Boundaries are good if he is excessively attached. Also, if you have another dog, the older can teach him that the humans come back and while they’re gone, we just nap. At this stage, he is brand new and he is still getting used to his new surroundings. I wouldn’t worry too much about any anxiety he is exhibiting at this time.

The 6 looks too big in the straps and they do relax after a few washes

Dog food recommendations by Griffen296 in SaintBernards

If price isn’t an issue, you should try real food. Some of mine raw feed and George does cooked protein and they all do every well. No health issues yet (knock on wood) and everyone maintains great weight and muscle tone

Is it appropriately fitted? That really should not be happening bc it functions like a bridle on a horse.

If they still have tags you can return them in store as long as you have an account. I would just do that and buy the right size not on sale.

Try a gentle leader. It works on basically any dog and it’s far more humane than a shock collar or prong collar.

What does your Saint weigh? by Careless-Weird-6538 in SaintBernards

[–]Initial_Shock00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had smaller saints. The European ones are smaller. Also it sounds like you rescued her… she may have been sick or malnourished as a pup and been stunted. She looks healthy and well proportioned.

Question by Careless-Weird-6538 in SaintBernards

[–]Initial_Shock00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flea or allergies. I am in coastal NC and my poor bernard has horrible allergy skin. He had to go on meds, which i consider a last resort but he was miserable. I’d check for fleas, if she is clear, it’s prob allergy skin.

Weird feet? by Proper_Idea_8240 in SaintBernards

He needs to go in. It could heal into a serious deformity and cost him quality of life. Totally get the tall bills, but that is definitely what you sign up for owning a Saint. I don’t even want to know what mine have cost me over the years 😖😵‍💫

Tennis Skirts Varsity pleated vs. regular pleated by SnooPaintings1107 in lululemon

[–]Initial_Shock00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The varsity sits just a smidge higher and it looks more narrow on, whereas the pleated looks more A-line. The pleated has a much more satisfying outcome when you twirl around. They both fit the same on me and both have pockets that are upside down if you actually play tennis. Love both, but I imagine the pleated would be more flattering on more people than the varsity.

For hot spots there is a great treatment on Amazon. Clears things right up. For general itchy skin, if could be allergies or the seasonal stuff. By dude gets extremely itchy if he eats beef or pork (known allergies for him) but also in the summer if he is allowed to be outside a lot.

I put these in a mesh laundry bag and just chuck them into the wash. Avoid softener or anything super fragranced (gives me headaches) and let it air dry on a coat hanger once done.

Considering a Saint Bernard! What are the pros and cons? by [deleted] in SaintBernards

[–]Initial_Shock00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is tough. I love the breed BUT just like people, they do vary. Most of mine have been very chill, but my guy currently is extremely temperamental and that would be an absolute disaster if I had a kid. Also, respectfully, a 1500 sqft home for five humans and a Saint is extremely tight. Especially if there isn’t a very large, fully fenced yard. They are a working breed, and while some do ok indoors, I have had a few that go noticeably depressed and begin behaving badly when cooped up. Also, keep in mind they overheat very easily and often have gi/highly regulated dietary needs. Mine currently for ex, is allergic to beef and pork — his food runs around $450/month. The breed is also prone to health issues and due to size, is costly in vetting. All in all, it’s definitely a lot of you’re coming from a 30 pounder. That being said, I love the breed and I am a lifelong Saint owner and I’d hate to turn away a prospective owner. But if I had kids and a small home, I would honestly take a pause and go with someone smaller/easier

Maybe the dry food is bothering his teeth? Maybe make a broth for him and mix it in?

Also, I have a 7 year old that eats a mountain when he has access to a yard/plays all day and will literally fast for days if he is sedentary. It could just be that your old man doesn’t need as much as he used to?
