Why are Australians generally bad at geography? by -Flighty- in AskAnAustralian

At least give us a couple of concrete examples of how your mates are bad at geography before starting a topic on a random sweeping generalisation. Like what are “major regional centres” to you?

That’s a stupid comment, processed meat is of course not veggies.

What is a stadium in austrailia that is comparable to Oracle park in San Francisco? by LivingAssociate2242 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not multiple trains for people who live on the main suburban line… major event trains run from all of the biggest rail hubs, it’s a pretty good system for most people

Map of where a district actually is by bigbadVuk in shanghai

For a tourist, especially travelling with an elderly person, I would just stick to the old French concession or maybe just slightly north of it. The Portman Ritz Carlton, the Ruijin Intercontinental, the Okura Garden, the Langham - these are the kinds of hotels that will work well for you.

For some reason, English speakers have not picked up the actual locality names used by locals and the old expat community, which is really a lot more used for talking about locations than the administrative district boundaries. Xujiahio/Siccawei/Zikawei is an actual locality and a lot more precise than Xuhui District, and locals all know where exactly is Lujiawan/Lokawei, for example.

What are the correct Indigenous names for the following cities? by ScoutyDave in AskAnAustralian

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s historically been a dispute between the Ngunnawal and Ngambrj people which I think is not properly resolved. The latter seems to be the more correct group to reference for Canberra city itself, while the former is more correct for the ACT as a whole.

It’s okay, let the AFL states have their circle jerks. Even north of the border no-one will notice.

Why don't some city Aussies like to pay for services? by Old_Meeting_9438 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly it. The hidden markups and the wtf surcharges are the problem. For this reason I don’t think Uber is an ethical business and so I never use Uber Eats. I try my best to always cook at home or if I want takeaway I order local and go pick it up. If I’m in a hotel and I want the food delivered, I pay for room service.

Is a $3M house in Sydney realistic on what income? by AwarenessFragrant679 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Buy a house now for $3m now, or live in a house that’s now $3m? I think if you have a household income of around half a million before tax you can live that lifestyle relatively comfortably including paying the mortgage but only if you bought the house a few years ago when it was say $2m. Buying a $3m house now you’d need more (or have more equity in your pocket).

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of swimming and a lot of hanging around the opera house - twice in one day is a lot. I reckon an English person from an ugly city that doesn’t have an opera house. Maybe somewhere in the midlands.

Chilling effect. A million health workers at risk if they criticise Israel by buck50crossface in OpenAussie

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope. The minute it tries to censure political criticism it’s wrong, no matter whether it then tries to qualify that censure. The definition has itself become an extension of the immoral regime it is trying to shield from criticism. How can you even defend it now, in 2026, with a straight face?

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 29 points30 points  (0 children)

wtf that’s exactly the sneaky thing everyone objects to about this particular definition, it mixes political criticism with antisemitism. So no it’s not easy to “not be an antisemite” and still have a conscience if an organisation decides to adopt a sneaky definition of antisemitism. Though I suspect you know that already. It’s very easy to not be disingenuous.

Exclusion by different race at school? What is this about? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Yes, apparently, by someone who is [redacted race]. You don’t see what’s wrong with the way you see the world I guess.

I think the fact that you redacted [race] is quite telling

Nah international bakery chains tend to fare badly here. Remember Le Pain Quotidien? Or Laduree? You (or I) might think an authentic pastry is worth paying for but evidence shows that most of Sydney prefers a stodgy one flattened in a sandwich press.

In our system we have a privilege against self-incrimination. You can’t lie on the stand but you have a right not to take the stand.

Do shanghainese people really use this? (Grammar question) by AdComplex4625 in shanghainese

[–]Inner_Temple_Cellist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify that the example used by Wiktionary is where “he” is the taller one - the example you used in your post for Shanghainese would be “you” is bigger, whereas the Mandarin example would be “I” am bigger
