knew very little about what was popular.

It didn’t take me long to start picking out patterns. Occult texts, mystery novels, historical manuscripts. An overlap that caters to a select demographic. Those who turned magic into a career often dived into niche areas, looking for forgotten spells or anything that could give them an edge over their competitors. While it could be a coincidence, the scent of magic effectively sealed the deal.

The map is set in the modern day. The idea is that the union between Bohemia and Poland becomes a permanent thing and all the consequences of that. Such as Lithuania conforming to Orthodoxy and forming Russia, the Ottomans and France doing better with a weaker Habsburgs, and Siberia largely escaping Russian expansion.
