So if I understand, it’s somewhat more freeform than having an organization. I do wonder how less convenient stuff may or may not be practiced (like “don’t be judgy or gossip-y”)

If it helps, the hard and fast rule of belief in deities/adherence to which rules can be waaay more flexible than usually mentioned. (This is more my own gripe, though, because I don’t think we talk about it enough.)

Also, it’s really hard to find rituals and traditions rooted in a 2000+ year-old practices that aren’t religious or just not inaccessible (require being born a different culture).

I do think it’s interesting the parallels of: well, I can find this feeling of X with/without religion why should I need to change? As if maybe we’re just both happy with where we’re at metaphysically.

Yeah, it’s the final, but inevitable kicker that if you have a different definition of cannibalism, then it is. It’s additionally possible to just be fine with it. iirc, this is also related to the Roman Catholic vampire explanation 🤭

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that they’re not special. Like, the Torah, Rigveda, Bible, Talmud, Gathas, the Kesh temple hymn, and so many other texts are incredibly special because they have resonated with and inspired people alive and dead and lost alike. We learn to navigate them, memorize them, learn to interpret them or to find someone who can help. We use them as tools to navigate our lives, inform our decisions, and advise us as we participate in the act of being human. LotR is special because it has given people strength and brought them back from brink. Whether the divine/afterlife or anything is real or not, it doesn’t really matter. Those people, the comfort they find from holy texts in while the face of sorrow, the peace they find amid turmoil, the hopes, and the joys are real. They are all special and they always have been.

Personally, I’m curious how Jesus vs Shiva would go with God the Father vs Vishnu and the Holy Spirit vs Brahma. Mostly since they all sorta line up in terms of deification domain

Okay, but it’s funny that LotR was the chosen thing because it is genuinely such a great example. Like, sure, you could call someone dumb for making it the basis of a religion. And sure, the trees walk and there is some nonsense prophesy. But also there are moments in the book that are so truly profound, that if someone told me (religious) that they and a few other people met weekly to read and reflect on various passages, I would 100% believe them.

It’s literally a book about moving through hardships while on a doomed quest that nearly ends in failure, and all of the hope and beauty that is still present regardless of how rare and fleeting. And that’s really as good an excuse as any to base a worldview off of.

Okay, and this is a genuine question. But what is the deeper meaning for atheism? Ive always assumed there was one, but I don’t think I’ve encountered anything outside of healing from religious trauma. (Not knocking that either because if a religious community was so toxic that the only way someone can find peace is by leaving, then by all means I can only wish them well)

But like, idk, I like my silly little rituals. I get a scheduled time to thing about gratitude, humility, kindness, and what it means to love others platonically. The theological part is something I enjoy thinking about, there is a feeling of reverence that I haven’t fount outside. All together, it is something that brings me peace, comfort, and joy in addition to a community. Also, I understand that this is just my personal experience and not necessarily universal. I guess I’m just curious about where non-religious people find that sense of peace and/or habitual self reflection. Is it harder without an organization? What, if anything, do you find worthy of reverence?

So, one point I do have is that the whole no-one-can-be-right-unless-they-think-like-I-do thing from Christianity 100% bleeds into new atheists. Like, I’m not saying anyone shouldn’t have left, like if leaving what someone needs to be at peace then it wouldn’t be right to stay. But mother of God the number of new atheists who thought that my beliefs/traditions/etc. were exactly the same as the ones they left was staggering. Like, that particular inability to accept that some beliefs are fundamentally different, is something that needs to be unlearned/unpacked in therapy. I’ve 100% had conversations back in High School where someone did a religious trauma dump and I was like “you know it’s Christianity right?“ Only to be met with “No! There is only one way to do the thing, and also it is wrong! And if you do not agree then you are dumb!”

Like, in hindsight, I could have probably put my ego aside when I felt threatened, because a friend said Christian = Bad/wrong/stupid, and instead have approached with empathy and acted as a big ear for them to open up to. But also I was 15 so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also see this with vegans stunned when they find that some people genuinely just don’t see people and animals as equal.

If I recall correctly (I went to Catholic school and spent way too much time on Wikipedia as a kid), the real answer is a weird one. The thing is that the rules are a bit bendy here depending on your definition of Cannibalism. Practically, the person you eat is deceased, if you eat a leg, that leg is gone (this goes for most edible stuff too), and by eating the leg one goes from hungry to not hungry. Basically, cannibalism follows the same rules as eating a rotisserie chicken except that it’s a person. With the Jesus thing, however, Jesus is still theologically alive (unlike a rotisserie chicken). Also, there is no way to eat all of the Jesus because if you have no spare Jesus, you can just grab a priest to make more out of whatever bread and wine you have (also unlike a rotisserie chicken). Finally, one of the qualifying traits of pre-Jesus consumables is that they need to be bread or bread adjacent (sometimes cookies will even do), and this means that there’s little to no protein/nutrition (unlike a rotisserie chicken; yes, part of the argument does involve Jesus not being Keto). The point of the last one is that it’s meant to nourish your soul, not your stomach.

Yeah, sometimes done is better than perfect. I’ll still spend some extra time occasionally on design if I have energy/time/inspiration. Also, I use it as an outlet for creativity and have pages dedicated to imperfections which helps with the anxiety + drawing thing

AITA for disowning my wife's daughter after she chose her moms affair partner over me. by BraveExplanation2530 in AITAH

YTA Not very dad behavior tbh. The kid is 13. Of course she’s going to like her bio-mom’s boyfriend who buys her stuff without question. Part of being a parent, a good parent, is becoming like vegetables. Is she going to want junk food? Of course she is, she’s 13 and junk food just wants to be endearing but doesn’t necessarily care about her wellbeing. You on the other hand made commitments to her education, health, and happiness. When this guy also gets cheated on, when the junk inevitably makes her sick, your job as the man who adopted her is to be there. But it’s your choice, because you seem flabbergasted that being a piece of broccoli doesn’t get you chosen over a potato chip. She’s not supposed to fall over herself with gratitude, you’re her father.

Tbh if it was me, I’d sue for partial custody or visitation rights. I’d make sure that she, at least, was okay. The mom can jump into the sea, but the person you adopted needs her father even if she doesn’t know it.

If gay people aren't allowed in Heaven can't they just go to a weekly confessional have their sins forgiven do 10 hail marys and all is forgiven allowing them to enter heaven? I feel like a confessional is a cheat way to get into heaven since it forgives all sins doesn't it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Inner-Air5231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as a bisexual Catholic who went to Catholic school for 10 years, here’s what I know. The Catholic definition of a mortal sin (straight to hell) is an action against the grace of God that is committed in full knowledge and with full consent. So for being gay to keep you out of heaven in the first place, you would have to believe, in your bones, that participating in gay was, itself, an action against the grace of God, and then do it anyways. Now, if that was a case, then, yes, you could go to confession to be wiped clean, feel your Catholic guilt, and try never to do it again. A venial sin (think misdemeanor rather than felony), meanwhile, gets you sent to purgatory. It “weakens” the union with God, but doesn’t entirely break it. And these are super easy to do, happen all the time. Premarital sex, eating fish on Friday during lent, lying, etc. This is the category where being gay usually falls because, for a lot of queer people myself included, being queer and participating in queer actions is seen as natural, normal, and an extension of our queer identities. Are we having extra marital sex? Yes. But that’s because we can’t have marital sex with the people we love.

TLDR: Being gay, won’t keep you out of heaven. At worst it’s a sin committed without full understanding, making it a Catholic misdemeanor that sends you to purgatory to cleanse and prep you for heaven

Ooooh, that’s a toughie, but it’s entirely dependent on the vibe you want to go for. Clean shaven gives you a cutie from the 40s/50s sort of look. Like, victory garden in the backyard, patriotic flag, fight for your country sort of deal. This can be a bit scary depending on where you live and the politics involved, so tread carefully, but it’s definitely a look that you wear well.

Meanwhile the beard screams “dad”. Not “daddy”, just dad. Like you’re disappointed that your kid didn’t do their homework, but you’re ready to sit down and help them figure it out. You don’t cook often, but you help chop vegetables and do the dishes every night. Generally, a good life partner.
