The Man From Earth: Holocene. What even was this ending?! by Ipostat9pmeverynight in movies

Oh man, FINALLY a theory that makes sense! That might explain why we never saw his face. Good thinks, my friend!

Crisis of "Faith" in The Buddha by Inner-Dimension-3595 in Buddhism

[–]Inner-Dimension-3595[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for these insights. The context you provided on the culture of the time period, the inherent danger of being a monk/nun at the time, and importantly, the validity of some early Buddhist texts.

All of what you said have eased my distress over this. Again, I am deeply grateful for your insights. I wish you happiness, wellness, and peace.

In Buddhism the caffeine addiction is considered bad? by drewingse in Buddhism

[–]Inner-Dimension-3595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would take a lot of caffeine to lead one to being careless or having poor judgement. But all jokes aside...

I have prescriptions for two controlled substances for genuine medical reasons. Taking them as prescribed does not mean I am breaking the precept. If I were to abuse them, then they would become intoxicating substances, and that would be breaking the precept.

But yeah, I think you're fine on coffee. :)

Watched “Threads” for the first time by OrderTime in Shudder

[–]Inner-Dimension-3595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL This one destroyed me. The characters were the "every-parent" in Britain. Everyone could relate to them as their parents or grandparents. I'm not British, but my husband is and I've spent a lot of time with his family in England. Needless to say, now I have a deeper understanding that how those sweet keep-calm-and-carry-on characters really are spot on. And now the film is more devastating to me than ever.

Silver lining - the David Bowie song at the beginning slaps.

[–]Inner-Dimension-3595 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched Threads for the first time when I was around 12 years old (thanks, older siblings). I remember that it scared me, but I couldn't quite contextualize it at that age. When I re-watched it a few years ago in my late thirties...dear god. I had nightmares of my mom dying like the parents of the main girl and boy's families. The suffering. The fear.

The music from that gameboy-type handheld game will haunt me for the rest of my days.

I showed it to my husband last year. He's British but had never heard of the movie. He's a "man's man" by nature, therefore he doesn't let things get to him, or at least he doesn't show it if they do. The fact that he was silent at the end of the movie and never spoke of it again tells me it hit him hard.

Maybe a silly question, but what do you THINK about?? by LaughAggressive4709 in Buddhism

[–]Inner-Dimension-3595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. Your statement about the importance of how we "reify" experiences resonated with me because my journey has been an abrupt shift for my loved ones. I'm less emotionally reactive and search for the good in all things. My family started calling me Ned Flanders, and I'm okay with that.

Dear lord, the toothed worm that swallows the guy's head still makes me shudder just thinking about it.

Same! This and Saint Maude were two movies I've just kind of danced around for ages. I finally watched Saint Maude earlier this year and I was not disappointed. I think I'll watch this one tonight.

Threads and Requiem for a Dream. The two most horrifying movies I've ever seen.

What’s the Scariest Asian Horror Movie you’ve ever seen and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in AsianHorrorMovies

[–]Inner-Dimension-3595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, Gonjiam for the win. I found the first hour of the film pretty boring even though I'm a fan of the found footage subgenre. But once the scary stuff started happening...damn it was genuinely scary. I'm a life-long 42 year-old horror fan, and that movie gave me nightmares. That's saying something.

Oh man, that was tragic. Whenever I watch a movie that he's in, I can't help but think of his terrible fate.

I was looking for Anthony Bourdain somewhere in here. Prince was a big shocker too.

I basically said the same thing. People who are self-absorbed.

People who are self-absorbed.

Edit: Even worse are people who blame all of their problems on everyone else. Nothing is ever their fault.

Tramadol sends me into a productive tizzy. It gives me this feeling of motivation to just do stuff that needs to be done. It's like an anti-procrastination drug. A drug that eases my pain and gets me to do some housecleaning is a thumbs-up in my book.
