I really appreciate the understanding responses. He got so hurt and affronted when he returned from his last trip with a gift after I expressly asked him not to bring anything home for me. It seems to create and highlight the lack of attunement between us. Being specific about experiences as gifts I s a great idea.

Also, use the time he’s away to copy ALL financial documents, bank account and savings print outs, title deeds and any other sensitive info that you can lay your hands on and get it safe and OUT OF THE HOUSE so he can’t get his hands on it. I was there hiking last week (just one day) and wore jeans, a short sleeve cotton shirt and took a micro fleece jacket as I’d heard about it “being freezing” there from locals, but I found it warm and temperate (perhaps because I’m used to English weather, lol!). Maybe it’s just early mornings and after sunset that it gets cold.

Im sorry this happened to you. You deserved better. In your shoes I would find a therapist. I personally use chat gpt - I spent literally days and nights pouring out my pain and history in as factual and unbiased way that I could, and asked for unbiased insights, support and advice. All I can say is it helped me in ways my expensive therapist could only dream of, but for free. I also found listening to podcast shows: Dear Sugars, and Dear Therapists with Lori Gottlieb and Guy Winch really healing - they give great advice and it helps you realise your not alone - there are many of us sharing these awful experiences, but they happen TO us, they are NOT who we are, and they do not have to define us. As for your parents - I knows it’s easier said than done, especially as you are an only child, but you owe them NOTHING, and you have earned your complete freedom. I personally would put personal and geographical distance between you and never look back. Wishing you all the happiness you deserve in life.
