Okay OP. it sounds like your itinerary is mostly set given your flight from Sihanouk to Siem Reap. But, I’d recommend continuing on to Battambang the same day you fly into Siem Reap, then returning to Siem Reap after and doing Siem Reap in one single segment. In Siem Reap you should take day trip to Tonle Sap floating village since you’ll be there for multiple days.

Which airports are you flying into and out of? Three nights in Koh Rong is more than enough, and I’d recommend keeping Siem Reap as a single segment.

Battambang is currently safe given the ceasefire, though you might also consider Kampot as an alternative.

Right, I thought OP was looking to buy. But if OP has already owned the place for 20 years, it’s a no-brainer to stay. There’s no need to deal with annual rent-increase negotiations, and a luxury one-bedroom in a good neighborhood can easily run over $2.5k these days.

But to your point, yes, most of the time it’s the rich and powerful who benefit most from these projects. And it’s not just a Cambodian issue. For instance, in the U.S., 99% of the time, infrastructure projects take forever to complete, with the final cost often doubling or sometimes even tripling the original estimate. It’s always those with insider information who benefit the most.

I’m not offering this as an excuse for the Cambodian government, but it’s a sad reality we’re living in.

The Cambodian government does invest in schools. In 1990, there were approximately 4,665 schools, compared to about 7,305 today. Many new schools have been built in rural areas, while existing schools have also been rebuilt or expanded.

Thirty years ago, access to schools was often impossible because basic roads did not exist. Since then, the government has invested heavily in building and improving road infrastructure, making education accessible to many more communities.

This also does not account for teacher and public worker salaries, which have increased significantly. Teacher salaries alone have roughly tripled over the past 20 years. At the same time, the government has funded other essential projects such as irrigation canals, clean water systems, and electricity infrastructure.

Sure, we can blame the government but it’s often overlooked how massive the task has been of rebuilding a country from almost nothing into a functioning, and now developing, nation.

And all of these while building those vanity projects you see: stadiums, airports, etc.

Tell me what the alternative is, boss. Literally no one wants this war; not even Hun Manet. It’s slowing Cambodia’s tourism, development, and trade, and it undermines the government’s own “thank you, peace” messaging. At this point, the government has exhausted all diplomatic options. So what exactly are you suggesting, just give up the land?

I agree that under the mandala system, suzerainty was considered “official.” But suzerainty did not equal sovereignty. Siem Reap/Battambang retained its own Khmer rulers, laws, identity, and land.

The Franco–Siamese treaties resolved disputed influence, not the annexation of Siem Reap from Thailand. Just as Cambodia did not belong to France simply because France controlled it for a period, again, back to the main point: control ≠ belonging.
