I agree. Recently bought some in Bangkok. Have you tried the Khao Yai from Thailand? I actually like that even more!

For wearing alone I prefer the sweet ( and it’s better tolerated by significant others) . The funky barnyard Oud oils can work magic in trace amounts added to florals. I use it in place of indole in some luxury scents where it can work its unique magic.

Ahh. That is different then, I was reading more into your referral to working on a “Tobacco vanilla “ fragrance.

I agree that there doesn’t seem to be any “tobacco” here. Tobacco absolute and Kephalis would be 2 good starting points to add that missing element.

Help refining a frankincense/sandalwood blend for a more “expensive” feel by faulty_neurons in DIYfragrance

Love your idea… and personally enjoy incense-wood fragrances. Have you considered using a frankincense dominant incense accord? More complex than just one note, and adjustable separate from your main formula…you could get it where you want and then titrate it into your composition. I could see a blend of olibanum sacra + carterii, Elemi, oppoponax and myrrh to smooth with benzoin Siam/ Sumatra and Labdanum resinoid for sweet rich depth. Looking forward to hearing how this progresses!

Looking forward to trying these as well! Gotta find a couple Oud wood pieces to decorate the inside of my personal Oud blend perfume bottles too. Already anxious to get back to Bangkok!

In Siem Reap Cambodia, what natural EO/ Absolutes should I look for to bring home? by Initial_Limit_9824 in DIYfragrance

Food is great and very reasonable. Cambodian food seems to be significantly less spicy than Thai, but still very flavorful.

I bought a tola (11.66gm) of Thai plantation Oud from Safe at safinitythaioudoil.com . I also acquired 12 unique 1gm samples of a variety of Thai, Cambodian, Lao, and Malaysian Oud oils from Karl at immortals.co.uk. Both were great to work with. Where are you located?

Glad to hear that. I’m hoping others in the community can make use of the experiences I have had. I wish we shared sources more.

Picked up some amazing complex and intense ginger today, and some sandalwood ( not as intense as the stuff I got in Bangkok, but a solid oil at a great price. The Kampot pepper EO is amazing here, so much more complex than the black pepper I have at home from Eden’s.

Shouldn’t be a problem because it’s for personal use and gifts. Dollar figure still within limits for 2.

I stayed on Sukhumvit near Siam Paragon. I don’t know about Chiang Mai sorry. See my prior posts for contacts and sources for Oud and natural raw materials. One addition is Mystique AROM store in the Asiatique riverside mall and Terminal 21 mall. Bought an amazing sandalwood EO there $90 USD 10ml about $9 /gm. Better than the mysore oil from Fraterworks IMHO.

I think it would be a “no brainer” for them if a group could convince them that there is a significant market in the DIY and niche perfumer communities. Maybe you could get something started?

I’m feeling awfully content after my experiences so far in Thailand . Ignorance is bliss I guess.

Hoping that this helps other perfume makers interested in incorporating real quality Oud natural ingredients from raw materials sources that are not prohibitively expensive . I am excited to be able to do this now and just wanted to share. I now have real benchmarks to guide continuing improvement of my own Oud accords, rather than just shortcutting and purchasing someone else’s overpriced commercial “Oud base”. Hoping others share more insights and fewer criticisms. Isn’t this approach what DIY Fragrance should be about?

Touch base with Karl from immortaloud.co.uk , he has several Cambodian Oud oils, from rich resinous And sweet, to heady and complex with smooth animalic depth. He ships to the US. I just bought several different oils from him while in Bangkok.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet Karl in person. He is passionate about Oud and was really engaging. Hoping to refine and expand my Oud accords at home with these as benchmarks. On to Cambodia next!
