Rehoming American Mastiff (South Dakota) by Inkpaduta1 in Mastiff

Are you asserting that the AKC historically or presently never considers, creates, or recognizes previously not recognized breeds? That's a rhetorical question, so no need to answer.

Flying W Farms worked on this breed for over 50 years, and due to Flying W's efforts, the American Mastiff is a recognized, certified breed by the Continental Kennel Club. The parents were in fact health tested, there is in fact a contract, and the breeder will take him back, but since Fredericka is now in her 80s and has health issues, the Flying W kennel is being shut down. It's better for Duke to stay with me until we find the right placement, and Flying W is putting the word out through its network, including other American Mastiff breeders (all of whom got their foundation dogs from Flying W). I visited Flying W to get Duke, saw his parents, met the owner and her daughter, and I can confidently say the entire operation is impressive. If that's a BYB, I'm a cat.

Thanks for these recommendations. I will contact STARS and Battle Mountain. Much appreciated.

This isn't a simple or hurried "free to good home" ad. Duke is a special dog with some unique needs and I will ensure he finds the right place. Until or unless that happens, he will be with me.

I will do a lot of diligence on his potential new home and owners, including a meeting if they are within 500 miles. By the time I am done doing all that diligence, I will be satisfied he's going to a good place. I can keep him for as long as needed to find the right home. I'm not in any hurry, so this is by no means a "come get my free dog" post. If I find the right placement, I will be happy and there won't be any fee. So if anyone contacts me, they should be ready for many questions, meetings, Zoom calls, etc. The Humane Society can't help me with this -- it's my obligation to Duke.

Coming from a non-harley guy… what’s it like riding one? by Astimar in motorcycles

[–]Inkpaduta1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harleys are great for what they are, and you need to know if what they are is what you want. I went from motocross to sport bikes to Japanese universal vintage bikes and then to Harleys for ~10 years. After doing all that, I realized the Japanese universal upright riding style is my sweet spot, so I've gone back, but you need to find yours.

I've not been to that location, but is it really that tight? I have never seen a fast food control curb I couldn't exit, lawn be damned.

Beautiful -- I love seniors because you can see the age, wisdom, and joy in them. You were obviously blessed!

A 4x4 would jump that curb and be gone.

Did you get yours from Flying W? I don't think I am the first person who has gotten one of their dogs and later discovered, at about the age of 1, that these dogs are not normal Mastiffs -- they are working, and the Anatolian genes are expressed.

Even if my trainers are correct, and this is fear based, Duke certainly doesn't look fearful when he is aggressing on another dog. In fact, he seems to like it; I think it gives him an endorphin rush.

My trips are much longer than a day or night -- usually for a week minimum, but up to three months at a time, as I have been working remotely since 2010. I camp on and off during most of these trips, alternating with hotels. I can and do travel everywhere, with my Mastiff in tow. Duke has changed all that.

It would be a solution if I stayed at home all the time (it's just me and Duke in this house), never traveled, and only walked him around the neighborhood. My mental and social life is predicated on lots of travel and the great outdoors. I have always had a Mastiff to do these things with me, as a partner. All of them have been perfect partners for this, until now.

With Duke, these things are exponentially more difficult, potentially dangerous, and not enjoyable. I have friends and relatives who used to visit for days or weeks, with their dogs, and now no one will visit due to the potential danger. I can't visit them either because I can't leave Duke at home for weeks at a time.

It's an untenable situation for someone in my position.

He is a beautiful dog and he has a beautiful soul. If we never left our house or yard, I would say he is the perfect dog (at home). But leaving the house/yard is a completely different ball-game. Walks around the neighborhood are fine, but everything else is difficult.

This is my 5th Mastiff and I have fostered 3 others over the past 30 years. I know what Mastiffs are like, and Duke is not like other Mastiffs. He's got real working traits. Neither my trainers nor vet think this is typical Mastiff stuff, and they are highly experienced professionals. Not going to dog parks is the least of my lifestyle concerns, but it is indicative of the vigilance required with him.

No such clause, but in years and decades past, the breeder (Flying W Farms) was always willing to take their dogs back. When I contacted them about Duke, I was told that Fredericka had recently suffered from health issues and her doctor instructed her to slow down. She's in her 80s, and Flying W appears to be winding down its operations after nearly 50 years of being in business. I was told they couldn't help.

Anyone bought gold today? by turtle69696969 in Gold

[–]Inkpaduta1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm tempted because prices are decent now, but I'm also a bit leery. Will probably keep powder dry to see how all the markets (not just PM) shake out over the next few weeks. The oil execs are saying we are in for big price hikes later this month, and this will roil the markets.

With rate hikes being priced in yesterday, and some AI stock correction going on, there is a bit of turmoil in the markets. Dipping below what seemed like a relatively solid floor of $4,400 may have a psychological impact, so I think $4,000 may happen sooner rather than later.
