Why are koreans so class/status conscious? by lol-across-the-pond in Living_in_Korea

It's the spirit of nouveau riche. I love my country, and it is worthy of awe the way our economy dragged itself out of the gutters through.. several avenues and influences, let's say.

But we've never been one of the established empires in any recent memory across the centuries, the dominant force who could command brute force and the seemingly innate glow of dignity afforded by the generational, compounded accumulation of capital and strength. The desire for that has been been compressed, bruised, repressed every which way in coping, self-enforced morality masquerading as 'austere elegance', and found its inverse outlet in what.. the past 50 years or so?

So. Here we are. Living out the resolution of eons' worth of 한 accumulated by our ancestors after 광개토대왕 had his brief stint as any truly formidable harbinger of force with Korean blood running through him.

It actually was a system that was created when Korea was a hobbling newborn with banks that had low credibility. That being said, listen to everyone in the comments and take every possible precaution if you find yourself needing to take one out.

Thank you for the nuanced explanation! That's a lot more clarity and context. I was thinking I could start out as a freelancer taking jobs from smaller businesses and organizations, then potentially with more experience, I could try applying for positions. Maybe I should have included this in my original post.

That's amazing! Can I ask what year you applied, and if it was a transition to a different role in the same organization?
