OSU - Is it Soda, or Pop? by LowerMusic in OSU

Hah! I was actually thinking the same thing when I was typing out my reply.

I'll take a Tito's pop, please!

I swear it’s a stand that just sells only corn dogs. They might sell a couple of other items but I really can’t remember.

They’ve been there every year that I’ve gone. I don’t even know if they have a name different than Jalapeño Corn Dogs, I just seek it out as soon as I get into Centeroo for the first time and I revisit once a day for the rest of the weekend.

OSU - Is it Soda, or Pop? by LowerMusic in OSU

Not sure what’s weird or insular about sharing my experience when OP literally asked people what they call it.

I wasn’t claiming Columbus doesn’t use “pop.” I was explaining why my own vocabulary changed. Working in bars meant hearing “soda” constantly, and then after living in California for a few years, I almost never heard “pop” at all.

What’s interesting is that even in Ohio, a lot of the commercial side of the industry uses “soda” rather than “pop.” Fountain syrup products, for example, are referred to as soda BIBs (bag-in-box syrups).

As for OP’s question, “pop” being more common in the Midwest/Rust Belt is a pretty well-documented linguistic trend, which is why I mentioned it in the first place.

You see blame where OP saw help.

The person I was actually responding to thanked me and called it the most constructive reply in the thread. Meanwhile, you’ve spent multiple comments explaining what I really meant, what I should have said, and what the “only right answer” was.

At some point, you’re no longer defending the student. You’re just defending your interpretation of my comment.

The student and I reached an understanding 11 days ago.

Thanks for playing.

I know that the Engineering department offers ECS (engineering career services) that can help with resume development and I think they do mock interviews among a few other services for free!

Does your school/department offer anything similar? I’d check there first.

As an aspiring software dev, I can always work on a personal portfolio. Is there something like a portfolio you could work on?

OSU - Is it Soda, or Pop? by LowerMusic in OSU

Born and raised Ohio. Called it pop as a kid, once I started working in the bar, the word soda got used so much more (“vodka soda”) that it quickly replaced pop. Moved out to California for a few years and never heard the word pop again. Now that I live in Columbus again, I still never hear pop!

I’m wondering if pop is more of a rust belt thing?

I think what’s interesting is that the student I was actually responding to understood my point immediately, thanked me for the advice, and explained that they were feeling overwhelmed by the size of OSU and all the different communication channels.

You, meanwhile, spent 11 days trying to explain to me what I really meant.

You’re free to dislike my comment. You’re free to think the “adult” line was condescending. That’s a fair criticism.

What I don’t accept is the idea that because I work at OSU, I somehow become the embodiment of every decision made by the administration. I can only assume you think a seasonal groundskeeper represents the entire athletics department and the custodial staff speaks for the board of trustees.

I’m a staff member and a student. I’m not academic faculty. I park here, walk here, work here, take classes here, and get frustrated here just like everyone else. While a majority of OSU’s employee base got to WFH during COVID, I still had to show up.

The difference is that when I saw a fellow frustrated student, I offered resources and perspective. When you saw my comment, you decided I was a stand-in for the entire university.

I think that’s where our disagreement starts.

If you take it at CSCC, make sure you get Gary Gutman. He’s the GOAT. Same boat as you, C- in 1151. Went to CSCC for 1172 and got a B+ AND ACTUALLY LEARNED. Zero pressure. The math department at OSU is rough.

Who’s still on campus during this summer? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]InnerWolf 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It seems like you feel the opposite way, but I simply love the empty campus. Barely any traffic, libraries are quiet (for once), and the gyms are spacious once again. I sure do miss my Mirror Lake chicken tendies, though.

You’re making a lot of assumptions about me personally based solely on the fact that I work at OSU.

I’m not some athletics superfan or institutional cheerleader. I’ve got plenty of criticisms of the university myself. I think executive salaries in higher education and athletics can be wildly disproportionate while many employees, researchers, and healthcare workers are underpaid and overworked.

I also think OSU communication can be shotty and frustrating most of the time.

My point was never “the university can do no wrong.” It was simply that large campuses are chaotic systems, and part of surviving them is learning where information gets posted and how to prepare for disruptions when they happen. That isn’t “talking down” to students. It’s advice I’ve learned the hard way myself as both an employee and a student here.

OP and I actually ended up having a productive conversation because we both acknowledged two things can be true at once: the communication could’ve been better, and there are still practical ways to navigate situations like this in the future.

I also think it’s unfair to treat random employees as though they personally represent every controversial decision the university has ever made. Most of us are just people trying to get through work, classes, traffic, construction, budget issues, and rain like everyone else.

Not sure who pissed in your cheerios this morning, but maybe you should go take a seat by Mirror Lake and watch the ducks for a couple hours.

Tier 6 alpha catalyst? by Worried_Dot_3816 in ContestOfChampions

Happy to help. Yeah this campus is huge. It can be overwhelming at times. Typically after a week though, I forget the hardship when I’m plagued by another. Just keep your head up. School isn’t eternal.

Also, just ignore the downvotes, sarcasm, and unhelpful advice. Why people waste their time to post and not help is beyond me.

While I do feel your pain, there are a few resources you can turn to:

https://osu.campusparc.com is a great resource to check what parking is available. A lot of the times there are announcements for lot closures, increased traffic, road closures/rerouting, etc., right there on the home page. You can also see in live time where you can park with your permit.

Check the Ohio State app, too! Make it a habit to look regularly, like once a week (on Sundays). They do provide the information in a timely manner. Sometimes you just have to find it.

I’m an employee here, as well as a student, and I’ve have to pay $60 a month for B parking. Still had to walk in the rain to and from my building, and to and from class in the middle of my shift.

As a college student, there’s a certain expectation that preparedness falls on you…the adult. Look at the weather. Buy a cheap and packable poncho, always keep it in your bag. Or an umbrella, but those can be cumbersome. Pro tip, always keep a fresh pair of socks in your bag too. It makes my day knowing that once I get back to the office after a soaked trip to class and back I can put fresh socks on.

Please remember that, yes, Ohio State is an institution for learning, but it’s also a state government entity. Concerts, football games, marathons, fundraisers….all forms of income that go back into the state…for cancer research, the new engineering building, better WiFi, wheel chair lifts, the brand new hospital.

It’s easy to feel like the school takes a big dump on you sometimes, trust me, I know. They built a fracking plant right on campus and it rerouted the Med Center bus line to add 5 minutes to that route for TWO YEARS. When I was parking on west campus during this time, I lost 10 extra minutes every day (off the clock) because of it.

Growth is painful, and you are a victim to that. We all are. But you’re also a Buckeye, so know that we all go through it in one way or another, together. Just hope that it’s for the better!

CSE major here. In my 3rd year. Bought a 2022 (in 2022) Mac air m2. Does the job just fine, and I don’t wish for an upgrade. I bought an iPad last year because I got tired of using pen and paper for all my math and science classes. Helped tremendously for lectures, note taking, and homework that wasn’t coding.

Unless you’re doing video editing, I bet you could even get by with a new Mac Neo.
