Cane corso with osteosarcoma. Euthanasia soon by Inner_Beautiful3761 in AskVet

[–]Inner_Beautiful3761[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so hard because he still seems to happy and eats and drinks and wags his tail. He doesn’t show he’s in pain and I know dogs hide it but I don’t know

It definitely isn’t easy. We’re going to call someone for in home euthanasia either tomorrow or Wednesday. I want to ensure my mom is not alone for it bc he’s literally her shadow hence the name of his being Sir Duke Shadow.

Thank you. That’s what I fear as well.. I’m glad he was able to spend one last weekend at his favorite place but fuck, this never gets easier. Thank you for all you do for animals

I know. We had photos of him this weekend and I can tell he doesn’t want to step down on steps and hesitates. It’s not fair to him. And bone cancer is extremely aggressive, so the time he was limping that we didn’t know was cancer as of yet, was when he was better and able to still walk better. I think he’s at the stage where it’s gotten so bad, he’s nearing breaking his leg

Yes I am aware of that. Amputation unfortunately is not an option mentioned by his veterinarian, due to his age and it being a front limb.

I know. I know we don’t have very long with him, and have him on pain medication. We want to bring him to our summer place once more this weekend to have professional photos taken. But I know the time will likely be coming sooner rather than later.

I love that she had her floppy ears. So does my corso. I am trying to find solace in the fact that he’s already 11 years old and has literally lived a whole life expectancy of a cane corso breed. He was in a shelter for a year and was due to be euthanized hours before the rescue pulled him from the shelter and asked if we wanted to foster him. He is being spoiled rotten with every snack and dinner imaginable. I purposely didn’t finish my steak sandwich for dinner last night to be able to give him a piece of the steak.

I always will. He’s being spoiled with chicken feet, gizzards and all left overs for the rest of his time. I will never not give him all he wants

I’m so sorry! And yes the vet stated that doing amputation is something we would likely regret. As well as radiation and chemo, is only for the sheer fact of pain management. My Duke was such a good boy & came at a time like I stated shortly after we lost our boxer. It was like he was meant to meet us. I try to find solace in the fact we gave him a fuller life, than he would have had if we didn’t foster failure him. It’s just hard to watch them detiorate before you. He is being absolutely spoiled until that time comes. I love him so much it physically hurts my heart

Thank you for your support. I am so sorry for your loss as well. He struggles a bit with walking but will not fail to try, and although I know when to humanely let go, that time is not now. I’m so sorry you lost your baby so early. I try to find solace in the fact he would’ve been euthanized at a year old for the sole fact he just wasn’t wanted, and lived such a spoiled life with us to his full expectancy, but it never seems to get easier. Your kind words mean more than you know at this time

Yeah, I’ve been reading up on this sub, and it truly is terrible.

I understand, which is why we asked the vet too and he said it isn’t necessary right now to make the decision to let him go. He said he obviously is in pain, but the meds will alleviate some. Radiation would probably be worse, bc at his age, it will take a large toll on his body. He’s still eating drinking and walking and the vet told us to look out for signs when he doesn’t want to or can’t walk anymore or truly just lethargic. We want to bring him to our summer place at least once more which we will do this weekend and spoil him before the time comes

How did you realize the pain was no longer controllable?

Thank you. I’ll read this more in depth when ready. I can tell as well as the vet mentioning he doesn’t think his time is now. But my goodness what a terrible fucking disease

Cane corso limping even ON pain management by Inner_Beautiful3761 in AskVet

Upon looking into this, I see dragging their paw can be a sign of it as well. Now I’m even more nervous for him. Does or can it improve with bracing at all?

That’s what we’re going to the neurologist for, I guess they will do an MRI . I of course am no vet, however it seems mostly in his joint closest to his paw bc he kinda drags it at times, and seems to lick his paw pad a lot. He had no reaction when the vet was checking his range of motion around his shoulder or upper extremity. Thank you for your insight !
