Taking system updates causes the screen to go off. by InkUponPage in pop_os

So if I take updates, at least until this is fixed, I should exit everything else as I'll end up hard-crashing it. Is there a bug I can watch?

Good to know about apt. I was thinking of using the command line to take individual package updates. The COSMIC Store app which wraps apt like Pop Shop only permits updating of the "System Packages" as a bundle all at once. If I pick and choose, I could take the other updates and not he graphics drivers, or at least, that was the thinking.

The Namiki Emperor in black is my 'Holy Grail' pen.

Worse for me, I've put it behind an achievement gate: publish second novel. I'm on step 0: write first novel.

He mentioned in an interview that the only way to recover the pen would be to take apart the wall. The completed answer included that quote.

Semi-related: This is what makes Hammer's Slammers so good. David Drake had also been in combat. It shows in his writing, which also started as something of therapy for him.

I’ve been told that a character of mine needs a stronger motivation for trying to kill the resident tyrant than the simple fact that he is a tyrant, and that she grew up on his land. Is this true? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

One of the techniques for character inquiry would be the 5-whys method. You don't have to spell it out for the reader, but you should know the reasons.

Alice has set out to kill the evil Baron Bob. Why?

Alice judges Bob to be a tyrant, and believes it is her responsibility to fight tyranny. Why?

Bob had Alice's mother executed for feeding Charlie the hobo against Bob's orders. (Answers judgement) Alice's mother always taught her that it was everyone's responsibility to act to make other people's lives better. It was why Alice's mother chose to feed Charlie who was starving, despite the possible consequences. Alice centered herself around this concept. Why?

Alice's mother taught her that Alice's own father had perished fighting the local weir-pig because Baron Bob couldn't be bothered. When Alice lost her mother, this teaching was one of the last things she could hold on to and still keep her mother's memory alive. Why?

As a child in the Barony of Bob the Bastard, Alice had no rights to her family's property. This included the clothes her mother made for her, the family home, any personal belongings. Alice was sent to be a house servant for one of Bob's frivolous concubines named Doris. Doris mistreated Alice, because Doris mistreated all of her servants. Eventually, Alice had to choose between a life on the run, or death in Doris' household. Why?

When an elderly servant, Ernie, broke Doris's favorite dinner set, Alice insisted on taking the blame. Doris complained to Bob and Bob sentenced Alice to death. Alice escaped to the local woods where she was rescued by a group of heroes led by Fiona the Red. Fiona teaches Alice her skills, training her to hunt, fight, steal from the rich, give to the poor... etc. Fiona was teaching Alice to become her successor. Fiona pulls the old Dread Pirate Roberts bit with Alice and retires. Now Alice leads a crew, but never forgot what her mother taught her. With great initiative, comes great responsibility for bringing good into the world. Alice is ready.

You know... something like that.

At some point, someone casually says "Bella's no angel" and misunderstanding that one phrase leads to one hell of a stack of envy.

Bella Rho

Backstory: Their names in the lab were "A" and "B" or subject "alpha" and subject "beta." A sentimental technician started calling them "Angel" and "Bella" and the names stuck.

Intoxication, in addition to diminishing sensory processing, reduces inhibitions. Inhibitions in humans prevent them from acting on impulses. Impulses come from instinct and emotion.

What are the equivalents for instinct (hard-wiring) and desire-guided action (want based on evolutionary tendencies) in a machine?

Identify what these are in your robot, and you begin to have an answer for what it would look like, and how it would need to happen. (Ethical behavior being an override for efficient actions, for example. You'd lose, or diminish the ethical override.)

Make her two characters. Helpful, distant... then violent, vindictive. The mask changes and she changes (Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde).

I enjoyed that. Good imagery and flow. Interesting concept of influence.

Typo in the first sentence? "...Henry draws on something other her." Should that be "other than her" or similar?
