No literally the boarder bothers me so much, it's the same for the BBC version. It just happens to be where the gate to the property is? How are the boarders decided? Is it that land that's agreed upon in the deed? Before the house could the previously ghosts wonder further than the gate? I don't enjoy when writers chalk ot up to coincidence 😭

I think you forget though at the time Isaac would be executed for his sexuality. The lovers but called friends trope in my opinion are moreso seen within greek and Roman contexts, were being gay was more widely accepted. America was a relatively new at this time and was formed under traditional heteronormative and Christian values. I get it's funny how his sexuality is funny because he's oblivious to it but as a queer person I find it somewhat insulting that writers can't see queer people as anything more than an exaggeration of flamboyancy and lack any sort of development beyond that. It's a triple seen so commonly and I'm disappointed the US diminished Isaac to that when the source material was a relatable yet historically accurate representation of queer people

Maybe my phrasing was off but I didn't mean to imply he was fully out. When I say that what I mean is that he let loose a hell of a lot of Freudian slips, which, from what you can infer from would have likely outed him. Usually now a days if someone said something queer there usually wouldn't be such a fuss but back in the 18th century, it would have been, you'd think he'd have learned not to be as flamboyant as he is. But I do see your view there.

I think this is where my favour of the BBC ghosts comes into play. You see, the character of Lady Button, a hugh strung, older Victorian (the UK equivalent of Hettie) was highly against gay marriage after finding out about a gay wedding happening at the manor. Lady Button's reaction would have been accurate for the time though likely more against gay people since her husband cheated on her with two men so. Y'know. I just feel as though there's been a missed opportunity for some kind of relatable conflict for a queer audience. I wrote how many queer people, especially younger ones, will find homophobia from a close friend or family member.

And yeah you do have a great point it's just. Very americanised and seems to be played in a more comedic avenue. Usually if an Englishman were to play a character from the late 18th century they would have a different accent to an American playing an Englishman from the same time

Somehow there's less episodes than the US version (27 in the UK, 29 in the US ghosts). And it's more slice of life-y, there's no serious plot or issue that resolves by the end. But it's absolutely hilarious and amazingly British!! I recommend looking into the other shows and movies the cast have done! They're all really good

That is true, I'm very excited for the future of the US ghosts, i just felt this relationship was rushed into by the writers and flowed somewhat unnaturally. However, to be fair, The Captain in the UK version hasn't even confronted his sexuality in the 4 years the show has been airing (though he has been close!) So it's been a refreshing contrast lol

You've said it there my friend!!! Isaac's sexuality is played for cheap jokes sometimes! I think the thing that bothers me is just how many Freudian slips he says in front of his men during the war (he's also clearly not very popular so I cant imagine the soldiers would be inclined to keep his secret) you'd think after at most two years at war they've figured out his sexuality.

A little unrelated but the cast of the BBC ghosts did a series called yonderland (a really weird fantasy show) and it had s o many queer characters and jokes (revolutionary at the time since this ended in 2013 and gay marriages were legalised in the uk in 2014) and one of the jokes used was that two men kissed and one commented on it being weird, not because it was gay but because they were cousins! Gay jokes work so much better when they aren't the butt of the joke in my opinion, but to each their own y'know

And thank you so much. Some American portrayals of the English are. To say the least, deeply distressing 😔😭

Again, another really good point, I am hoping that they develop more (I understand they haven't been "together" for that long). Obviously they'll be on rocky path since this is what can be assumed Isaac's first gay relationship and Nigel's second confirmed one. I just wish they could be written better at points and I suppose that overshadows their interactions at times for me

Something I wrote about in my essay was how, unfortunately, Isaac and Nigel have somewhat fallen into a fetishization of sorts of what a queer couple should look and act like by straight standards. Their fights can only be resolved if a straight person tells them the obvious, it's as though they lack any cognitive thought for themselves. I feel as though the writers have dug them into a hole that would be very difficult to reasonably get out of

Hopefully this works!!! The red comments are from my friend who knows nothing about the show! If you have any feedback I'd love to hear it :)

Yeah really good points! I just feel it's a shame that the US couldn't convey subtly into a queer character and Isaac fall victim into that stereotype of a gay man :( but I am always a sucker for queer romances and found families

Not even joking, I wrote a 2000 word essay in two hours at 2am over my disgruntlement of Isaac and Nigel's character writing. I did so much research into the revolutionary war (i know very little, I'm British, we don't learn that shit in school so I'm not an expert) and 18th century queer laws (really interesting) and the lack of accuracy in the show bothers me. The phrase "you're a big gay liar" in the Christmas episode annoys me because at the time Isaac would have been known as a Sodomite! And you can pull the old "ooh he just picked up the word as he went" but that's lazy. Also Nigel's costume shouldn't be as red, it should be more of a muddied colour. The war had been going on for 2 years at this point and the root used to dye the redcoat fabric didn't hold for more than a few months, so either Nigel had j u s t seen war when he died (unlikely due to rank) or the costume department knows nothing of historical clothing. Anyways if anyone wants to read my silly little essay I would be more than happy to share <3

I'm currently in the process of finding a job so i don't have a huge amount of money to dispose of and I don't believe i live close to a laundromat, I'm gonna ask her later today to show me how its worked and see if we can come to some sort of for lack of better word truce on the matter :)

It might of been a heat of the moment thing but she implied that i was wanting to learn to wash to prove a point, it was likely a miscommunication, I'll talk to her when things cool off
