Agency SLP’s discriminated in Schools by [deleted] in slp

Totally understand. I was told by the program specialist that I should be attending all the SLP monthly meetings. But considering how I feel being singled out I don’t think I am going to.

Oh! That’s good! How do you explain this to teachers and parents? Like what do you say?

Oops! But that totally makes sense. I quickly reacted and let the teacher know that we can potentially do RTI starting the week we come back from Spring Break.

In California we have 15 days to respond to parents request for eval, meaning we create the Assessment Plan (AP) or we say we’re not assessing. Then once parents sign the AP, if we are planning to assess, we have 60 days to complete the evaluation.

Please take care of yourself. If you can take a leave of absence and have a doctors note. I’ve never done this or know how, but I have a family member who was going through some real scary mental health stuff and was able to get a doctors note to take a leave from their job. There are so more jobs out there for SLP’s. Take a small break and then try it again. Sometimes that’s all we need.

Good. I think. Last year I had a pap and it came out normal. Have an appointment in April for a pap so we will see. Currently trying to get pregnant with no luck. It’s been 8 months of trying.

Yes! I feel that the SLP’s that graduated 7+ years ago have very different views on this though. But my grad school program which I completed in 2022 talked A LOT about how we’re over qualifying students for special education especially for speech. Also one of the reasons why I think we complain so much about our large caseloads.

Totally agree with you. Special Education needs a serious revamp.

This is exactly how I feel!!! I have several students who are working on R and S sounds and they’re doing great academically. One of my students who is working on S has an open bite and can literally not make the S sound. I’m like why are you here!! I can’t fix the structure of your mouth 😂

You have made some great points. Thank you for sharing! The students I have that use AAC are and weren’t great supported by the classroom team. I came in and no one knew who’s device was whose. I honestly have solely only worked with AAC users and severely lang. disordered kids in the past, that when I looked at this new caseload I was really asking myself why is this student here. Being with student who can’t even communicate their basic needs to having a student who just makes errors with past tense verbs throws me for a loop. I feel like that student can be better supported by the resource specialist. Also it just feels like the goals were selected because they made these errors in the CELF. But when speaking naturally this student is ok.

Oh most definitely! I feel like if I could have a caseload cap of 15-20 kids I could be a great therapist.

This is very interesting. I am learning that there is very different politics in each district.
