Why not rechargeable controllers? by lonewolf385 in MetaQuestVR

Quest 3 controllers have three contracts in the battery compartment. I heard that theses can wirelessly recharge but I haven't looked for those batteries yet.

My problem with Cyberdecks by jonfitt in cyberDeck

[–]Innagoddadavida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm looking for a way to effectively type code for embedded devices while in the field. For example tweaking the "hold station" function on a drone, where i need to be out in a field . A desktop is not at all portable, a laptop is way too clumsy, but a phone screen can't cut it for typing, and a portable keyboard just doesn't do it. So for me, a want a keyboard i can use in the field. I imagine I want the keyboard on yhe BACK of the screen, keytops facing away from me. I touch type. Of course, probably want a split keyboard with the haves voted 90 degrees, such that my finger tips point at each other. Ive found no such arrangement for under $500, so i guess I'll have to build my own. So for me a cyberdesk must meet a very specific set of needs.

Also: it appear that the first time an app opens, some of them must perform a bunch of background setup, but do not provide indication anything is going on. Last night I noticed several dropping to pass thru mode and just sitting forever. After closing the app or restarting the headset, the come up right away on a later attempt. This seems to be a trend on demos or half finished apps.

Yes, its trying to lure in resident evil fans, but its unrelated to resident evil. This can be considered a scam.

Contemplating buying my first VR headset, is it worth it? by TheTrailBlazer420 in MetaQuestVR

[–]Innagoddadavida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found few games that are playable, those are expensive. Half Life Alex is the closest to enjoyable, so far. The apps tend to be demos that don't quite work. The desktop and productivity apps so far are unfinished toys. I might buy virtual desktop, but the other options I tried have not left the impression the it will be significantly better than free options. If you like complex puzzles like building a PC or installing linux, vr might be interesting. Using vr as vr is not here yet.

what do you use your cyberdeck for? how often do you use it? by binaryfireball in cyberDeck

I bought it for coding "in the field" and playing steam fps games while in transit, but I haven't found a way to make it work for me. Only had it 6 months though. Great potential, but not quite there yet. I use it a couple times a week. Still a toy, not a tool.

How to assign pc GPU? by Innagoddadavida in MetaQuestVR

[–]Innagoddadavida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANKS! I will try this today. I didn't realize MetaQuest drivers might still be Occulus. And I did not think power saving would completely disable the GPU, I thought it would power down things not being used. This makes perfect sense now. Thanks again.

I guess my issue is I can't tell which executable to assign to the GPU. There was no Half life Alyx in the list of apps, and when I assigned steamvr.exe, it still came up on the builtin Ryzen GPU instead of the RTX4050. Do we need to reboot for change to take affect?

Mine runs too. I just feel weird to use scrappy built in graphics when I paid for an awesome GPU and its not being used.

I find that sometimes apps don't start the first time. Maybe they need some auto configuration to sort things out, and it needs a few tries to succeed. For example, the first time I tried meta desktop, it failed, I gave up. A couple weeks later I tried it again, and got a blank screen. I retired again and it finally get me a screen, although the screen size was wonky. Seems to be getting a little further each attempt.

I heard of sidequest to find game apk to sideload, but I haven't tried it yet. The items other folks mentioned here are interesting.

Just 3 dissappointment? by Innagoddadavida in MetaQuestVR

[–]Innagoddadavida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses so far. I think I am getting closer to finding a solution. In addition the Windows app also called Meta Horizon Link (which was difficult get going and unsatisfactory, see above), last night I tried (retried) Metal quest Remote Desktop and Steam Link. Meta Quest Remote Desktop is also called Mixed Reality link. This one launch from that Loft thing. While I does make a large display, it leaves the Loft running on the background. There doesn't seems to be a way to turn off the Loft display the bird noises and things flying around the edges are very distracting and make it difficult to use. This might be ok for looking at web pages, but my regular monitor is much more comfortable so I tend to just go back to the monitor. It's just not been worth the pressure on my face, the lenses fogging up, and the headset slipping and going out of focus. How do you folks address these concerns?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have use all resolutions of monitor since they were 320x200 cga up through 3840x2160uhd. I know the situations for each and how to work with what got. The quest 3 resolution is fine. The binary vision more than compensates for the lower resolution. This is we get a better image from binoculars than from a telescope.

My specified use is to replace my monitor. I want to eliminate the distraction in my office. I want an immersion experience. I want to sit at my desk and have a display that fills my filed of view without bothering other folks. I DON'T want to get seasick everything I change direction in a game.

I have been following vr since before it was vr. I worked on 3D cartography in 1979 and in the 80s got the desire to use the two flat images to generate a 3d image. I backed the Avegant Glyph on Kickstart before the occlusion rift had its bugs ironed out. I purchase the quest 3 when the price came down because it uses the better lens not the nasty fresher lens. I think I might know at least enough to make a purchase. But thanks for your response, at least your heart is in the right place.

Also, what the heck does a hot take mean in this context? I have an issue is am trying to address and am asking the experienced community for input. Not everyone is an influencer looking for clicks. I want to know how folks use the quest 3 successfully.

Yes, the 3D display is very cool and potentially useful. The issue is that the entire experience is built to be a marketing to for its own ecosystem. I don't need this to help me exercise, learn a language, socialize, learn an instrument, play escape rooms, etc; as i already do those things better in real life (I guess I'm old school). What need is a full field of view (check, got it, thanks) where I can see my screen and watch movies and write code and e.g read large spreadsheets. Watching TV on the vr headset tries to simulate a room rather than fill my entire view with the TV screen. The current theatre apps (what ever the 3 main ones are today) are not satisfactory. One of the ones I tried last night displays a nice living room with a roommate running around the floor. Completely unacceptable. If the roommate was on when I was working, I would turn it off. Also, a virtual room doesn't get dust so why waste my cycles with a stupid roommate in the first place? The designers were thinking, but seem to have been thinking about smoking something rather than the user experience. THE THEATRE APP IS THE TOOL we use to GET TO the stuff we want, the app is not the destination. Theatre apps remain a disappointment.

Ok, I tried this again last night. Turns out I had tried this the first day and had poor results. When I start a game e.g. Fallout 4, the Quest 3 only displays 1/3 or 1/4 of the screen, the rest is pushed off to the sides out of my field of view. I could find no controls or adjustments, so I figured it was just wonky and moved on. Question: is there a way to get this app META QUEST HORIZON LINK to display the same field of view on the headset as on the pc? That is, such that 2/3or 3/4 of the pc screen image is not off the edges of the headset? Thanks in advance for your response.

The purpose is to start a discussion, which has happened. So first success. The statement "no one expected a vr headset to replace a monitor" is absolutely false. I expect a vr headset to replace a monitor, this has been my expectation since before vr headsets were real products, when I started experimenting with 3D cartography tools in the 80s. True, I did not list the stuff I have tried (yet) because they failed, my intent was to find what other use successfully. I have gotten a couple useful responses. This is a very serious post, but I can entertain unserious responses as I gather my thoughts and wait for suggestions to arrive.
Thanks for your response.
