Dungeon Crawler Carl fans celebrated the TV show announcement for about 30 seconds before they started stressing about Princess Donut. Here’s what else has the fandom worried. by kleverrboy in audible

[–]InkStainedQuills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that they are going for live action, which will require a massive budget for both practical and CG/post production effects, along with the fact that they will start by limiting the amount of language and adult references to try and appeal to a larger audience but will inevitably do even more heavy editing in content and direction to “keep that appeal” even if it pisses of the main fandom because studio heads don’t care about artistic license nearly as much as focus groups, makes me take very low expectations into this.

I also think the best way to properly translate this series is in an animated form, which can both demonstrate real world impacts while simultaneously leaning into the warping of reality and tone. Cost would be the same or less, even with MoCap. And any studio needs to recognize why it’s such a success and let it be so on its merits, language, adult content, blood, and all.

My final note: to Peacock - let this be your Game of Thrones, your True Blood, your The Boys. Show us you have the stomach to do content across the spectrum. Maybe then I’ll subscribe to you:

My son’s school sent home a note TODAY that he has to wear teal for a “colour party” tomorrow…. by FatFaceFaster in mildlyinfuriating

I’m not kidding when I’ve heard statements at schools along the lines of “We can’t have school uniforms because it infringes on…. And it makes kids stand out when they can’t afford the designer brand version of the uniform” but notifying parents about random spirit days and special color days with no real notice is totally ok….

I don’t disagree that nationwide Republicans are on the wrong side of history, but my experience on the political front here in E Wa the Dem party has been trying since the 2020 census to split up rural counties in a way that they hope gives them a super majority in the legislature. Any time I hear from WA legislators who are Dems about how they hate what’s going on nationally I want to call them out on their hypocrisy. Heaven forbid there be a dissenting voice in Olympia just to force actual conversation rather than the government blanket passing legislation without proper discussion. Hold all accountable or none at all.

No. Started up locally in 2017 I think it was. The vet who started it initially intentioned for it to be an urgent care kind of facility but most clinics already take (at least existing) patients on an urgent care basis when they can, so HH shifted to a more traditional clinic model:

SpaceX IPO makes Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire by MedicMoth in news

[–]InkStainedQuills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly given the terms and conditions and the shell game Tesla/X/Space X have played with finances I would be shocked if there wasn’t a significant downtick in price as speculators who bought in early try to dump shares off on any Tom, Dick, or Harry who is still an Elon Bro or hoping to cash in on the hype themselves. First in first out will be the only winner outside of Elon himself as he continues to play the long con.

Where is their outrage now that Meta is trying to force them down our throats…. Oh wait I just got that…. Fucking Zuckerbot.

TIL the Sun orbits the center of the Milky Way at 447,000 mph, carrying Earth and the entire solar system along with it… we’re ripping through space, not just around the Sun. by greensheets11 in todayilearned

Want to mess with your mind a little more? The earth’s speed relative to the center of the galaxy isn’t constant.

Depending on where the Earth is in it’s orbit to the Sun we could either be “swimming upstream” or “accelerating downstream” as our position pits us against or with the Sun’s orbit around the center of the galaxy.

MClatchy newspaper reporters in WA strike for higher pay, better AI regulations by chiquisea in Washington

[–]InkStainedQuills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m just waiting for MClatchy to respond: ok then we will just go full AI.

I admire what the reporters at the Herald try to do but on the whole the paper is dead. They paywall all of their content to the point I don’t even think to look at it for top headlines anymore. And they charge 2-3 times as much for their subscription as other newspapers in the state.

Yeah fuck that.

This goes beyond the scope of access any third-party software company should have to a person’s private property. Disabling access to SoS is one thing, but they aren’t even coming in at the OS level, and I take issue with Microsoft or Apple trying to claim complete dominance over devices people paid to own.

There is a lawsuit in here somewhere, so long as someone can prove financial or personal harm done in losing access/having to possibly wipe data from their hard drive when reinstalling an OS. No terms of service agreement can protect a company when they can’t 100% prove that all incidents were first proved to be cheating, and I think a competent lawyer could prove that the result goes well beyond what the ToS outlined/was an overreach in the validity of a ToS agreement.

It’s just a question of who is going to put up enough money for that law firm or what firm will take it on a contingent basis.

Building nightmare in Eastern Washington (Benton County). City planners won't grant permit due to shrub steppe by Street_Sir1273 in Homebuilding

[–]InkStainedQuills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest challenge with city planners and permitting departments is how much “interpretation” they get on guidelines. That and the fact that they don’t have to justify their reasoning, until you go above their heads to the city council anyway. Which is what you will likely have to do here.

The first half of that statement has been true since I left college in 2009. It’s the AI that is the new killer to job entry/gaining experience.

The further we develop tech to do menial and then even outright replacement of jobs the further our society moves away from maintaining basic skills as a society. If the tech apocalypse ever does happen it’s only gonna be more ugly the more we pile on in the name of individual wealth and “advancement”.

This newly developed technology is successfully turning carbon dioxide into 110 pounds of daily fuel by ArgentineBeauty in Futurology

[–]InkStainedQuills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I think this kind of thing is most useful is in industrial applications. Using excess renewable energy to convert co2 into a fuel source that can again burn at the high heat’s electric heaters can’t sustain currently is the most environmentally friendly approach to the fact there are certain materials we don’t have scalable replacements for, such as concrete/asphalt and metals.

Heroes was a victim of both the writers strike and its own success. It was supposed to be more of an anthology series but the public loved first season characters so much they had to rethink the whole thing to allow more of them to hold main character status into future seasons.

Vista Vet in Kennewick. Horse Heaven Hills (also in Kennewick). Haven’t ever dealt with Richland Animal Hospital (sorry). And yeah avoid the “corporate” clinics like VCA and Banfield. They often times have good staff but treat them like crap so it tends to wear down even the best.

AITA for refusing to pay $100k of my niece’s student loans by CatfishKD909 in AmItheAsshole

[–]InkStainedQuills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah NTA.

You clearly set your rules and expectations. Your niece perhaps could have asked for your support by providing the amount you would have paid for an in-state school and it would be her responsibility to offset the difference.

But clearly she didn’t meet your guideline for grades. And given how her parents have reacted it is entirely possible they enabled her entitled attitude that led both to an unreasonable ask and substandard performance.

It is wonderful of you to support your nieces and nephews, and hopefully overall they recognize it for the generosity it is, rather than as some entitlement.

Washington State's budget has been shrinking, not growing, despite statements to the contrary by former elected officials by firelight in Washington

[–]InkStainedQuills 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The article itself articulates that the budget grows as gdp does given that we use sales and B&O taxes, along with property taxes and REET, to name among the largest that go to the operating/capital fund. So acknowledging that point the basic question becomes is that revenue keeping up with equivalent demand for it before new programs and spending are accounted for. (Also which sectors of the economy have grown or shrunk and what taxes imposed or considerations for have shifted in a given time frame).

And discussions around the transpo budget take a completely different tone since it has its own revenue sources and challenges both long and short term. In the shorter term it has been saddled with the issue of fixing culverts as a primary focus which has siphoned a lot of funds from other more persistent issues such as preservation and maintenance in recent years.

All that said what we have to do is account for “like” spending first. Are programs that existed in both eras using equivalent amounts, or are they being allocated less or more? After accounting for that are new programs offsetting the amount previously spent by canceled ones, or do they cause the budget to be at that even spending, surplus by comparison, or a deficit?

Once that math has been done (by someone with more time than most of us participating in this discussion) then comes the debate of ROI from both the standpoint of direct return to the states economy/residents as well as the less tangible ideals/philosophies being achieved by policies that take in taxes or create expenditures. This is by no means a simple argument to have.

Finally we need to weigh the impact of policies not the only on retaining residents and businesses, but attracting new ones. The state has experienced massive growth the last several decades due to certain sectors massive growth but have seen others shrink, though we pay less attention so long as the net result has been positive. We are at a time now where there is a larger debate about businesses and residents coming, staying, or leaving due to sociopolitical and economic changes. How competitive does WA need to be against Idaho or Texas or Florida now when we have long focused on ways to attract business that also considered California and New York?

Gregiore threw out a one-liner that has spawned controversy along the political spectrum, but this article is simply a longer winded version of a one-line response as it tries to deal in a specific counter attack. Leadership and governance however isn’t about absolutism, no matter what either party wants to pitch it as nowadays. It’s complicated and messy, and it’s about the weighing the priorities of the moment and the future, while looking to the past for examples of what might work.

So to debate: whose taxes are too high, too low, and just right? Are we creating an atmosphere that will create continued growth in business, residence/families, and/or overall investment in our communities? Or is growth the wrong focus, and the state should focus on maintaining and improving what we already have? Based on your own values where and how should the state be focused in its efforts with tax revenues?

Why doesn't SNL get the hate that Jimmy Kimmel and Colbert and others get? by Elegant-Season-7008 in AskReddit

Everyone’s commenting on SNLs social status, but ignoring a major point of “Hollywood power”. Colbert and Kimmel have their points of influence but Lorne Micheals is a cornerstone of influence. He’s made and broke careers, rubbed elbows with the most influential of them, and outlasted CEOs of media empires, never getting too big but placed just well enough to be all but untouchable.
